Not sure how the ratings are so good here. I asked for a dry pulled pork burrito and got a wet chorizo burrito. My friend got barbacoa tacos and said it was okay but dry. We looked for a place to eat good Mexican food since we left Arizona. We haven't found anything until now. This place was so good. We also ordered. Carne asada tacos so we could try them. We usually do flour tortillas instead of corn. They were phenomenal. These tacos remind me of Arizona. We ate most of it before taking photos. We definitely ate the tacos before we could get pictures. I cannot wait to try the margarita's when I dine in next time. The ambiance is clean and comfortable. The service was friendly from the moment I walked in the door. This is a hidden gem. I would definitely recommend eating here. Parking is free and large enough for a lot of parking. read more

First off, I was a huge fan of Sandy's and was heartbroken to see our favorite breakfast nook close. I was surprised to hear my wife tell me this morning that the new Mexican restaurant that took over the space was also serving breakfasts. I am over the moon to report the Gun Lake Cocina is NOW my favorite (and in my opinion, easily the best) breakfast nook in Wayland! The interior has been given a fresh coat of life, but remains quaint and welcoming at the same time. The wife ordered a standard breakfast and I enjoyed the breakfast burrito. Full plates arrived with portions that will definitely fill any tummy. I wish I grabbed a photo of mine for this review, but it looked so good that I attacked it immediately. The service was also outstanding. Get this, while eating I kept looking up at a photo on the wall featuring fresh vegetables and pico de gallo. I asked the server if I might get a small cup to try with the rest of my burrito as it was piquing my imagination. She said she would ask, but they did not have any yet. A few minutes later, she returned with a bowl of pico de gallo that totally kicked the rest of my breakfast to 11! I told her how impressed I was with the fresh taste said they made me a small bowl up special. Seriously! In this day and age, that kind of customer service is a rare and wonderful thing! So there! It was late and they had just closed to new patrons. Cleaning was going on and three costumers sat having a drink at their table. We just wanted a drink. Two visits, none of them breakfast, and I won't be returning. None of the salsas are very good, the food was blah, and the server tried to bill me separately for something she specifically said was included in my meal. The best part of everything was the chips, but without great salsa they're just OK. Sad to say that if this is authentic mexican fare, I'm not impressed. read more

Been here on two occasions, one breakfast and one lunch.. During the breakfast one it was completely dead, we were the only table there, but the male server kept disappearing in to the back and never checked on us and we had to wait ages just to request napkins.. During lunch they did a bit better, as there were other tables, so they were more keen to stay on the floor. Nonetheless, I'm Mexican and I can say that I'm truly disappointed in this place and whoever the cook is if they are Mexican. If you are looking for true and authentic then this is not it.. During breakfast the rice was soggy in some parts and burned in others (felt like bottom of the pan left overs) and the eggs we had just tasted and smelled odd. And just no flavor whatsoever. For dinner, I got Mexican barbacoa tacos (didn't get any limes) and my girlfriend got a barbacoa torta along with an horchata drink. It was straight up bland. No flavor/seasoning in the meat whatsoever and it was almost too hard and dry to bite and swallow.. They need to learn to season and shred their meat right so that people aren't struggling.. Their green sauce and red sauce had no flavor or heat to it whatsoever. And they just shouldn't sell Mexican corn if they aren't putting any cayenne pepper or Tajin spices on it, because without it, all it is, is fucking corn, not Mexican. Now the horchata drink is the worst horchata I have ever tried in my life. Tastes like water with Splenda mixed in it, not horchata ... Do us a favor and take a trip to Grand Rapids and have a taste of the real deal so that you know what the hell you are doing... I had true high hopes for this place and was so excited that it's so close to the lake, was hoping this would be a spot we could frequent at the same time of our trips there, however it will not be.. Sadly I didn't even get the ice cream that I was going to at the end as the whole meal completely put me off to being disappointed any further.. We are going to stick to the surrounding food areas that know what they are doing in the food flavor that they advertise.. This Mexican they are trying to pursue here is not it at all.. I know they have tried to make some changes, but sorry. You need to TRY HARDER. read more
