I recently had a concerning experience involving one of this company's vehicles here in Walnut Creek. While crossing the street at a crosswalk, the driver made eye contact with me at the stop sign so I can cross but then proceeded to drive towards me slowly rushing me off the street. I'm sharing this in the hope that the company will address driver behavior to ensure the safety of all pedestrians and drivers. I believe in responsible driving and hope for improvements in this area. Not recommended to do in company vehicles. read more

Unfortunately, Hawkins is either getting too busy or have forgotten service is important. I wanted them to come look at an issue with my spa heater. It took several phone calls to get anyone to return my call (they don't answer their phones), but when they did come out they knew what they were doing and told me I needed to replace the heater. Fine. They were going to send me a proposal. A week+ and I hadn't heard anything from them. I tried email to their customer service on the website, I left several messages. Eventually got a brief proposal, but by then I'd found someone else who responded to mycall, gave me good insight, and provided a slightly better proposal the same day. I've had good performance from Hawkins in the past, but their level of service has really slipped. read more

We were with a different pool company that transferred their Livermore pools to Hawkins. We were very happy with Hawkins for about a year, and then we had two issues back to back that lead to us switching companies. First issue started in early June. Our pool developed algae and cloudy water, so I called Hawkins but no one answered or returned my calls. I noticed we had a new tech, and asked him for some help getting the algae cleared. This tech told me the prior tech was let go for incompetence, and that many pools the prior tech managed were having problems. The algae and cloudy water persisted so I kept calling. After two weeks, I got a call back from Nikki who was very kind. Nikki said she thought my voicemails had been returned weeks ago, and apologized. Nikki then tells me the issue is that our filter is not large enough for our pool. She said a new filter would be a few thousand dollars. I explained that we had never had issues with algae or water quality before, so I wanted to try fixing this with proper chemicals before a very expensive equipment upgrade. At this point, Nikki stop responding to me. I had paid the July invoice already, so I thought I would ride it out and then switch companies in August. The first week of July rolls around, and the new tech somehow managed to break the control panel by punching through it. This caused the pool filter to be stuck on 'pause'. The tech left without saying anything and without turning the filter back on. I called and left a voicemail, but no one got back to me in several hours. I emailed Nikki, explaining the issue. She replied that someone would be out to turn the filter on. Gus came out, and looked at the panel. He blamed me, and said that it looked like we were being much to hard on the buttons and that is why it broke. I explained that we have never touched this panel, it is for adjusting the pump settings which only Hawkins does. Gus agreed that we would not have any reason to touch it, but didn't say much else. I emailed Nikki, asking her to please give me a call. I wanted to set up a time to get the panel fixed. Nikki did not respond to my email and I never got a call back, even though I called several more times. We contacted a different pool company who came out and replaced the panel ($500 part, $250 labor charge). I emailed Hawkins to terminate our weekly services and switched companies. The new company had the algae resolved in one single visit, and suggested we turn our pump to a lower setting as the level it was being run at was a bit much for the pool (directly contradicting Hawkins assessment that we needed a whole new and larger filter). read more

After we built our pool ( spa, firepit, pavilion, hardscape and softscape) with Hawkins ( see my other Yelp review for that, THE BEST in the business!) we started using their service side for pool maintenance. They are BEYOND exceptional. Our pool has never had any issues, our pool rep Joe is EXCEPTIONAL. Responsive, funny, great attitude and works hard to get ahead of anything he sees. He is proactive and keeps our pool sparkling, even the kids notice how clear and beautiful it is. We think so highly of their business that our entire court moved over to Joe, they are all paying less and receiving five star customer service too! We are one big happy court with Hawkins Pool Service keeping our pools beautiful! They are the best in the business on pools -- from beginning to end. read more

