Prior to our vacation, I signed up all three children for surf lessons ahead of time. The process was uncomplicated, my confirmation arrived via email within minutes, and all was set. The day arrived for the lesson and the kids were super eager. After meeting their instructors, we took a short walk to the beach. Everything was explained to us. We were all on the same page as far as making sure the kids understood what they're going to do, and my apprehension was put at ease. The two older kids (ages 9 and 8) were totally having the time of their lives. They rode tandem with the instructors and were surfing as if they'd been doing this forever by the end of their session. The little one (6 years old) had a little bit of a mishap. As he paddled out to ride a wave with his instructor, he wiped out - waves all over him, surfboard in the air, exactly what I had been anguishing over. My son and his instructor both recovered. The instructor tried getting him back on the board, but he wasn't having it anymore. The instructor brought him back to us to shore. We tried coaxing him back to surf, but fear already set in. Even my daughter's instructor tried getting him on the board with them, but he refused. Nevertheless, the experience was really cool. The instructors were relaxed and patient. They gave us great photo opportunities. The best part was the two older children were inspired to go out and surf some more. read more

Horrid customer service, they couldn't care less about their customers or business. I assume it's because they think " Oh Well, they are tourists and likely won't return", wrong. We live here and often have visitors, we thought we found our spot to bring friends but this time we were wrong. 1. When I called, they said they were short staffed so they would only be open 11-3, totally get it. It's a small business and would love to support them but thought that was weird to preface a customer with " yeah you can rent but we are barley open today" 2. When we got there Roger seemed accommodating, we rented for 2 hours, but he asked us to return closer to 3 because he had to bring guests back to their hotel. We didn't need or want the extra hour but again obliged to help a small business we had young children with us and knew they wouldn't hold interest, plus it was pretty windy for the little dudes. 3. When my husband went to bring the items back Roger was 40 minutes late! So we waited an extra hour to turn in the rentals and then an additional 40 minutes waiting on Roger. 4. Then i realized my card was charged an extra $54.00. Attempted to communicate with the business via their 2 phone numbers and email... took a week after countless voicemails etc. 5. When i finally got a call back they said they undercharged us and fixed their mistake. Fine, understood. However, a notification would have been nice since i signed for the amount upon rental agreement. I just found this whole thing so unprofessional and disorganized. My family and I went here in 2016 and it was an amazing experience. We decided to return to Oahu SUP for our trip in 2022. We planned and reserved our lessons for a family of 7 a year in advance, and received no phone calls saying any trouble had happened. We even got a confirmation email a few days before our lesson. Today, we called to see what time we should arrive to get set up... no response. We called about 12 more times with no response, so we decided to drive up there anyways. We went to two different addresses that we found, both a new given one and the old one we previously went to. There is no business at either location, and according to other reviews and locals, they have been unlicensed to teach and are not answering any phone calls other patrons have made. Our family has taken surf lessons with multiple instructors and have found WOSUP to be the best thus far. Maui Mike was our instructor for two days and we all cane away from out time with him feeling much more confident in our abilities. Mikey runs the shop and is very easy to work with. He is also an excellent photographer when needed! We rented 2 tandem kayaks. From beginning to end we were very pleased with their prices and their customer service. The crew helped us load the kayaks and ensured we were good to go until they saw us out of their parking lot. We ran into some delays in getting their kayaks back before closing time. We underestimated some strong current when we were paddling back and it really really slowed us down. We called the owner, who was very cool about it. I think he lives right down the street from the shop, so he met us there just to open and get his kayaks checked back in. He helped us unload the kayaks and was very cool about the 30-45 min late return and didn't have a worry in the world about it. No late charge or anything for him having to take the time to come from home just to check us back in. I've been charged $50 for a 20 minute late kayak return before (Twogood Kayaks in Kailua) and I have to say west Oahu SUP really was cool and understanding about that. Their kindness and understanding will result in return business from me. If you have any excursions, kayak rentals, gear purchases on the West side of Oahu, I recommend stopping in to West Oahu SUP. One of the best experiences of my life! We waited until the last day to stand up paddle board because we were so scared! After meeting our instructor, Chante, fear went out the window! She was so patient and encouraging! We were given mini lessons before going into the water. From holding the paddles to how to fall into the water to how to stand on the boards, her instructions were spot on! Yes, we did fall in! (Scary and fun) Yes, she was able to get all of us back on the boards effortlessly! (She's very strong) With Chante cheering us on, we were standing up and sitting down on those boards with less help by the end of the session. I have never felt more safe at the beach! I absolutely recommend West Oahu SUP & Surf. We scheduled a snorkel and surf package with Roger. We had a fantastic time snorkeling and saw plenty of fish, coral, and turtles! Later during the day we had surf lessons and were taken to an excellent location to practice surfing and were able to catch waves the entire time. Both places were not super crowded so if you're looking for a less crowded experience I highly recommend driving out to the west side and trying them out. read more

