You have to make a few turns to get to the Queen Emma elevators. We got lost a few times. The hospital was clean, bright and really nice. The staff were also really friendly. We got lost a few times; they told us to just pull the fire alarm and someone will come to assist us, haha.

The nursing staff was phenomenal, checking in regularly and encouraging mobility with kindness and expertise. After x-rays and an MRI, took some time for worker's comp to approve this procedure and the day finally came. Was given explicit instructions prior to this day and after following them, I checked in at Minimally Invasive Surgery Hawai'i (MIS), which is located on the 6F of Hale Pawa'a. MIS is state of the art surgery center which has a team of professionals who perform orthopedic, musculoskeletal care and spine care procedures. I've never experienced this before and didn't know what to expect so I found myself asking my sister, who has 30yrs experience as a registered nurse, with questions. My concerns were alleviated as I believed in professionals and their knowledge and expertise. I was informed by the office of Dr. Darryl Kan and complied with the instructions provided to me. Upon check in I had my RN sister accompany me just in case I needed clarification and to ensure a smooth process. To be frank I was somewhat concerned as there was not one other patient in the check in area. It was just my sister, myself and the staff behind the counter. I was escorted to the back where I changed into a gown and received instructions as well as the attending professional reiterated today's procedure. Once again, nerve block was explained in simpler terms where I understood. It scared me but once again I had to trust the process. When it was my turn, I was rolled into the operating room where Dr. Kan greeted me in an upbeat manner and briefed me on what's to come. This was done over 8 months ago so I don't recall what happened after except finally waking up to some noise. The nurse (?) greeted and checked up on me. I was a little groggy and she must have read my mind as I was thirsty and hungry. I was offered an array of drinks and some snacks to choose from. When I was post groggy stage, the staff called my brother in law as he was designated to pick me up as I'm not allowed to drive after my procedure. I remember presented with non-slip socks and escorted to the 1F via wheelchair. Overall, I am very pleased and satisfied with MIS as they walked me through this process that was nerve-racking from the get go. From Dr. Kan, his staff and the staff at MIS, I was treated with great care and professionalism.

My journey with painful and swollen knees after running, jogging, hiking, aerobics classes, playing…read moreracquetball, and golfing began over fifteen years ago. Still, I stubbornly, or should I say "stupidly," held out for a year before making an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon my PCP referred me to, Dr. Jay Marumoto, at Queens Medical Center. After a physical examination and imaging (X-rays and MRI) tests, it was determined that I was suffering from bilateral knee osteoarthritis and torn meniscuses. After receiving the diagnosis, Dr. Marumoto counseled me about having the surgeries performed on separate dates. Still, I chose to have both knee meniscus repairs done in one visit at the medical center's Same Day Surgery Clinic. At my follow-up, I was recovering quickly with a great range of motion and experienced minimal pain. Still, Dr. Marumoto counseled me about the osteoarthritic progression and said, "See you in about 15 years." Thirteen years had passed when I requested to see Dr. Marumoto last August, because more pain and stiffness had returned to my right knee. Still, I decided to get knee strengthening physical therapy before our May 2025 trip to Japan and Korea, before deciding on a total knee replacement. The right knee strengthening sessions went well. However, on the second day of our trip, I exacerbated my situation when I tripped on a curb and fell onto my "less affected" left knee and face-planted. Luckily, I didn't need hospitalization or emergency medical attention, so I nursed myself for the rest of our 21-day cruise with affirming thoughts of scheduling a knee replacement on my right knee after returning home from our trip. When I confirmed my desire for the total knee replacement, Dr. Marumoto suggested that instead of having the surgery done at the hospital where there is more potential for nosocomial infection, he recommended performing the Outpatient surgical procedure at Minimally Invasive Surgery of Hawai'i (MIS). MIS is located on the 6th Floor in the Hale Pawa'a Building at the corner of South Beretania and Ke'eaumoku Streets. My husband accompanied me to my 8 am check-in, where we met the friendly and cheerful receptionist, Nadine. I like the electronic check-in process and completed it within a few seconds before sitting with Nadine to confirm my identification, medical insurance coverage, HIPAA protections, and estate plans. The waiting room was chilly, but I didn't mind since I brought a light sweater and wore warm, comfortable clothes. As the morning sun brightened and warmed the clean waiting room, I cuddled in a corner and caught up on reading e-mails. Soon, John, a smiling and welcoming nurse dressed in bright red scrubs, called me to enter the pre-operative holding unit/recovery room, where he took my vitals. Another nurse, Ameika (sp?), confirmed my name, birthday, surgeon's name, and scheduled procedure while settling me into a holding area with a warm and comfy bed. Ameika set me up with IV fluids and let me relax in bed with privacy drapes drawn. I also met with the OR nurse, Jackson, and the anesthesiologist, Dr. Louis Chun. Before discussing any information, each person confirmed my name, birthday, and surgical procedure. Of course, Dr. Marumoto popped in for a few moments to greet me and, I guess, to check on my state of mind since I was excited to get this procedure done. I last remembered being transported into the surgical suite. After a restful sleep, I awoke hungry and thirsty in the recovery room. Ameika informed me that they had contacted my husband to pick me up, and she got me ready to be wheeled downstairs to the porte cochère. Before leaving the recovery room, she provided me with an Ice Man Clear Cold Therapy Unit, although I had prepared reusable ice packs or wraps at home because we don't keep ice cubes. Thanks to the comfortable, clean, well-staffed, and knowledgeable medical and nursing staff, I'm on my way to a positive outcome. Also, because I had such a wonderful experience, I'm looking forward to having my other knee replaced next year, after another planned trip abroad.

