It's been a year since COVID-19 uprooted our sense of normal life and changed so much about our world. One thing that hasn't changed is the beauty of the lakes and mountains in the Adirondacks. We have spent the winter preparing, and are pleased to announce that we are taking reservations for the 2021 season (May 28th-Oct 31st). Please see our online calendar for updated availability as well as our new Covid-19 policy page for the latest CDC guidelines and safety protocols at the Inn. As CDC and DOH recommendations change, we will update our policies also. Our local Tourism Councils and Chambers of Commerce are predicting a busy season in our area, so we encourage you to book in advance as we are not accepting "walk in" reservations this year. We were greeted on arrival by two super friendly but well behaved dogs, Buddy and Bella. Our room was very clean and serenely decorated with it's own bathroom (nice claw foot tub). The sheets felt like a thousand thread count sheets if there is such a thing. No in room TV, but Linksys WiFi was there so I watched Netflix with earphones. Nice in room fireplace for ambiance. The breakfast was amazing beyond words. Everything was expertly homemade and served on a well set dining room table that sat 6. First, fresh fruit cocktail with raspberries, nuts, melon, grapes and pineapple. Second, sticky buns the likes of which I've never had. Third, croissant made with egg, potatoes and Canadian bacon. Fourth, challah French toast with local syrup. It was Mother's Day and all the ladies received a rose. Very nice hiking to the top of Mt Severance nearby. You'll love the view. When I told her we were celebrating our anniversary, she was more than accommodating, suggesting a room with the features we were looking for - a nice-sized and comfortable bed, and a jacuzzi tub. It was perfect for what we wanted - a full day of relaxation. The Silver Spruce Inn is a historic structure, with the original building dating to like 1790. During a sumptuous breakfast the next morning, Phyllis joined use and talked about some of the history of the place, joined by a returning guest, who seemed to be rather familiar with the place. When everyone finished breakfast, Phyllis and Eldon gave us a short tour downstairs to see the bar that was acquired when the original Waldorf Astoria was being demolished to make room for the Empire State Building. History aside, the owners were pleasant and caring, the room was clean and comfortable (we slept well), the grounds were spacious and beautiful, especially the flower garden, which attracts butterflies, and even hummingbirds. The inn seems to be in a secluded location but is really quite close to the Town of Schroon and Schroon Lake. Like some other guests, we wish we could live there all the time.

The Inn is run by a lovely couple Cheryl and John who couldn't have been more helpful. We originally reached out by email, which was respond to quickly. Then the email was followed up with phones for payment, which was extremely reasonable for this over the 4th. After speaking with them it felt like we had known them for years. It was relatively easy to find, even in the dark country roads, and her hospitality was warm and caring. The grounds are truly beautiful and her rooms were very comfortable. Laura made us a big breakfast and even satisfied our picky 12-year-old by making his eggs different than ours! This place was like finding a special gem. Positives: Contactless check-in: I booked online and received an email with my room number and door code the day before. We were able to arrive at our convenience and got into the room without any issues. Ambiance: We stayed in a 2-queen room, which was clean and modern. There were thoughtful touches throughout that made us feel welcome, like decaf coffee pods for the Keurig, a mini fridge with a freezer, a microwave with cup o' noodles and oatmeal packets, and a small entryway table. Beds: Very comfortable with plenty of bedding--sheets, a fleece blanket, and a comforter, making for a cozy winter stay. Parking: The parking right outside our room was incredibly convenient, especially with all our luggage for our brief visit as part of a much longer itinerary. We also appreciated that the lot was kept clear and well-plowed despite the snowfall. Location: Just a short distance from downtown Schroon Lake, with nearby restaurants and Lake Placid within an hour's drive. Opportunities for Improvement: Odor: There was a faint smell in the room--nothing overpowering, but noticeable. After a while, I stopped noticing it, though every time I returned, it would remind me it was there. Later, the water from the bathroom faucet was scalding, which was frustrating. Bathroom: The bathroom could use some updating to match the rest of the room. The walls and tub were a bit yellowed, there was some dirt and dust in the corners, and there wasn't any counter space for toiletries. Overall, this is a solid place to stay if you're looking for somewhere comfortable and affordable to rest during a weekend of adventures.

A couple of warnings: you are staying in a house that was built over a hundred years ago. All things considered, it's in great shape, but as of now, the exterior drastically needs a paint job. Karen is the nicest person you could imagine hosting a B&B. She was very excited to be sold out for a special event at the Star Trek tour. The place looks great inside (see my photos). We stayed in the Rose Room. The room was huge, with a very good bed. The bathroom is large as well. We loved everything about it, except for two small things. The jacuzzi tub does not have a shower. I did not notice this when reserving the room. Of course, a bath is fine. The only other complaint I have is that the wifi did not work in our room. It's a very big house, so I was not completely surprised. Our cell phones worked fine (Verizon). Wifi worked fine in the living room, which is also a very comfortable area. There is a flat-screen TV with Hulu in the living area (which happens to have the Star Trek episodes...). There are very large lawn areas outside the house, which would be perfect for events like wedding. I saved the best for last. The breakfasts are amazing. All home-made. In four days I put on three pounds! With my wife being vegan, we are used to getting no choice for breakfast, but she gave multiple vegan options every day we were there. KAren is really sweet and tries very hard to make everyone happy!
