This clinic is rated by Consumer Checkbook as being #1 in the Southeast Metro area and #9 in the entire Metro area for quality and value--I can see why! My cat has been poked and prodded by several of the friendly, purrrfessional vets and vet techs at this clinic, and he and I like them all (as does my sister, whose cats also reluctantly visit this clinic). They are empathetic, gentle, and wonderful at easing your worry while explaining procedures. Not to mention they are experts at obliterating cats' stank breath! We have sent numerous other friends and family here...which is a 20-30 minute drive away from home town. While there are other veterinary clinics in Red Wing *shout out to The Bluffs for also having taken wonderful care of our family pets over the years*, paws-down we will visit the Hastings clinic first due to large cost savings ...about 2/3 to 1/2 of what you pay for office visits/teeth cleaning/extractions, etc.. elsewhere. I brought my dog in to have him neutered and it was a horrifying experience. He was dropped off at 8:30 am and they called at 1:30 pm stating that everything went well and that I could pick him up after 3 pm. My partner went in at 330 to get him and they carried him out and my partner said that his sack was the size of a soft ball. My partner asked them if that was normal, and they said it might be. The vet said they would keep him a little longer to see if it went down, well it didnt. They ended up having to go back in 2 additional times because he had internal bleeding. They were not able to locate it , so they ended opening his penis by cutting it from the tip to his sack and opened his stomach to check for bleeding. They never found where all the bleeding was coming from and they were not sure why he was swelling like that but said they gave him an extra stich to see if that helped. They called me multiple times throughout the day stating he should be fine but we are going to go back in. In all he went under 3 different times and nothing was found but he had stiches from his sack to his breast bone and along side his whole penis. They called me at 830 pm saying I had 3 choices, 1. pick him up and monitor him myself, 2. leave him there alone in a cage for the night, or 3. Rush him to the ER vet. I opted to take him home because I didnt want him to be alone overnight. The Vet who did the surgeries told me he didnt know what went wrong but asked me to call him if I take him somewhere else so I could tell him what they say the issue is. I feel like he didnt know what he was even doing. He came across very nervous and remorseful, he knew he made a mistake but didnt admit it. We didnt think he would make it through the night. He had to be carried home because he was so out of it and in pain he could not even lift his head. He still had blood sweeping through the stiches. Some weeks went by and he is still alive, but I will no longer use this vet because they butchered my dog and almost killed him. Also side note he had a Scrotal Hematoma and it happens when you mess up the neuter and they didnt need to cut open his penis or go into his stomach for that. This used to be my go to vet but their doctors have changed and not for the better. I also had my other dog put down here 2 years ago he was 14 and had cancer and they lost his ashes, so never going here again. read more

The push for RNA vaccines in dogs is immoral. Arlo got severe allergies from the rabies vaccine and they keep pushing for more vaccines. This clinic seems to care more about money than they do our pets. I miss Dr. Barr - he truly loved my dogs. The RNA vaccines are killing our pets and causing cancers. Big pharma now owns many veterinary clinics. Be careful where you take your pets. Also, in the state of MN rabies vaccines are not mandatory every 3 years. Rabies is very rare yet they push this vaccine. Our pets are over vaccinated and it is killing them, making them sick and causing lifelong issues until they die. We had a Border Collie Shapard mix that lived a long and beautiful life... he was not over vaccinated. Research the new vaccines that are out now, they are not safe. May, 2025. I brought my dog in for a surgery to remove a tag growing in her mouth. On the check in paperwork it was written she was due for a rabies vaccine & please check which vaccine's you would like done. I didn't check to give ANY vaccine. Previously I had asked at her yearly appointment if any vaccine was state law? I was told no & declined the vaccine, because of research showing vaccine side effects. During the surgery my dog was given a rabies vaccine without my permission. When I asked the vet manager why did they vaccinate without my permission? I was told it is state law & this veterinary clinic's policy. I asked what's in the vaccine, company and what are the side effects? She said she didn't know the side effects & what's in it. Vanguard was the company. I checked the state law at the law library & policy on the website. There is no state law mandating a rabies vaccine, there is no policy depicting a rabies vaccination for surgeries. They lied. In fact there a state law that does require the clinic to disclose a vaccination to the owner to give consent prior to vaccination. I asked for the vaccine money to be returned. They sent back a check & my records, stating We have enclosed a copy of your records for your future veterinary services elsewhere. I had been going there around 30 years. On & off. read more

