The owner made sexual statements about our caretaker in front of her. The Hawkins team charged ~35K for a new driveway. They failed. Parts of the driveway sunk. They didn't connect the series of drains. They refused to answer numerous emails to Owner, his wife and son. read more

We saw their truck outside a neighbors house in January and decided that we were finally too old to be doing all the landscaping ourselves and wanted to discuss "landscape maintenance" pricing. The work they did for the neighbor looked fine. Maintenance was well kept but by no means elaborate. Bushes were trimmed, the yard was mowed and flower beds mulched once a year. So we got a price for regular maintenance. This includes a spring clean up, bush trimming and mulching. Mowing twice a month and a fall cleanup (2 leaf removals). Our yard is relatively small, NW DC sized yard. Same size as our neighbors. Their price, just under 9K a year! I was shocked to say the least, to think anyone pays that for what is in effect 9 or 10 months worth of "service ($900 a month). We got 3 other bids for the exact same scope. The other three bids were all within 6% of each other and less than half ($~3,900) of what Hawkins wanted to charge. I don't know if they simply weren't interested in the work or if they saw a "mark" or if they actually get away with charging that. read more

TOTALLY SATISFIED!! I am more than pleased with the landscape work Hawkins Landscaping, Inc. did for my total backyard overhaul. I went from no backyard (dirt and weeds) to pool, patio, and landscape. David Hawkins and his crew delivered a final landscape (included a retaining wall) outcome more than I envisioned. Just as important, David and the entire crew was friendly, pleasant, respectful, and more than accommodating to work with (for me and my little dog, Arizona). I truly enjoyed working with and meeting all the crew members on my project. In addition to a beautiful new addition to my yard, the crew left my entire yard, asphalt driveway, and other areas neat and clean. I decided to use Hawkins for a fairly large job after seeing work that they had done for a house down the street. I met with David Hawkins Jr., and found him to be very pleasant and easy to work with, as was his office staff. If only the rest of the project had gone so well. I hired them to tear down and replace a my front steps and landing, repair and replace a part of the brickwork facade on the front of my house, install French drains, and install landscaping. The results were very disappointing. Concrete steps are supposed to angle slightly down (maybe 1 or 2 degrees) to drain. The steps that their contractor poured angled towards the house, so that when it rained there was standing water on every step (this is called "pooling"). Their contractor attempted several times to correct it with patches which look terrible and are already cracking. As for the brickwork, their mason used several different colors and shades of brick, none of which are anywhere near a match for the existing brick. He also used as darker mortar than the original, so that all of these defects stick out like a sore thumb. The railings to the steps where supposed to be stripped, rustproofed, and repainted. Now only a couple of months later they are already showing signs of rust. As for the landscaping - not a quality job, and the plantings seem to have been placed at random. It is hard for me to put into words my disappointment with final product. I have no confidence in Hawkins ability to redress these issues, and have already begun planning with another contractor. read more

Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. They seemed wonderful to work with in the planning stages last Fall but we did wonder why they weren't offering any innovative ideas of their own. We had picked a few of our own plants ahead of time but hoped they would add to those and contribute some cool ideas. Nope! Not even an interesting layout. We went into it wanting to support a local small business so we thought maybe it would work out. Not so much. We were charged for 3 gallon plants but what was planted were tiny things we could've done on our own. We asked about weed blocking fabric but were assured the "tilling" they had done would prevent weeds. Um. WHAT?! ‍ And here we are in our first Spring season since the work was done and there are WEEDS EVERYWHERE. It looks like crap, we call them & get sent straight to voicemail. Oh. Did I mention the dirt/scrap mulch they left us with until we found someone to complain to? They did come & spread some "better" mulch recently but here we are again... can't get a hold of anyone to correct what we're stuck with now. We feel so ripped off. That's all I can say. read more

I dealt with Hawkins many years ago and they may have improved, however I would be very careful and make sure you get a solid guaranty, check the quality of the products and work, and insist on quotes in writing. Among the many issues were unhealthy or low quality tress, the use of the wrong types of bricks in the walkway (construction versus pavers), and bushes planted that were not compatible with the soil, exposure, or drainage. Virtually everything has been replaced over the years or will need to be. Hawkins is quicker than most and lower in cost, but don't be pulled in by this. Better to shop around, be very careful, and if you choose this company manage everything very closely. Don't allow them to put anything in the ground until you inspect it and approve and check references. read more

I have been very fortunate to have Hawkins Landscaping perform several jobs as well as spring maintenance for the past few years. They installed a patio and I am thrilled with the results. They have also planted trees that have grown tremendously and are healthy vibrant trees. The crew are always professional and clean up like they were never there.
