Broadway Gardens, or Broadway Tunnel East Mini Park if you want to be formal about it, is a tiny…read moreplot of land above the eastern end of the Broadway Tunnel. Blink and you might miss it. But there's a nice story here. In 2008, this was a depressing looking patch of dirt and asphalt. Then a public-private partnership redeveloped the land into a children's garden. The kids spend time growing things, learning about nature, and feeling good about themselves, and in return, this little corner of the neighborhood has been beautified. The City later expanded the garden's mission, setting aside space for elderly residents of the Lady Shaw Senior Center, giving them some badly needed fresh air and a creative outlet. Unfortunately, to protect the flowers and vegetables, the City keeps the gate locked, but if you're walking by, you can still appreciate the nice work done by these volunteer gardeners.

While I did find one gardener walking his cat on a leash through the tiny greenhouse onsite, everyone's been full of humor and kindness. The garden's open for anyone to go visit and the plots are only $35 for a the whole year. And unlike a bunch of other community gardens that I looked into, I was able to get a space immediatley. An added bonus is it's a quick walk from Sloat garden store on Clement.

There are whole bunch of drug addicts and needle shooters that lay around in the alley. If not every day, there are broken glass and used needles. Although this garden have a lot of beautiful flowers and trees. Lots of fruit trees and plants too, but it's really disgusting because no one takes care of it. It's crowded, branches in twine with other. Leaves are brown due to no one watering it. And not every one can get in. On the gates door is a pad number lock. You have to sign up to be a member, and obtain the lock number.

There was more dirt than flowers and vegetables to be seen, but beautiful nonetheless with an interesting history to go along with the creation of the garden, a result of the dedication and determination of neighborhood residents who also maintain the planter beds. Inside the serene space, there's a shipping container showcasing a vibrant and colorful mural (City Life Oasis) by Michael Rios, as well as a massive manila village mural on the building across the street. Also within the garden, a bit of seating can be found available for community members and visitors to enjoy the carefree atmosphere and growing plants all around.

I have three boxes that I am currently using what they called victory garden project, following along those same guidelines. Right now I have corn, tomatoes, strawberries growing. But when you go you will find a variety of different types of vegetables growing all maintained by the residents. A shout out to TODCO maintenance man Van. He does a bang up job on taking care of the small things that need be worked on over there.

I have been germinating seeds for a long time and my interest in plants extends to the very life sustaining forests of California Sierras. A community garden brings people together, provides a positive resource in the community and gives people some fresh, healthy organic vegetables to eat. Many seniors in our complex get tomatoes, beans, peppers and lettuce from our efforts. We are so happy to have this garden in Vallejo and hope it continues to grow and thrive.

I went there because I saw an ad (on Nextdoor) about some garden starts they were offering for a small donation. They weren't quite ready to leave the greenhouse, but I was thrilled to see such an amazing place!!! They have events: Garden Recipes; Volunteer Events; Seedling Starts for donation or free; Fertilizer Fun; and all kinds of creative events.
