I had checked Yelp last evening for restaurant recommendations here in Onawa where we're camping…read morefor two days on our trek back east, and didn't see any standouts. However, "Frannies", a breakfast/lunch place had good reviews. Easy to find. Plenty of parking on this charming Iowa Main Street. Interior was light, airy, and clean. Plenty of seating. The service was immediate and cheerful. Coffee was excellent. I ordered the "Breakfast Feast" - country fried steak, hash browns (or fries), two eggs to order (scrambled), and a grilled muffin (back East we call it an "English Muffin." All covered in a light pepper gravy. Everything was done to perfection. The hash browns were crispy, the steak was also crispy yet tender. Often times, a gravy can be "flour-y" or too much pepper but this was perfect. Grilled muffins were crispy and buttery. The portion was large, and I couldn't finish, but I didn't bring it home to microwave later: it would have been mush and I wanted to remember it just as it had been in all of its tasty glory. My wife had French toast and sausage (she has more resistance than I), and it was reportedly excellent as well. Prices were very reasonable. We tipped 30% on the total.

Evidently no teamwork with staff. My coworker and I sat ourselves at a table. A very large group…read morewas being served their lunch, so we waited patiently as the waitresses served them. But it then became obvious we were invisible and no one even offered us a glass of water. After waiting over 10+ minutes, 3 men walked in the door, sat down and within a couple minutes they were given menus and ordering drinks. We got up and left. So Frannies does not welcome everybody.

Didn't even know this little place existed!…read more It's connected to the Rustic Treasures thrift store. The thrift items 'spill' into the coffee shop area as well. There's window bar seating and a nice, big table to sit at. Looks like specialty flavors change but there's a staple menu. Hot/cold coffee, tea, smoothies, hot chocolate, and pastries. Today I got a Sticky Bun latte. It was super yummy. Had a great brown sugar taste. (And of course I got whipped cream.) Prices are the same you'd expect at any coffee shop. I believe my Mom got a White Girl latte. She enjoyed hers as well. I'll for sure stop in and grab another next time I'm in town!

The Coffee Shoppe just re-opened on Memorial Day under new management. Under the new direction,…read morethey have updated the furniture and the floors, opting for wood floors rather than the carpet that was previously there. They also added counters that look out onto the sidewalk in front of the shop from tall chairs. There's also a greater integration of social media use (specifically Facebook), and the Coffee Shoppe melds very well with the adjoining thrift shop, Rustic Treasures. I've gone to the Coffee Shoppe three times since the re-opening, and the chocolate chocolate muffin paired with the Antigua drip coffee has been absolutely divine. It's been rather crowded during the lunch hour, but the staff seems to keep up well as new orders roll in.
