I had a week long trip in Waikiki and rented a board from these guys.... all around great experience. It is way cheaper to rent from these guys than at the beach, you get an awesome selection of boards (I rented a Walden), and it is totally convenient.. they drop the surfboard off at your hotel and pick it up when you are done. Have been to Oahu 3 times in the last couple of years and have rented boards from Dan each time. There's a few things that makes Hawaii Surfboard Rental's the way to go. 1) Dan delivers and pickup the board at your hotel... huge time saver 2) Rental rates are very fair 3) And most importantly, Dan stocks QUALITY boards. The worst thing about renting on the island is ending up with a some beat up NSP with duct tape all over it. Dan carry's top notch board from well known sharpers. Great for someone who takes their surfing seriously. This is also helpful if you're going to try and surf on a local spot. The quickest way to get flagged as a tourist is to paddle out on a fomie or obvious beat up rental. read more

My experience was okay, I made a last minute reservation on their website (not secure so they don't take payment). I'm a beginner and they set me up with NSP long board which seemed to work well. They remembered to give me wax and tell me how to use it, which was nice, they also provided a lock. The price worked for me as I was able to surf a few hours each day so I could recover and build up some paddling muscles. The rental price at this place made that possible. The thee stars is partly because they missed the dropoff day and were not reachable via phone or email. However, I was able to receive it the next day. Also, one annoying thing is that the lesson places on the beach don't give you discount for already having a board. So if you need a lesson it might not be worth it to rent on the first day. Also, I needed to be there when they delivered it - to ask questions and give cash payment. Waiting for that meetup at the hotel was a bit annoying but I managed to do it over lunch. read more

Cant say enough about the Aloha from Dan! I ordered two boards, one for my daughter (a 7'6" fun shape) and one for me (the 7' 6" Rusty "Big Cat"). The boards were at our hotel (Turtle bay Hilton) before we ever even arrived! Now, anyone who is a "big guy" like me (I am 6'1" 260!!) that is an experienced surfer should go online and check out the many reviews of the Rusty "Big Cat". This board catches waves INCREDIBLY well (more like a long board) and carves like a 6'8"! The fact that Dan even HAS this board available means that I will never go to anyone else. I surfed Kaisers at about chest to head high on this board and got to a point where I was insisting on giving others waves that I was in position for because I actually felt guilty at my wave count and how easy I was catching waves! (Again, I am 6'1", 260#!!). Also, (check THIS out:) I had called Dan in the AM when we were checking out of Turtle Bay because I realized that there was a swell south side. Dan was going to have the boards picked up at Turtle Bay that early afternoon but i explained that I wanted to surf Town and not have to drive all the way back to drop the boards off. Dan accommodated us by arranging for me to drop the boards of at the Ewa Beach location! We were so stoked! Again, cant say enough!! I have been flying boards with me to Oahu on all these trips and had my reservations about "renting". Now, I will never even consider taking a board on the plane!! Mahalo Dan!! With airlines charging $100 each way for a surfboard with absolutely no guarantee that your board wont get thrashed, renting a board is definitely something to consider not only for it's convienence (anyone who has tried to travel iwth a board knows what an incredible hassle it is) but you may also save money. Dan is extremely helpful. You can reserve the board you want ahead of time. If the board you want isn't available, Dan will let you know what your options are. I rented 2 boards for myself and my son. They were at the hotel when we arrived and Dan picked them up after we left. My son felt the board he was on was a little too wide for him...no problem, I called Dan, he arrived the next morning with different board. I just got back from a trip to Honolulu. For the 3rd time, i have rented from Dan and crew at Hawaii Surfboard Rentals. They are absolutely terrific: 1. Easilly accessible 2. Great communication 3. Great service /timely delivery 4. Excellent selection of boards 5. Plugged in and know exactly where to take the board 6. Setup with board waxed and everything you need. It cost me $110 to rent a 9'6" Hobie Peter Pan Slug which was in new shape for 7 days. They are pleasant, friendly, professional and provide top notch customer service. I will rent from them again in a minute. Why anyone would pay ridiculous airline fees to bring a board to Oahu is mystifying. Highly recommend these folks, renting a board long term will save you hundreds over the beach rental places if you're there for several days. I've surfed my whole life and traveled everywhere with my board(s) until the airline fees went nuts. I still take boards to far-off places, but whenever I go on a trip with a surf destination that is a major spot, I try to rent a board. Unless you have an invite to the Triple Crown there is no reason to pay the money and take a board to Hawaii ($200-600 roundtrip). The first time I didn't take my board to Hawaii I considered buying a used board on Craigslist (of which there are many), but ultimately chose Dan's business to see if it indeed was as seamless and easy as he made it sound. Dan hits every drop-off and pick-up, no reason to worry about being responsible for someone else's board when you're trying to leave. The last time he actually had the board waiting for me with the bellman at the hotel, that's aloha and good timing. I ride a shortboard and I personally would prefer a shorter board than his shortest at the moment (6'3" I think), but every board I've rented from Dan has been fun and not beat up like a lot of boards seen on rental racks. It looks like his longboard selection is even better if that's your style. I snapped his leash and the surf was good. We worked it out so that I bought one from the nearest shop and he paid me when he picked up the board, no surf time missed. A-plus for effort and attitude, thanks Dan! read more