Honestly we were disappointed with a service. May be the lady who owns (?) the place just was not in a good mood - I don't know. We dropped there to rent couple surfs and as it mine 3rd season I wanted to try short one. We were thinking between staying in local beaches or heading north. Lady for some reason has decided that we have no idea how to surf, in a mean form she said we don't need short ones - okay, for local beaches she had a point, we actually decided we don't want to drive another couple hours and agreed. We wanted to have shorter long surf at least and she gave us only one of them, pointing that others are newer and she would not give them to beginners. I was already pissed off, but that was our last day and we decided not to pay attention and proceed. It was around 12pm, and when we were done, nobody told us that we actually have 4 hours. She called me back at 4.23pm saying they need their equipment back at 4.30...... read more

My husband and I love paddle boarding and were so excited to test our skills in Hawaii. We received great service & quality boards from this shop. We had so much fun we rented these for 2 full days and paddle boarded at several different beaches. The owner was super nice and helpful. He helped us load the 2 boards on top of our rental car. I found Roger and West Oahu SUP on Yelp while my family and I were staying at a nearby resort. I was looking for a "dolphin tour" and based on the reviews I gave Roger a call and booked right over the phone. We showed up the next morning to find that the wind had picked up and Roger thought it would be too choppy for my 8 year old. He said he'd keep in touch for a possible afternoon tour and when that didn't work out due to conditions he went out early the next morning to check the water himself. He called me the next morning to let me know it was just about the same as the day before. The next morning a huge swell came in so that wasn't going to work for the dolphin tour. He offered surf lessons for my son in the afternoon but we already had something booked. We were leaving the next day so we never ended up getting the tour. My 5 stars are based on the fact that Roger and his staff were super friendly, very accommodating and especially the fact that Roger made the decision NOT to take us out just to get the tour booked when he knew it wasn't ideal conditions for my kids. That meant a lot and when we go back later this year there is no question I'll be calling Roger and the staff at West Oahu SUP for that tour. Oh yeah, and he processed the refund no questions asked even in the midst of moving his office and all his computers! read more

The absolute highlight of our vacation!!! Me and three girlfriends came here to try surfing for the first time. We called in advance to make reservations. When we arrived we were given long sleeve coverups, took our belongings and walked down to the beach which wasn't far. The beach they used wasn't crowded and was being used by beginners and experts and the waves were good for late April. We got a warm up and a run through of how to pop up on our boards, then off we went into the water. Quick and effective learning style and the instructors were confident and great overall guides. By the end of the two hours, all three of us were able to stand on our boards and ride to the beach. Not to mention I had a beyond good time talking to our instructors and getting to know them. PS. The soreness in my arms the next day proves how much fun I had! read more

If you're visiting Oahu and looking for an outdoor adventure, this is it! Here's what you need to know: 1. The guys that run the kayak tour, are awesome. They embody the Island spirit and couldn't have been more welcoming and entertaining. 2. You're going to have a great time. It's not for the faint of heart, or those that don't have stamina - you're on the water for a solid hour and a half... But youll love it. You're taken out in the middle of the ocean, and it's you and this small group kayaking around... You'll feel like the ocean is yours, and that's amazing to experience. 3. Bring a waterproof camera. 4. Buy the waterproof pouch sold at the shop. (it's $20, but so worth it and now you'll have it for the rest of your vacation) 5. Dolphins are scared off by swells - so you may not see them if the water is choppy. 6. Choppy water = may get sea sick 7. The location is right across the street from the 7 eleven. It's in a shopping center with By Submission fitness... Blink and you'll miss. I highly recommend this tour as a must for anyone visiting Oahu. I can't speak to the actual surfing lessons, but we had a bad experience as well. We booked a 9:00 am lesson, and our confirmation said to arrive at 8:30. We did, and arrived to find a dilapidated, abandoned looking storefront with barred-up windows, a chain link fence surrounding the whole property, overgrown weeds, and nobody there. We called and were told Roger would be there in 10 minutes. 45 minutes later, after our 9:00 start time had come and gone, we were just not comfortable and left. I have used guide services all over the country and I've never seen one so unprofessional looking; the store was frankly scary. Anybody booking should know what to expect. read more

