Hunter College High School is a public academic magnet secondary school located in the Carnegie…read moreHill Upper East Side of Manhattan. That's my neighborhood. It is administered and funded by Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY) and no tuition is charged. According to Hunter, its 1,200 "students represent the top one-quarter of 1% of students in New York City, based on test scores. I know that's true because I've got a lot of friends that have children that applied for entrance and were overlooked. The school history is interesting. Originally Hunter was established in 1869 as "The Female Normal and High School", a private school to prepare young women to become teachers. The original school was composed of an elementary and a high school. There's a long list of notable graduates if you want to look them up. I love the building because it is a historic Armory. I recommend you visit the photogenic structure. If you are fortunate enough to have your family member attend I recommend you take advantage of every activity and opportunity you have to visit this school. I particularly recommend participating in their extracurricular activities in any form offered. I've enjoyed a few activities throughout the years.

Last time I looked, my 9th grade math teacher was still soldiering on slinging the equations and one of my classmates is now continuing the tradition as a social studies teacher, following in the footsteps of Mr. Marienhoff (a great teacher and influence on many of us). Here are some facts about the school not often known outside the Hunter community. Every year, if you take the top 10% of 6th Grade kids in NYC (~2200-2500) that scored well on the 5th grade NYS ELA & math exams (what used to be called the city-wides), gave them the entrance exam and took the top 10% of those, you'd end up with the top 1%, which is roughly, a typical Hunter 7th grade class. Remember that this happens a full 2 years before they would take the Specialized High Schools exam (SHSAT). This gives Hunter the advantage of reaping the cream of the crop long before Stuyvesant, Bronx Science or Brooklyn Tech can get a crack at them. Over the first couple of years, some students will have personal, disciplinary or academic problems and will leave or be asked to leave, but their places are not filled by new students because they can only enter at the beginning of 7th grade. Those asked to leave go back and excel at their neighborhood schools. Like the other NYC specialized high schools, the education is tuition free and the best that the city can offer. Unlike those schools, you'll be staying for 6 years from grades 7-12. The Hunter College Campus Schools (including the Elementary School) is administered by Hunter College (CUNY) and not the NYC Dept of Education. This raises a whole load of other issues because Hunter is not subject to the Chancellor of the DOE nor receives funding like other NYC schools. Starting in 7th grade also gives students at Hunter the opportunity to finish their NYS Regents requirements by 10th or 11th grade and allows them to take more AP courses and to do an internship in their senior year. Completing both programs, the graduate receives both the Hunter and Regents diplomas. There has been a lot of press and allegations lately about the lack of diversity at Hunter and other Specialized schools that are groundless. If you can pass the test, you get in, end of story. Whether you received outside test prep or not, the bottom line is you were either prepared or not, no matter what your ethnic background. You better believe that if you attend Hunter, you will be going to college. With the Hunter name on your diploma, you stand a better than average chance to get into a top tier college or university. Hunter is known as the top feeder to the Ivy League and that is not a hollow statistic, but is proven every year. Among my class of 200, 10 students went to Cornell alone, with 4 to Harvard and others to Columbia, Princeton, UPenn, Yale, Brown and Dartmouth. We even had 3 going to MIT. Those are big percentages that is repeated year after year and that you will not find in any other school. I have very fond memories of my alma mater and appreciation for the place grows as you get older. So what I say to all the recent students and graduates that gripe about their experience at Hunter is that you'll be thankful for it in 10-20 years when all the bad experiences are in the past and you remember all the good things such as your life-long friends and the stellar education that you carry with you for the rest of your life. Our 2 kids went to Blue Rock during 7th & 8th grades. We have a strong appreciation of the importance of the Blue Rock experience. Public schools have such an emphasis on grades and testing, which creates so much stress and anxiety associated with learning. Blue Rock builds a love for learning.

My child had a medical emergency while at the school and it was unclear how it was actually handled. We received different accounts from the director, area manager, the staff member who accompanied my child to the hospital, and the EMT's who responded to the event. When I asked to see the footage from the time period of the medical emergency I was denied the request. 2. Classes are often combined in the morning or after 4pm, even during disease outbreaks in those respective rooms. Many times I would pick up my child and my child would be in the room where there is a known presence of Croup or Hand Foot Mouth playing with the children from that room. This, to me, demonstrated a lack of genuine care for the well being of the children. 4. My child's teacher recorded and posted a video on the app of another child pushing and kicking my child. My child was kicked 4 or more times and there was no intervention by the teacher. When I addressed this with the director I was simply told this was normal behavior for the age group and if the teacher had deemed to to be excessive she would have addressed it. 5.While regular handwashing is talked about quite a bit during the tour, it was not happening. Many times I picked up my child either right after playtime/before a snack or meal time or during a diaper change and the children were never made to wash their hands. I addressed this observation once with the director and noticed no improvements. 6. My child came home twice with scratches on her body that the staff could never explain. One scratch spanned across her back. 7. My child came home many times with diaper rash, despite us providing 40% zinc oxide diaper cream. On one occasion, I picked my child up and was told that all 3 of the kids left in the room had diaper rash. I don't think it is a coincidence that the last 3 kids left in the room that day all had diaper rash.

I am very relieved that my daughter is no longer attending. The highlight of our experience was a few of the lead teachers and teacher assistants who genuinely cared about the children. I truly appreciate their dedication. I also want to recognize Sajida, who was always welcoming and kind. Unfortunately, that level of care did not feel consistent throughout the school. In my experience, the center director Ms Set was difficult to communicate with. There were times when I felt my concerns were not taken seriously, which left me feeling unheard. My daughter also shared that she sometimes felt certain staff members were overly harsh with her. I was also concerned by incidents involving children pushing or shoving one another, and I did not always feel those situations were addressed as thoroughly as I expected. The classrooms themselves were cared for by the teachers, who I often saw wiping tables and mopping floors. However, the overall building did not appear to be maintained to the same standard. During my visits, I noticed dust buildup around the air vents and felt the facility could benefit from more thorough routine cleaning and maintenance. Given how easily illnesses spread among young children, this was disappointing. Another concern was the frequent staff turnover. It seemed like there were constantly new faces, making it difficult to feel there was consistency in my child's care. At times, some classrooms also appeared to be led by very young staff members, which made me question the level of experience available. Finally, I attended the recent graduation ceremony and personally felt the Hollywood theme was NOT the best choice for an early childhood celebration. A bit inappropriate if you ask me. Overall, this center was not the right fit for our family. For the tuition being charged, I believe there are cleaner, more modern centers with stronger communication and greater consistency. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this daycare.
