I say this with the utmost respect....this place gives dive vibes, but the food is banging. It's located in a super small strip mall and when we walked in it was smaller than we expected. Not a big deal, it just seemed like it would be bigger from outside. I remember fanning away a fly or two while eating. There were maybe 3-4 tables but they also have seating outside. Folks were coming in to pick up orders and the there was one server manning the tables inside and out. Now for the food. I cannot remember what the dishes are called on the menu, but everything was bomb.com. Simple but fantastic. Rice, beans, plantains, chicken smothered in onions is the makeup of one dish. Rice, beans, plantains, shredded beef for the other. Amazing. The combination of everything just works. We also ordered empanadas and those were good as well. Pretty good portions so we took home leftovers. We also ordered some fried rice and it was also very good. My wife and enjoyed everything and plan to either dine in again or order takeout. Amazing. Stopped here with some coworkers after work and I can't say enough good praises. We went before the dinner rush and the service was immediate. The chips and salsa are SO good. I had looked at the menu previously, so I knew what I was going to get but honestly it was a tough choice because everything looked so good. Clearly authentic, wonderful flavors, chips made from scratch, kind and fast service. My buddy got the wet burrito and it was massive (he demolished the entire thing)! I'm a big fan of Mexican food. Don't get me wrong, for what it is is basically the same six ingredients served to you in different vessels, and I'm totally down for that. I mean, isn't all food done the same way? Though I usually only get the same three things or so, it wouldn't stop me from frequenting Mexican restaurants 9 days out of the week. Now that we have my base line love for Mexican food established, let's delve into it. This restaurant had the typical Mexican flare. There was no mistake where you were. Being more Latin roots, it focused a lot of things around plantains, which I'm not a huge fan of. They just aren't my bag. We decided to give the potato and beef empanadas a shot as an appetizer. The same with sour cream and salsa, and you got three of them. Those were out of the park. Crunchy outside, perfect meat to potato ratio on the inside, and scooping up the sour cream and salsa with each bite *died and gone to heaven emoji*. They were well sized, too. 10/10. What I did like was the also served up their one made mild (green) and hot (red) sauces for your food. The green was perfect for the empanadas. A little tang, a little warmth, actual flavor. Loved it. The red let you know it was there. Good spice, enough spice to warrant monitoring how much you use. 10/10. My main however, seemed to fall a bit flat. I got the three ground beef american tacos with rice and beans. I made it through two and a half of them. They just didn't seem to have that oomph. The beef was not well seasoned and seemed more clumpy than usual. I did bite into a hard thing, but wasn't sure if it was a beef bone or cilantro bone. It wasn't a tooth, I checked. The sauces helped, but you shouldn't rely on your sauce to make a good taco. 6.5/10. One other thing that bothered me was the soda. It tasted like they jus poured from a two-liter. And after every refill, they never filled my ice back up. So after three drinks, there were four tiny floating ice cubes, then warm soda. 2/20. read more

I've been meaning to check out Havana Grill for some time now and finally got to with a friend before Tulip Time. It was a Saturday at 2pm and there was a line out the door almost the entire time we were there! Food was great - it was my first time trying tostones mixtos, which are sort of like tostones cups filled with 3 different proteins at this restaurant. The shrimp ones come with quite a bit of sauce, so I opted to try them first before they got soggy. The ropa vieja (named since the slowly cooked shredded beef resembles "old clothes") was really tasty! The piña colada wasn't my favorite, though. It took some time to get our main dish (the table next to us was halfway through theirs when we came in before them), so they may have forgotten about it since it was so busy...but the bandeja paisa had a ton of food (especially protein). Both of us took home leftovers. I think this is a great option for Cuban & Colombian food! Just be prepared to wait a bit when it's busy. read more

