Not bad but I don't know about the bun quality. Felt like it wasn't as soft and squishy as it should be or maybe because these are kept in a cool fridge for the filling making the bun this way. The prices were as bad as I thought. I got two very basic flavours as this was my first time. I got the custard and Whipped cream filling. These were their cheapest ones at $3.89. Other flavours are $4.29 which is still not bad but when you compare it to a bun at any Chinese bakery; for the size it is expensive. They offer other deserts, seasonal special flavours and no tax when you buy 6. Not a huge fan myself cause of the bun but not bad.

New Hattendoe on woodbine, Japanese bakery featuring shokupan and cream buns . The cream buns are very soft with fresh cream filling inside, really tasty. The quality is very good but price is not cheap, average $4+ per bun, plus tax, and I can easily finish 2 or 3 after dinner

I was dining in Markham and originally planned to drop by Duo for some bakery takeout. However, they were closed already so I found out this place offering Japanese buns through yelping. It turned out to be a gem. When I dropped by near the end of the night, there were only a couple of items left so I didn't have much choice other than bought all of them to try. I got the red bean bread, the custard bread and the egg salad burger. All were so tasty. The sweetness level was perfect for me. My favorite was the egg salad burger, with such smooth and delicate taste. I was always a big fun of egg salad sandwich and this was the best egg salad bun I've ever had. I strongly recommend this place to whoever can't take super sweet desserts and loves the light-flavoured Japanese buns. I will definitely revisit to try more items.

A bit of sweets for lunch. Japanese Egg Salad Sando, match pan, azuki pan, and matcha ice blended drink

So I'd like to leave my review and some may agree and others may not. I actually enjoyed my experience with Hattendo's flavors. I think typical thoughts are for a sweet flavor from a dessert and although the two Cream Pans that I picked they tasted fresh and definitely flavorful. The matcha bun had a sweet bun, with filling that was a bit loose, but you could taste the matcha. This was similar to my experience with the Azuki bun too. The flavors are there, and may be lite for some, and a bit liquidity but I enjoyed their flavors. Now to the real reason I went to Hattendo, was for a Japanese Egg Salad Sando. It did not disappoint. From the soft boiled egg, the egg filling and the sweet bread. This made my day, as I was craving a good Japanese Egg Salad Sando. Don't forget to get yourself a drink... I chose a matcha iced blend to wash it all down. Enjoy.

The Japanese really know how to come up with amazing sweets. I've been a big fan of Japanese desserts for years. First, it was Japanese crepe cake from Mille Creperie in Kensington Market and then Tofu Cheescake from Bakery Nakamura in J- Town. Well now, I'm adding Cream Buns from Hattendo to my top 3 favourite Japanese desserts. These cream buns may look like nothing special but once you pop one of these in your mouth, you'll be craving for more! Simply delicious! We got most of the flavours to try and my favourite ones were the custard and yuzu cream buns. These buns have to be kept cold so I suggest that you bring a cooler bag with ice pack if you'll be out for awhile. They're also well known for their puddings and fruit or egg sandwiches so we'll be back to try these.

The Japanese cream bun chain has arrived in Markham! It's located in the plaza right at Woodbine/Denison. Cream bun ($3.70 each) - Extremely pillowy, soft buns filled with light whipped cream - It's good!! But NOT worth the price at all.... $4 is pretty steep for a small bun Fruit sandwich ($7.50) - it's aiiight. - if you can believe it, this is even more not worth than the bun because it's just aight They currently have a grand opening special of Buy 5 Get 1 free!

Came in to find the July Izumi Sake Brewery & Hattendo collab. The customer service was absolutely amazing. She welcomed me into the shop and spoke to the collab. It wasn't my first time but this was quite memorable. I asked for her advice and she said that she didn't drink but she still appreciated the aroma of sake in the product. We laughed about whether it would be high in alcohol content (less than 1%). I proceeded to get one of each of the milk puddings and the cream buns. When I got home - the products met expectations. The cream bun was as good as always with a subtle but wonderful aroma of sake. The pudding was also wonderfully balanced. Will miss this line once it disappears. Get it while you can!

Tried the melon azuki bean and the matcha cream bun. I thought the matcha was a little sweet. Preferred the azuki bean . Overall not a bad experience but it wasn't shockingly good. Oh , u definitely have to eat it while it's cold.

It was a quick in and out experience but worth writing about nontheless! I have seen this brand on social so when I stumbled across it while I was in the area, I had to stop in. I also got an iced matcha latte - perfect for a hot day on the road! I'll admit that in the past, I haven't been able to get behind the matcha flavour. This time I didn't bother subbing the dairy for a df option, so the matcha flavour was a lot lighter and creamier - i guess i've been doing it wrong all along? Definitely less "earthy" and more "desserty" - should I coin this phrase?? I grabbed 3 buns: custard, chocolate and matcha. I was on a matcha kick I guess! I actually really liked it! I'm a texture gal so was unsure how I would react to the inside but I didn't mind it. I was surprised the bun tasted more bready than sweet like a pastry. Overall I think I'd go back if I came across it!

This japanese cream bun place has a variety of flavors and it was good. It tasted like chocolate ice cream. They had an area to get your fortune which was fun. The staff didn't get my order right. I ordered 6 plus 2 more and was given 6. The packaging of the box had fireworks and it was nice. It was a great gift to give. This place is $$ for pricing.