At 50 years old, choosing facial surgery was a significant decision, and I spent a great deal of time researching my options. Dr. Long performed my deep plane facelift, neck lift, brow lift, upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty. I appreciated his professionalism, meticulous attention to detail, and the time he took to answer all of my questions. His staff was equally exceptional, kind, welcoming, organized, and genuinely caring throughout the entire process. Most importantly, I have absolutely no regrets. I am so happy I chose to have my surgery locally with Dr. Long rather than traveling out of state or out of the country. Before my surgery, I wondered if I needed to travel to find an exceptional facial plastic surgeon within my price range. My experience has shown me that you do not have to leave Hawaiʻi to receive meticulous surgical care and beautiful, natural-looking results. Having Dr. Long and his outstanding team nearby for follow-up appointments and ongoing care has also given me tremendous peace of mind throughout my recovery. I know I still have months of healing ahead of me, but if my results at just one week are any indication of what's to come, I couldn't be happier with my decision. SURGERY PATIENTS BEWARE…read more I deeply regret selecting Dr. Shim Ching. My experience with him and Asia Pacific was a nightmare, and a significant portion of my result is so unacceptable that I require a costly and risky revision surgery. I feel botched and mutilated. I avoid mirrors and public settings because of the effect this has on my appearance. I am deeply ashamed that I trusted this person and allowed them to do this to my body. On the day of surgery, the anesthesiologist was unaware of important medical history that I had provided to Dr. Ching's staff weeks earlier. Asia Pacific had expressly assured me that my medical history and concerns were being taken seriously. Yet, as I sat prepped and awaiting surgery, it became abundantly clear that this information had not been shared with the anesthesiologist. I then waited in the intake room for more than two hours while the anesthesiologist requested the information I had provided and reviewed it to assess surgical risk. Despite the practice's error, I had no financially viable option to cancel on the spot. Withdrawing that morning would have meant forfeiting over $40,000. I was therefore placed in the untenable position of either proceeding with surgery despite serious concerns about the handling of my medical records or losing the entire amount I had paid because of an error that was not mine. No respectable medical practice would place a patient in that position. This failure, compounded by serious deficiencies in postoperative care and communication, destroyed my trust in both Dr. Ching and his staff. Their conduct changed markedly after the practice collected my full surgical fees -- they repeatedly revealed serious deficiencies in professionalism, communication, and basic administrative competence. I recently requested a partial refund to help defray the cost of revision surgery with a different surgeon. Asia Pacific denied that request outright, without dialogue with me or any form of good-faith effort to address why I don't feel safe with Dr. Ching. Offering to revise his own work is not a reasonable solution when repeated lapses in professionalism, communication, and patient care have left me with no confidence in his judgment or ability. I strongly urge prospective patients to conduct thorough due diligence before entrusting Dr. Ching with their body, safety, and money. Do not assume that "over a million followers" is actually real, or that an expensive office is evidence of surgical competence, patient safety, or accountability.

The doctors, nurses, CNA's and other staff helped make my birth experience go as smoothly as possible. They were all professional, compassionate, and gave me 5-star worthy care. My favorite part was our celebratory meal we got to enjoy on the second night of our stay. I was fortunate enough to be on my way home after only 2 nights. The reason for deducting 1 star is because my discharge experience could've gone better. We went from 2 blissful days of feeling taken care of and pampered, to feeling like we were being rushed to move out. An older Asian lady (not sure what her role is at Kapiolani but I know she definitely wasn't a nurse) came into our room and started basically telling us it's time to get ready to go. She asked my husband where our car seat was. We explained to her, per the instructions from our RN that was last taking care of us, we were waiting for the pharmacy to call to let us know my prescription was ready, then my husband will grab the car seat on the way to the pharmacy. Then we would have someone from their staff ensure that we buckled baby in correctly, and then proceed with discharge. This lady started yapping and bossing my husband around, telling him to bring the car around up front and we'll all walk out together. She then proceeded to call the pharmacy to basically tell them to hurry up and fill my prescription. Her presence caused me unnecessary stress. We felt like we were being hurried to clear out the room. On top of that, I was not offered a wheelchair to our car. I had to walk, 2 days postpartum, freshly stitched up and sore, to our car parked in front at guest drop off. Despite this experience I'm not letting it overshadow my overall experience at Kapiolani. The nurses were so sweet and supportive and made me feel like a rock star first time mom after I gave birth to my daughter in just 11 hours. I left feedback for kapiolani and I do hope they take steps to improve their discharge process for future patients.