Over the years we've come to this establishment and every time we have wonderful food and great service. I've left a review in the past but with the new year upon us, I felt moved to leave another. We love their food and urge everyone to come and eat here! They always have delicious chips and salsa when you enter. The music is lively and fun. The restaurant itself is clean and inviting. We travel many miles just to get our Cuban food fix. I almost always order the ropa vieja and my husband almost always orders their vaca frita. Both staples for us. We had an event in downtown Holland on a Saturday night and were looking to enjoy a delicious and relaxing early dinner away from the downtown area. Based on the reviews of other Yelpers, we chose Havana Grill - and loved it. Our timing was great based on other diners' reviews because we were early enough so that there was no wait. The menu is very expansive and since it was our first visit, we explored it all. We ended up starting with a very generous order of Maduros con Crema (sweet fried plantains with a side of crema), which was delicious! The flavor and texture were perfect. For our entrees, we chose Vaca Frita (marinated shredded beef in lime, garlic, and onions, then seared until crispy, served with white rice, black beans, and platanos maduros) and Carne Asada Tampiqueña (tender flame-grilled steak served with two cheese enchiladas covered in green sauce served with fresh guacamole, Mexican-style rice, beans, & warm tortillas). Both dishes were excellent and the portions were generous enough that we took leftovers home for lunch the following day. Helpful tip: bring a cooler for those leftovers if you're not heading home right away, and our rookie mistake, the Vaca Frita includes fried plantains, meaning that the entree + our appetizer = many fried plantains. It was an excellent mistake, however. The owner (we assume) and the very sweet young woman who was our server (assumingly a family member) could not have been kinder and more welcoming. I ordered a carryout california burrito at Havana Grill- steak, avocado, pico, crema and french fries. It was very good, a ton of steak and fries, redolent with avocado and swimming in pico de gallo. Finally Holland Michigan has produced a quality burrito. It wasnt inexpensive- 18.00 but it was worth it. Solid dinner in Holland. Many of the trendier places for booked for dinner. This was a great find that worked well for us and our 21 mo old. The place is not big...maybe 8 tables maximum. The food was awesome. We tried the steak with onions on top. The accompanying white rice and black beans were also very satisfying with a patacones. We also got a quesadilla with shredded chicken and rice and beans for the toddler which he ate well ( happy mamma here). Note : The white rice and black beans were better than the yellow rice and refried pinto beans on the kids menu. SUMMARY: A bit expensive, food is good for what it is, portions are good, restaurant owner (?) clearly is trying hard and aims to please. The location is a bit sketchy, the premises a bit grungy. But isn't that how all the best Mexican and Cuban places are? We ordered Ropa Vieja and Havana Grill Chicken Sandwich. Both dishes were good, portion sizes were good, prices were a bit high, but overall we were quite pleased. They also make their own sauces in house, and both the red and the green are delicious. The grilled chicken was a bit dry, but I suppose that's just the nature of the sandwich. And that's what sauces are for. But it was cooked well and tasty. The ropa vieja meat was tasty. The rice was served a bit undercooked for our taste, but that's probably a deliberate choice on their part. Mexican or Cuban rice is more al dente than you'd get with Chinese or Indian food. The sides -- fries and plantains -- were also tasty. The man serving us was, I assume, the owner of the place. He's clearly putting in a lot of effort to make his restaurant a success and to put out food he's proud of. Despite being very busy, he was still pleasant and not agitated or grouchy from all the rushing about. We hope he finds plenty of success. read more

I stopped in for an early lunch and was pleased to see smaller lunch portions of standard dishes available for reasonable prices. I ordered the lunch portion of steak with onions, served with plantains, black beans and rice. The meat was well cooked but a little underseasoned. The rice and beans were well done and simply prepared. The tostones, however, were really hot, crispy and freshly prepared. I'm from Florida and I grew up on Cuban food. This place is a good option. Is it like the Cuban you can get in Florida? ALMOST. The plantains are really good. The ceviche is average, but it's still good. I mean, it's ceviche! GR has better options though. I didn't care for the camarones a la diabla, but that's just preference.