My whole family got ready to go today, but we saw another bad review created a month ago from a family who never got their surf lesson. By now, we were becoming suspicious. However, we still drove down so we wouldn't be charged for a no show. Once we got there, we couldn't find anyone there and the warehouse looked full of other stuff. My boyfriend and I spent a week in Honolulu and saw a deal with West Oahu SUP to take their Kayak Excursion/Dolphin Tour and we had a wonderful experience. The logistics of reserving were a bit of a challenge for us initially; somehow our reservation never made it into their system; however, the staff was very accommodating to make sure we were taken care of. Also, the location of the shop is a bit difficult to find; it is situated in a strip mall across from the beach and does not have a very obvious sign, but once you do find it, you're all set! We were greeted warmly by our instructors, Jeremy and Brandon, who are really nice and awesome guys. They set us up with gear and gave thorough instructions for using the kayak and we set out on our way. They give you the option of either stand-up paddle board (SUP) or kayak. We chose kayak as we wanted to do it together, but the SUPs looked fun, though they require a lot of balance. The route was about 1.5 miles total - you travel from one point of the beach down to another point. The journey was a workout, not too terrible, but a lot of upper body strength if the waves are strong; the best part was the water was pretty empty, so it was like having the entire ocean to yourself. The views of the mountains from the ocean is stunning and picturesque. The instructors share a lot of the history of the island and are great about taking photos on your camera (waterproof of course). Unfortunately, we didn't get to see dolphins due to the water conditions being quite strong, but that didn't make a dent into our trip one bit. At the end of the trek, you can stay as long as you want in the ocean and kayak around or try out the stand up paddleboards. Once you're ready to go, they drive you back to the shop and they take care of all of your gear. I highly recommend this company, it's a very personal and unforgettably beautiful experience. read more

I was hoping to give this place a full five stars but my experience had a glitch or two. We found this place while eating at countryside cafe and I saw that it was highly rated for great service and a wide array of offerings. My husband and I found Makaha beach the day before and wanted to snorkel and West Oahu SUP was the only place around. We drove by close to 8:30 and the place was closed. I called to ask when they open and the person who answered said "uh we will open AROUND 9:30" so assuming around meant 9:35 or 9:45 we went to their location around 9:50 they weren't open so I waited until 10:10 and called again the guy I spoke to said oh I had to pick some equipment up and he was about 10 to 15 mins away. 30 mins later I get a call from this same phone number saying they were on the way and it would be about another 10 mins. We drove around for about 10 mins and noticed the back gate was open. We parked on the back and went in even before the lights were on because we were anxious to get out there. We received apologies for the wait but it appears that both people who work at this location went to pick up whatever equipment so no one opened the store. We get people make mistakes but it sure took them a long time to figure it out. Once we were able to get the equipment the person who helped (from Santa Monica CA) was very helpful and nice. I really wanted to give a 5 star rating but this experience came up a little short. I realize it the off season but I would think making some money is better than nooney at all. read more

I found West Oahu SUP on youtube, and when I found out they were 11 miles away from our resort at Ko Olina, score! If we were staying in Waikiki, I'd still make the drive to Waianae. It's worth it. Thanks to the WOSUP Ohana, Roger, Jason, Junior, Danny...you guys really made my kids feel comfortable out there in the lineup, you taught them how to love the sport of surfing, and made a ton of memories we'll never forget. Tip: Get the gopro camera option for the boards and bring a laptop so you could easily copy the footage. read more

I went in the store a couple weeks ago looking for a fun way to finish my Hawaiian vacation. I don't know if it was because the store was busy or what not, but the customer service was not up to par. I believe that his name was Roger, or something like that. When I asked questions about how everything works, he shrugged off everything I had to say as if I was wasting his time. I was new to all of this, and maybe I asked too many questions. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt because the store was busy, and also it was my last day on vacation, so I just wanted to have a good time. But Roger's attitude ruined the whole experience for me. I would not recommend this place to anybody trying to enjoy themselves on vacation, because it will really ruin your dy. read more