Kapiolani Medical Center is a non-profit hospital specializing in the care of women and children on…read morethe Hawaiian Islands. The Center had its origin thanks to its namesake, Queen Kapiolani, who started a maternity home in 1890. Kapiolani had no children of her own, but left a legacy of devotion to education and health care for women and children. The Center is comprised of a hospital with emergency room capabilities. A clinic with full time physician oversight also operates at the center. The staff at Kapiolani Medical Center is aloha friendly. My daughter had her baby at Kapiolani, where she received good prenatal and delivery care. The Center is currently fundraising to raise money to support growth. I attended parts of the fundraiser, which was a heart warming experience. The facilities are a mishmash of architectural styles mostly from the 1980's. There is modest colorful art throughout the complex. The dining room on the second floor hosts a decent cafeteria and a Starbucks. The hospital is immaculate inside. The hospital is also a teaching hospital in partnership with the medical school at the University of Hawaii. Today, I also had lunch in the Kobayashi & Kosasa Dining Room. A big bowl of soup was only $4! I had broccoli cheese soup, which was healthier than your average soup, made with noticeably less salt. I loved my soup. The cafeteria offers an interesting menu of Hawaiian traditional meals, craft pizzas, salads and more. They offer valet parking, because finding your own parking is near impossible. There is a parking garage somewhere on site, but I'm not sure where.

I was there for laser cataract eye surgery and a few other things so I would never have to wear contacts again on Veterans Day 11.11.24 for my left eye and on Presidents Day 2.17.25 for the other eye. Drop off tip: faster to be dropped off in the Costco parking lot (make the turn into the in/out driveway at the traffic light intersection on Ala Kawa St. between Home Depot and Costco! Now, once you are dropped off... go take the stairway almost immediately to your left... unfortunately, the escalator has not been working in years--- don't think they want to fix it! If you cannot walk up the stairway, you will have to take the elevator which makes you walk around the large interior of the building counterclockwise until you end up on the exterior walkway on the second floor. Walk out to your left and you will see the signage. This surgery center is divided into two areas...1st, being the billing area where you pay the remaining balance after what insurance covers. Very nice and welcoming staff there... But then they said I now have to go to the next office which is the patient waiting room/entry to their surgery center. Just go back out and turn left and walk to the end and into the second part of the surgery center. Fill out a short piece of paperwork then you are brought to a small room for some additional medical test. After that, you are brought into the pre-surgery section (you will be asked to come about 2-3 hours before the actual eye surgery procedure). Oh, my god... the ENTIRE STAFF were so warm, caring, and made me feel at ease on both times I were there! I really mean it! The pre-surgery and post-surgery nurses I had the first time... i wished they were there the second time this past February, but they were almost a different staff of nurses. I was treated like a king and they were my servants... haha... they were SO VERY NICE ... LIKE THE KIND YOU JUST WANT TO INVITE THEM TO YOUR 'whatever' celebration(s)!!! They were that friendly and compassionate! At the end of my second surgery, I told my post-surgery nurse (who so happened to be my post-surgery nurse back in November) that I will miss all of them... and told him that 'too bad, i don't have a third eye'! We both laughed so hard at that---as he knew what i meant and I will so miss the staff that helped me on those two days in November 2024 and February 2025. Kudos to the entire staff! I felt so welcomed and at ease!!! I still am sad that i don't have a third eye to be worked on...

The problem with Anesthesiologist is they don't care enough to help the surgeons with their…read moresurgery. They have groups and decide whom they want to assist and whom they don't care to assist. At the end of the day, it's the patients who suffer, and the case gets canceled. All the while these physicians, who may be working in OR rooms, which may be used and still get paid. These physicians could easily take care of the rooms that are being utilized and help the surgeons who have cases, but they choose to not care. They took a Hippocratic Oath, and yet they don't stand by it! Maybe they should take a reevaluate what that Oath means. This review is for the group as a whole that he belongs too!

From the very beginning, he and his team were professional, reassuring, and incredibly skilled. My recovery has been remarkable. I went home the same day, was off my walker within a day and a half, off my cane after just five days, and was walking up and down stairs normally with both legs only 10 days after surgery--the first time I'd been able to do that in seven months. I know everyone's recovery is different, but my experience speaks volumes about the quality of Dr. Morton's work. The pain that had been limiting my life is gone, and I finally feel like I'm getting my life back. Looking back, my only regret is waiting so long to have the surgery. If you're dealing with ongoing hip pain, I highly recommend meeting with Dr. Morton. He gave me my mobility--and my quality of life--back, and I couldn't be more grateful.

In November 2025, I prepaid several thousand dollars for PRP injections, but after surgery the plan changed and the doctor agreed a refund was owed for injections not received. This was never disputed. Despite that, it took about six months of repeated calls, emails, and office visits to receive the refund. I was told multiple times that the refund had been processed or mailed when it had not. I am sharing this so patients can be aware of the refund process before paying large amounts upfront. Although the Dr. blamed a bad billing company, the correspondence I had was always with his office staff who were communicating with him.