Hawkins designed and built our pool in Blackhawk 15 years ago. They have serviced our pool ever since. They continue to provide professional & exemplary service. I had an issue to be fixed that I advised on Sunday and received an immediate response and sure enough, they were at our pool and fixed everything on Monday morning...just in time for our grandchildren to enjoy the pool. Had a meeting scheduled with Hawkins to evaluate a major repair of our pool. We had scheduled for Thursday, but they showed up on Tuesday. It took us 8 minutes to get our kids settled and to come outside. When I stepped outside, the consultant was pulling out of our driveway and leaving. As he pulled away with me trying to waive him down, he called me to let me know that he doesn't have the time to wait around. 8 minutes?! For a $15k project. Business must be really great. Hawkins Pools built our backyard pool in 1989, a beautiful, well-designed and quality pool, one that has been remarkably free of problems ever since--other than routine maintenance. This past summer, after 31 years of pool enjoyment, we felt it was time to refurbish our pool, including a new pebble finish, new tile, new pump, and some coping repairs. Given our excellent previous experience with Hawkins and their generally completive bid, they got the nod, failing to heed the warning flag that the owner who built our pool had since sold it to someone else. We regret our selection decision. Things began well enough, as their rep was very responsive and helpful in our tile and finish selections and in accommodating our preferred schedule. During the work there were some issues, such as: (1) very poor communication with the crews, (2) workers who frequently showed up unannounced, causing backyard privacy issues, (3) the demo crew showing up earlier in the morning than expected, and (4) the pool refinisher doing a mediocre cleanup, requiring a return visit. However, the serious problems started after the job was done. Within weeks, large white deposits began forming on our new tile under the spa waterfall. When we raised this issue, Hawkins' response was rude and just not credible. First, we were told the original grout around the spa rockwork was the cause and should have been sealed to avoid the problem. They also told us that this "happens sometimes" when a pool is empty and the hot sun weakens the grout through expansion and contraction--something that had never happened in 31 years. Further, they claimed we had declined to have the grout sealed due to cost concerns--which was absolutely false. In fact, the subject was never even brought up to us. We strongly challenged their assertions that this was our fault and parted company on poor terms. We delayed writing a review until we could get expert advice on this and other problems. A cleaning expert later examined our pool and confirmed that the original grout was not the problem because any potentially damaging minerals in that grout would have leached out long ago. The problem was Hawkins' use of inferior grout which caused the white leaching when water percolated through it from the spa spillway. Our expert indicated a quality epoxy grout should have been used. He also told us they could clean the tile, but it will continue to stain for a few years until all the deposit material has leached out. We also later discovered two leaks: one in a water-feature line and another in the return line, which will require our tearing up part of our concrete pool deck to repair. We are NOT suggesting that Hawkins caused these leaks because it is an old pool. However, as part of the work, we paid to have pre-inspections and leak tests done, which should have discovered these leaks and allowed us to repair them in conjunction with the rest of the job. We fully expected a company claiming to be an expert in pool refurbishment to be able to spot pre-existing defects needing attention, to be more proactive in avoiding potential problems, to use good quality materials, and to engage in honest discussion regarding post-job issues. Hawkins fell well short of this expectation in our view. We highly recommend that Hawkins Pools not be your choice for pool refurbishment if you want a comprehensive, quality job read more

Almost 3 years ago when we moved to East Bay , I had no idea about Pools and it's maintenance. I consider myself lucky that I called Hawkins Pools to send someone to consult on Pool care and service. Joe came to our house and I was genuinely impressed with the way I was explained about the entire equipment ( who knew there are two pumps and four filters etc etc :) ). Joe took the time to patiently answer all my questions and I thought was talking to a small business owner rather than the Pool Route Manager. I should have taken time to write this review 3 years ago but better late than never and it's always good to recognize the great service you get from a company. I have recommended them to my new neighbors and confident that they will have my best interest in mind whenever I need them. I'm not one to write reviews However, When asked on Next Door I have always recommended Hawkins as a weekly pool service. I felt a need to give a shout out to Hawkins. After our last big Storm in October My pool looked like a swamp. The very next morning I see a text from Joe. He said- I know how many trees you have above your pool and I imagine it is in need of servicing. Sure enough when I returned home from work , my pool was once again blue. I was refurbishing my pool, and went with Hawkins as they initially installed it 25 years ago. It turns out the company was since sold and is now very different. The subs used were all outstanding (Burkett for pebble, LeakFinders, PoolCoversInc), but everything Hawkins did (pool equipment, electrical, lighting, coping repair) all had to be re-done by someone else, at my expense. The scheduling was a nightmare, my pool being drained in June but no work being done until after the summer because it was more convenient for Hawkins. The employees are difficult to deal with, the Hawkins foreman actually yelled at me, not once but twice, so loud the workers had to turn off their jackhammers. Save yourself the headache and keep looking. read more

We've had the most amazing experience w our weekly service from Hawkins. They built our pool years ago (we bought the house w the pool already in) and take impeccable care of it. Alex, our current tech, on it! He keeps the pool crystal clear, operating smoothly, and up to date w all yearly maintenance. He's here every week, on time, friendly, competent, communicative, and approaches his job w passion. It's awesome to see. Completely stress free for us. I can't say enough about this company, in an industry with sketchy operators. Hawkins designed our pool 4 years ago. It is exactly what we wanted. The equipment and pool cover are the highest quality. A week ago I notified them that the remote controller on the side of the hot tub wasn't working. It was repaired a week later.
