Every now and then even the best fall. Normally I give this store 4 or 5 stars but today it's a 2 star day. I visited Hayek's at about 12:30 which is normal for my lunch time and I ordered a roast beef and turkey sub. I was charged 15.00 plus tax which is normal. I picked up a few additional items as well. When I unwrapped my sandwich I was so disappointed with what I discovered. I've never had a sandwich this thin from Hayek's before and I've been shopping here for over 25 years. I will still shop there but I may be done with sandwich's. I'll include a picture of what 15.00 gets you these days. Disappointed is the best way to describe my experience today. There was tomato on the sandwich as well. Take that away and the meat could not be seen. read more

I purchased dog treats from Hayek's yesterday. I got them home and they were moldy and disgusting. I met with the manager Dan this morning who offered me a refund. While speaking with him, I brought up the fact that a flashing light in Hayek's triggered a seizure in me recently. He explained that he has to hire someone offsite to change the lights, and that cost's money and he's never heard of a flashing light triggering a seizure in anyone before. I had a medical incident in the store, which was just dismissed by a manager completely. I still came back to the store to purchase dog treats and they were disgusting. The manager disregarded any of my concerns and I am extremely upset. I used to love this store. I will never recommend it to anyone again. read more

For starters you have deli employees eating macaroni and cheese straight out of the hot case with a plastic spoon like its there personal dish (Disgusting). I went in for an Italian sub and had one made fresh at the deli with pepperoni on it. He handed me the sub with a price tag of $15.99. The subs in the grab and go are $8.99. (I planned on taking one of each) When I questioned it I was told the same length of bread was twice the size. The subs are the same size and wheight. (I held them side by side they were the sam) I asked for a manager or owner and was treated like it was an inconvenience. The owner was outside at the loading dock, I had to go outside to talk to him (he couldn't be bothered to come in to talk to me) who acted as I was below him and disturbing his conversation. When I questioned the subs was told they are twice the size as grab and go and price is non negotiable at which point he walked away and back to his conversation with the delivery guy. I watched the sub get made 3 slice provolone 4 slice ham 4 slice of salami and at my request maybe 4 slice pepperoni. Maybe 8oz of product total. NOT TWICE THE SIZE... STAY AWAY UNLESS YOU LIKE TO OVER PAY OR BE LOOKED AND TALKED DOWN TO AS IF YOU ARE NOBODY.... I have been in the culinary business and world my whole life I have a degree... This guy needs to get a tape measure and learn how to scale food properly. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS ESTABLISHMENT NOR WILL I EVER PURCHASE FROM THEM AGAIN. JUST RUDE AND DEMEANING.. read more

One of the best things about this market is that you receive such service!! Everybody that works here is so professional and kind really reminds me of living here a long time ago! If I have a question about rolls or their specials, the employees are eager to answer and very involved in their specialty. This is my go-to-place when I don't feel like cooking dinner. They have different dinners during the week that you can pick up and pre-order early in the day. You can get a copy of the monthly calendar of their dinners right as you're checking out. One of my favorites is their turkey dinner with all the delicious sides and fixings. I also like stopping by here for a lunch sandwich from their deli. They make the most amazing BLT sandwiches. And not be left out, their desserts! They have their own homemade pies, which are delicious. I prefer their apple pie. I also have a sweet tooth for their divine carrot cake slices. I called in my order 5 min before for a THEC to go made second call 3 minutes out and added a hash brown to the sandwich When I arrived it was done wrapped w my name on it. They had kept it hot too. My wife can state one hundred percent I spend too much time at this market. Amazing products and pre marinated sides and main entrees. The employees and butchers are extremely nice. The second you browse the butcher section, there is an amazing helpful man asking if you need any help. I've personally asked questions for slow cooking pork and they have provided me with exactly what I was looking for but larger from the back. I spend way too much money there and my wife and I have not had an ounce of regret. Every staff member I've Interacted with has been an amazing experience. They are very nice and very helpful. Hayek's can definitely be hit or miss, but overall my husband and I frequent this store and are usually happy with what we get. We love their hamburger patties and definitely think their burgers are the best in the area. Some of their pre-packaged foods like the stromboli, buffalo chicken stuffed bread, meatloaf, corned beef are really good while others are just okay (there was a pesto pasta dish my husband had once and didn't like at all). I'm not the biggest fan of the pre packaged sandwiches as well. I love that they carry Cliff's ice cream and go to their ice cream stand a lot during the summer. Their soft serve is my favorite! Like I said, the pre-packaged food can be hit or miss but once you find your favorites I don't think this is really an issue! read more

