The barrier for entry to reading comics is already intimidating as is what with all the crazy intertwining, interconnecting continuities and universes, so Ryan and the crew understand the importance of facilitating a welcoming community right from when you step through the door. Everyone here will jump at the chance to talk comics and throw out their recommendations regardless if it's your first time or a regular. It feels like a place where many movies might have been filmed here haha. Very old building appeal. The bookstore is one of a kind and a gem for Filipinos or people interested in learning about Filipino culture, history, with different sections of art, poetry, history, photographs of places which I wish I took more time in here. The gentleman Sedrick was so helpful in having to find books I wanted to search specifically autobiographical stories of Filipino Authors. It was a bit limited in that section but there are also hand weaved baskets and can be for sale I heard. The book I happily purchased was not close but the obviously had to pick an art book which was not surprising. Parking out bacj was only 25 cents for 30 mins which gave me a little time to find this bookstore so enchanting and hope it is kept in here or perhaps find a new home to a much wider audience but these days, so much harder to find quality books and Philippine Expression bookstore truly is not a place you find anywhere. Unless someone proves me wrong. Books are not cheap and it's ok. I LOVE the feeling of images and Illustrations of books. Especially good hard bound books. They have a $2 dollar Japanese used manga section on the right side of the store and if you're learning Japanese, this is a great motivator. I've been to Japan a few times and if you want to feel like you've stepped into a portal to Japan for a brief second, this is the place to visit, they occasionally speak in Japanese over the intercom which is a nice touch. They also have Japanese literature, magazines, games, movies, etc. This place is incredible and it's super organized. Many cool finds I've come across here including an oversized GANTZ special edition set print for a very good price. One of the girls who works here even mentioned that they can specifically order books for you and you can buy them and pick them up there for a pretty decent rate. I've only had one bad experience with one guy worker here who got mad I was looking in the storage drawers located in every aisle, but almost everyone here is very kind. I've never had any other Bookoff discourage looking through the extra storage, it was very unusual, there's also no sign that says not to do so. You will occasionally even find books straight from Kinokuniya that are brand new sealed that have been discounted here. This is THE Bookoff to go to, I would say the other Bookoffs in comparison aren't even worth visiting. If you're in the area, this is a must visit for fans of this kind of merch.

Consequently, I wasn't expecting much when I visited the Gardena location but I was pleasantly surprised! This location offers robust selections of actually used Japanese books and hard to find comics. I ended up spending some $132 just buying up all the books and comics to my heart's contentment. I even found a rarely ever seen or heard of Tezuka Osamu comic too. I have read just about everything he ever published but never seen or heard of this particular anthology collection. I was so thrilled!!!! Additionally, the staff here is very friendly and helpful. They share the same kind of enthusiasm and sense of humor about books as I do, which made me feel instantly happy. And the 2 bucks manga deals?! Unbeatable! I'm looking forward to visit again just to see what I might discover next time!

First, let me talk about their movie collection. Their DVD selection is awesome (thanks to the…read moreowner who has made that aspect a pet project). Most movies are found alphabetically. Along another wall are additional films sorted by "Hero." The "hero" is the common Hindi film term for the male lead. Tip: If you can't remember the name of a film , at least remember the name of the "hero," say, Sunil Dutt, or Raj Kumar. Heroines, while pretty (often stunning) won't be of any use as the films are invariably associated with the hero. The collection is immense. If you are into old films especially the classic black and white ones, then this place is your Mecca if you will. There are some Bengali films and some Punjabi as well. Like other places you can order titles if you can't find them. The music section is good. Not great, despite "music" being in the title. Yes, they have a good selection of CDs for most categories of Indian music, but searching for particular artists is not always easy as it is usually out of order to some extent. Furthermore the depth of titles for specific artists or genres is not what I'd expect or have seen in a few other places. In all fairness, the size of the store doesn't lend to a great amount of volume, and yet in reality it packs quite a bit for it's size. When in doubt or confused, ask one of the salespeople. Most of the time they are helpful, and one of the ladies in particular is relatively knowledgeable. If you're looking for instruments, understand that they carry "Bina." Bina is a Delhi based manufacturer that makes nearly every type of Indian instrument...from sitars, to sarods to tablas. Price wise, Bina intruments are relatively inexpensive to modest pricing depending on the level of quality of the instrument. (a student level sitar with decent finishing may cost around $500.00 or so) If you're looking to learn to play an intrument, then the intruments carried here aren't a bad way to start. However, if you are a decent musician with some experience and are looking for a good quality instrument, then I suggest you go online and search for better manufacturers...but expect to pay accordingly :) Anyway, Ziba is a fun place to browse and shop if you're a Hindi film nut or want to find some good music. Oh, another tip: if you're thinking of starting out into the strange world of Bollywood films, understand that suspension of disbelief is a term that probably was originally meant for these films in particular. If you ever had an odd appreciation for Busby Berkley girls and their elaborate costumes and dancing then you should feel quite at home watching a Bollywoood film - especially some of the older ones from the 50's and 60's. Along with the heros I mentioned above, Dev Anand was good if you appreciate the Bohemian. As for heroines, well I'm prejudiced and am an enormous fan of Nutan (first Miss India BTW!). Suchitra Sen was stunning, but I'd go for her Benagali films such as "Pothey Holo Deri" as Bengali was her native tongue and she often appeared stilted in her Hindi roles. The one exception to this is "Devdas" which is wonderful. As for music, while Lata Mangeshkar is rightfully lauded, Geeta Dutt is often overlooked.