The best cream buns I've tried so far in Markham/Toronto! Already been here a handful of times since they've opened and their buns never fail to impress me. The cream buns are super fluffy and light while the cream inside is the perfect "melty" texture without being too heavy. I really like how the filling isn't overly sweet as I'm normally not the biggest fan of whipped cream. So far I've tried the custard, chocolate, matcha, and ujikintoki (matcha red bean). Personally I prefer the matcha and ujikintoki, however the custard and chocolate both come to a close second as they're all delicious! The melon buns have a crunchier texture and are also topped with sliced almonds. They're more of a heavier snack as they're denser and less fluffy - I personally prefer the cream buns because of this, however I still do recommend trying the melon buns. The matcha annin tofu is very creamy while not too sweet. Nothing too special in my opinion as I found it comparable to dessert tofus from other shops. I also found it a little pricey for the amount you get - personally, I would much rather get the cream or melon buns. I was super excited to try the tamago burger as I am a huge fan of tamago, however I found it quite mediocre.. it tasted very bland and I was hoping there would be more to it, even if it was just a little bit of seasoning. However, I did leave it in the fridge and eat it a day after so that might have affected the taste. I also recommend trying out their drinks - I usually get the iced houjicha latte which tastes very authentic unlike the other places I've tried. Hattendo also has seasonal flavours if you're looking for something more unique, and I believe they offer delivery which is super convenient. Highly recommend trying this place out!

Late last year I noticed that Hattendo was setting up shop in Markham. The store is located close to South Street Burger and Starbucks, in the plaza near Woodbine and Denison. I learned through my friend (thanks RJ!) that they would be having their soft opening this weekend, so since I was grabbing my buy one, get one drinks at nearby Starbucks, I decided to stop in. It's a cute little shop. They are observing physical distancing. Only 3 people were allowed in at a time. They also do contactless payment and email your receipts. Hattendo specializes in Japanese cream buns and melon pan (cookie-crusted, cream filled buns). I love the assortment of flavour options including matcha, custard, chocolate, azuki, and seasonal flavours such as pistachio, houjicha, and taro. Current seasonal flavours include chestnut and umeboshi (Japanese plum). Hattendo also sells fruit filled sandwiches such as are popular in Japan, with fillings like grapes, kiwi, or mandarin orange segments with freshly whipped cream and Hattendo's custard cream. Other dessert options include little pudding jars such as almond tofu, caramel pudding, and matcha tofu. Hattendo's menu also includes some limited savoury options, like egg "sando" which from their menu is packed with egg salad and half egg pieces between two slices of white bread. You can also find an assortment of tea, coffee, and fruit based drinks such as genmaicha, sencha, houjicha latte, black sesame houjicha latte, matcha latte, and yuzu or passion fruit teas. The drinks are available in hot or cold options. They also have a house made ramune, a Japanese lemonade that is usually only found in bottles at Asian supermarkets. I ordered matcha and azuki cream and melon buns, and mandarin orange cream sandwiches. I also picked up the umeboshi seasonal cream bun for my sister in law. Unfortunately they were sold out of the matcha tofu pudding at the time of my visit. We ate the mandarin fruit cream sandwich first. You can tell the bread in the fruit sandwich is fresh and I liked that it was refreshing and not overly creamy. Hubby and I really both enjoyed the azuki cream bun, which had a soft exterior and quite a bit of azuki flavoured cream in it. The matcha melon pan, which had a crunchier exterior and was filled with matcha flavoured cream, was probably my favourite of the buns we purchased. I appreciated that none of the products we tasted was too sweet. I'm so excited that Hattendo is now conveniently located closer to where I live. I look forward to returning to try some of the other seasonal flavours of their cream buns, as well as their drinks!

I've tried Hattendo before, but this was the first time I've been to the store. Nice atmosphere and a good variety of different buns. The seasonal ones and melon ones are a bit more expensive and you cannot get it with the 5 pack special. I asked what is different for the melon one and they said it has a crunchy topping. I got the melon matcha one, the matcha cream was so fresh and smooth. I also got the seasonal pistachio cream which was good but I like the matcha better. They had some nice sandwiches and puddings as well. Would like to try other kinds another time!

Recently, I got to try two of their 6 inch cakes. The earl grey tea chestnut cake with fresh strawberries and the black sesame mochi lava cake with fresh mangoes. Both cakes are AMAZING! I could taste the earl grey flavor and the chestnut flavor separately along with the fresh strawberries, it is a wonderful combination. The black sesame one was sooooo good also. It has black sesame mousse on the outside and the top is like a black sesame lava topped with pistachios and some kind of nutty crumble crunch. The inside has mochis layered within along with black sesame cake, more of that nutty crumble crunch and at the bottom is fresh mangoes. I honestly don't know which one I like better but I am craving either cakes again (I had both within the last 3 weeks haha). The service there is still excellent. The curry bun could use more filling, but the pastry itself was flaky and flavorful. The cheese chicken bun was huge and super satisfying. We got it fresh so the outside was crisp and the cheese stayed gooey. We also grabbed their famous egg tarts. They kept selling out and the kitchen was scrambling to keep up, so we pre-ordered and came back thirty minutes later to pickup. Totally worth it. The crust is flaky and buttery and the filling is silky and creamy. In our opinion, these are the best egg tarts in the city.