Really confusing to as a first time customer walking in for breakfast and lunch. I stood in one spot waiting for someone to ask me if I needed help but everyone just walks around behind the counter looking at you but not saying anything. First time I walked in I walked back out after standing for 3 minutes waiting for help. Second time I walked in immediately I was asked for help by a woman who was so kind and explained how things worked and made me a breakfast bagel which was really good. Third time I go for lunch and again everyone is looking at me but doesn't say a word. Meanwhile I'm the only one at the counter. Then finally a woman asks me if I took a number and said no I didn't know I had to and she said because of the lunch rush you have to take a number. I totally get that, but there was no one standing in line. People didn't come in until after I place my order. She made my Philly cheesesteak. Let me tell you this was the worst Philly cheesesteak I ever had. The meat wasn't seasoned at all, and the cheese was the melted cheese that you would get with nachos and cheese at a movie theater. The peppers and onions were also unseasoned and tasted like water. My sandwich with sad from now on I will refer to it as the Phillies sad steak. read more

This place is a culinary delight...a destination! I have to give them, not 5 stars, but twice that, for the job they are doing. They serve Panini's on a Focaccia bread that, out of the oven, is the best rosemary focaccia I have ever had! Their meals to go look fantastic...their bakery dept. and dessert selections, wow! In today's day & age where stores seem so generic and 'been there done that', this place is absolutely a go-to destination. I'm out in Newton on business about once per week (used to be more) and frequent Hayek's when here--but I'm never thrilled really. Everything looks and sounds better than it ever ends up being. Part of the problem is I always end up going with the pre-made stuff since I'm rushed for time (and deli line long at lunch). Today I got a Turkey with Meunster on a hard roll. Awful. Roll soaking wet on one side, rock hard on the other. The pre-packaged sandwiches and wraps always seem "wet" yet i'm a sucker for the quick move. today also got a black bean soup...not awful but too spicy. We have always had a good experience with Hayek's but we were having guests over for Thanksgiving dinner and thought we would buy a fresh kill turkey weighing 15 pounds. However considering we were allowed a free frozen turkey from ShopRite the frozen turkey couldn't have been as bad as this Hayek turkey turned out! We did prepare as we usually do and cooked accordingly following times on the bird! Basting it thoroughly during the cooking process. It was VERY GAMIE and the skin looked golden but was the worst turkey we ever cooked. Of course Hayek did not raise the bird but they sold us the bird! We paid $60 dollars for a fowl turkey! I would NEVER buy a Hayek turkey again!! My rating is on the turkey not on the store! My wife is an EXCELLENT cook , she is very upset with the outcome of this bird! The place we headed to that stated they were open, was actually closed. Even though the door was open, the guy said closed. So I had seen the Hayek Market as we had driven by and people walking in and out. It had good reviews and mind you it was a Sunday in a small town and we needed a decent lunch before a early evening wedding. Wow! What a clean lovely market! And the Deli, looked amazing! The salads all looked so tempting, I did get a small potato salad because it was calling my name! Also another wonderful surprise was the two sizes on sandwiches, 2oz. or 5oz. of meat. Totally makes sense, sometimes we just don't need a "Fred Flintstone" size sammie! My sammie was made to order delicious and just how I like it. The clerks were friendly and so helpful. Even the hot food selections looked wonderful too. What a great find. We took a quick walk around the market and it was well stocked and had many specialty items. I really wanted to like this place and help a small business out. My mother asked the man behind the meat counter if she could order chicken cutlets pounded. It seemed like a butcher. A reasonable, "the meat is prepackaged." Would have been a suffice response. Instead the man behind the counter snapped at her and told her to look down it was right in front of her "help ya self" and walked away shaking his head. Went in for surgery yesterday at nearby Newton Hospital, couldn't eat or drink for 12+ hours. All I wanted was a Hayek sandwich when I came out of recovery. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!!"