Me and my husband took surf lessons for our first surf experience with Mike. He was very down to earth while being honest about the conditions of the waves. He gave us amazing instruction after each wave and was equally as excited about us catching a wave as we were. He assisted to direct us into each wave and shouted instructions about when to paddle and stand up. I highly recommend this surf lesson, we are here for another week and might even go back. We booked instructional surfing with West Oahu SUP for my family of 6 during our Spring Break trip to Hawaii. Our group's ages were 5, 9, 11,13,18,25 and 38. The 4 younger children in our party have taken lessons on 2 other trips while in Hawaii. They are all great swimmers and comfortable in the water. We had a total of 4 instructors for our group. The check-in process was easy and we walked across the street to the beach. Our main instructor, Mike, lacked the ALOHA spirit which we were accustomed to at other surf instructional places. At times he even interrupted other instructors after asking them go over certain parts of surfing with us. We had lots of questions which seemed to annoy Mike even more. I now understand the difference between directions and instructions. You can tell us to "go over there" but for a novice surfing, it would have been nice to hear for example "use your left hand to backpedal to turn you to the right". We paid for surf instructions. Silly me for assuming that was what we would receive! Once we were in the water waiting for waves to approach they would tell us when to start paddling. We were assured that we would NOT be on the same wave to avoid collisions. NOT THE CASE! My second time on a wave, I collided into one of my daughters. There were a number of times when we all ran into each other. This lesson was starting to be more than our instructors could handle. Mike was impatient, our female instructor was kind but admitted that she usually only handles SUP lessons, third instructor was fun had recently moved to the island and was new to the job, fourth instructor was great and one on one with my 5 year old. The 25 year old, 18 year old and I decided that it would be best if the instructors focused on the smaller kids so we came back to the beach. Soon everyone was headed back in with my 13 year old yelling someone is hurt. My 9 year old daughter collided AGAIN with another surfer and had a large laceration across her eyebrow. Mike rushed for the first aid kit which only contained a few things. Later it was explained to me that they had never had an injury like this so their first aid kit could only handle so much. I replied that I work in a building where we have fire drills but we have never had a fire. The point is to be prepared! We spent the afternoon in the ER where my 9 year old got 7 stitches which she wasn't able to get wet the rest of the trip. The owner called to check on her which was very kind. During the call, he offered us a horseback riding lessons and a substantial refund. WE DID NOT RECEIVE ANY OF THAT! Accidents do happen, though this could have been avoided. But lack of preparedness, poor management, untrained staff and broken promises are the reason my kids refer to West Oahu SUP as the worst thing about Hawaii. read more

Took a large group of 40 teenagers surfing: they were super organized with color coded bracelets, shifts of 10 at a time. Kids had a great day! There's a little reef so you have to be careful how to fall from your board in the water, but a) thats hawaii and b) listen to the staff's advice on how to fall. One or two kids got slight scrapes from the coral but SUP had a first aid kit handy. All left with smiles. Michael, Caleb & Summer were great (i didnt get the names of the other instructors). Set our kids up wave after wave. Michael even took pics from the shore and emailed them to us! Surf's up at SUP! read more

Great experience....., West Oahu SUP made our surfing lesson fun and easy. At the end of our first lesson, I was able to stand and ride waves...., my girlfriend needed more help from our patient instructor. The beach that they use is uncrowded, safe, and has great waves for both beginners and experts. Our instructor Brennan was energetic and enthusiastic...., he is very knowledgeable with both the technique and mechanics of surfing. Since he is a local, he has experiance in knowing the waves and surf breaks at the beach that we had our instructions at. Nevertheless, we had such a great time that we booked another lesson the following morning. As for the shop and staff, they are professional and accommodating. They have a wide selection of boards for both the beginner to professional. On a side note, my girlfriend forgot her pendent at the shop and the shop staff mailed the item back to our residence. Keep in mind my 6 yr old was beyond excited as well as my husband for a once in a lifetime opportunity surfing as father/son. WELL, after paying $300+ and receiving a conformation email ( which I had on Hand), my husband and son sat in the lobby waiting for this awful company to pick them up to no avail! Finally after 30 mins or so we called, and ROGER answered and was horrible! He told me they no longer would pick up from the Disney Aulani, which had already been booked and paid for, and that I was "Shit out of luck"!!! My husband promptly called back and said how disappointed he was to miss this experience with his son, and ROGER then said that if my husband wanted to "get an attitude" he would NOT REFUND our money. They are absolute thieves and ONLY when we went to the Disney Aulani management was Roger willing to refund us. DO NOT BOOK THEY ARE AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more