I am writing this after taking time to reflect so I could be clear and fair. Over the course of 3 months my dog was seen multiple times at this clinic for progressive itching, skin changes, and increasing distress. I was continually told that he had allergies and was given medication; however, despite ongoing treatment his condition continued to worsen rather than improve. Ultimately, his decline led me to seek care at an emergency vet due to uncontrollable trembling and vomiting. There, he was quickly diagnosed with an underlying parasitic infection - not allergies. Once appropriate treatment was started his improvement was noticeable within a short period of time. I understand that veterinary medicine can be complex, but when symptoms progress and treatments are not working, reassessment is critical. This unfortunate experience reinforced how important it is for per owners to stay engaged, ask questions, and advocate for their pets when something doesn't feel right. read more

We are thankful to have found Hastings Veterinary Clinic. They have loved our pets, cared for them through all stages of life, and we are very pleased with their level of expertise and professionalism. COVID protocols changed how they conducted day-to-day operations, but nothing wavered in the care they offered. We actually prefer the new procedures because our animals are more comfortable waiting in our vehicle than in the waiting room with other animals/humans. Shine on, HVC! read more

I have been coming to this place for almost 12 years and boy, is this place is going downhill QUICK! I scheduled a 9:30 appt. and by 9:50, I asked to confirm my appt. time. The front desk told me they weren't on the right screen, but that sounded right I told her that I needed to get back to work and was eventually offered to have ONLY a technician take a sample and call me back with the results. The problem is that I scheduled other services and wanted my pet seen by a doctor. I agreed for them to start working on him, but nothing happened. After another 10 minutes, I WAS DONE! I informed the front desk that I was leaving and wanted to reschedule. She was apologetic, but didn't offer to look at the calendar until I called her out on it ‍ At that point, I told her that I will just go somewhere else. Clearly, YOUR MONEY and PET NO LONGER MATTERS HERE! In case you were wondering, there was only one other person there when I arrived and another that came afterwards. Also, I understand things come up and I am willing to wait a reasonable time, but properly inform your clients - WE HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES TOO! read more

They are so gentle with our shy dog that she just goes with the flow. They come out to your car to get your pet, which makes a lot of sense even outside of covid times. The vets also came out for our sheep when we had them and were excellent with large animals. They are conservative with tests and treatments, only using them as needed. We have been to places that tested constantly then came the bill. They work with you on prioritizing and spacing shots and treatments so things are affordable and your pet stays healthy. read more

So disappointed. This clinic lied to me twice: first, by telling me that a rabies titer test was $167, then increasing their price to $322 while my dog was inside the clinic; then, the vet actually told me I would have to repeat the titer test "every season." However, that assertion was completely made up by the vet. Why would a doctor cite a veterinary law that he doesn't actually know? I'm just trying to do the best thing for my elderly dog, but it's very hard when veterinary doctors and clinic staff are not truthful. read more

I started going to Hastings Veterinarian Clinic years ago, mainly because they had emergency care, as a breeder it is important to me that my vet is available when needed. Took a stray cat to be spayed. They did a good job. Had a cert for $100 off from animal ark. Thats why I chose this clinic.

Since Dr Barr left all they new Docs want money money money. You can't take your pet there for under a hundred bucks. They don't take payments anymore. Bill has to be paid when you leave. A 400.00 dollar blood test for our dog, which they didn't even blink a eye at the price, then want you to pay it up front. There just nuts, no I don't have money growing out of my butt or a golden spoon up there either. They used to be a excellent home time Vet. Now all about the MONEY!!!!! read more

I've been taking my pet to Dr. Bahr at Hastings Veterinary Clinic for years. I'm sad that Dr. Bahr retired, but I will continue going to this clinic. The only reason I didn't give this a five-star review is because while Drs. Brown and Filkins are great, I had two bad experiences with Dr. Cologgi. I will not see him, but I would bring my pet to any of the other vets. The facility is clean, staff is friendly and seem to really care about what they do, and prices are comparable to anywhere else. read more
