I sorta screwed myself when buying lumber here, but I won't be buying here again. I purchased three 10 ft boards of 1x8 S4S walnut, cherry, and maple. I asked how much for all three boards and they quoted me $41. 61. I'm new to buying wood so I figured that was a normal price. I didn't check the receipt after I'd paid (my fault) and I went home happy and excited to make stuff. It wasn't until a few days later that I found my receipt and saw they'd charged me $416.14 for three boards. These prices are far above the national average for wood and they don't post prices at the rack. Had I bought these boards anywhere else I would have paid far less. An example, I paid $21.60 a linear foot for the walnut. That's about $32.40 a board foot. S2S online is $14.99 a board foot. I paid more than double to have two extra sides surfaces and sanded. My whole purchase should have costed less than $200. I can't speak for the rest of their merchandise, but if you're buying hardwood don't go here. Update: Brisco True Value in AG charges $11.99 a bd ft for walnut, $6.15 for maple, and $7.59 for cherry. My purchase there would have been approximately $171.53 before taxes and fees for the amount I purchased. I will be shopping there from now on. read more

I needed some picture rail to complete some projects in my house. I really like it because I can re hang pictures easily without more holes in the wall. the used to stock it in San Luis Hayward but they don't anymore. So I was out of luck. So I called Santa Maria and sure enough they had it in stock and a lot of it so I could buy it cool. but that's a long ways away from Atascadero and I don't have a truck. Luckily I got hold of the GM down there and Darrell was very helpful. He not only would sell me what I needed, but he would put it on their truck and take it to San Luis so it'd be so much easier for me to pick it up. This is very cool. That's Saved Me 2 hours of driving and having to locate a truck to drive a long distance. Now couple that with a local friend who brought it from San Luis to my house and basically with just one or two phone calls I got free delivery and everything. I am most happy that Darrell was able to solve the problem and was very congenial about it and wow the price even dropped when I bought everything he had in stock. So hey this is the place. Walked in, store COMPLETELY empty save one lady being helped by one guy in the back. Three people sitting behind desk/counter on their computers - they looked up yet NO ONE said ANYTHING...no hello, can we help you, NOTHING. We just kind of wandered around out back, then came back up & asked where the baseboards were. One guy behind the counter looked up and sort of vaguely pointed to the back and said, "Back in that corner." After wandering some more, and realizing that no one was interested in helping us, we left. LAZY and unprofessional - you should be ashamed. Ended up spending $200 at Home Depot. Probably saved money and had a better experience. read more

I have no complaints about service, stock, cleanliness, or anything else in general. However, I think it's worth mentioning that you should beware of having employees rip plywood for you. Here's why: I had several sheets cut into roughly thirds. I immediately noticed that the employee was feeding the wood through the panel saw from left to right. Hmm. That's backwards from most panel saws, and I questioned him about it. He said that's how he had been taught. Once home, I immediately noticed that all long edges were chewed up, not cleanly cut, wavy. And I'm not talking about normal tear-out that happens when you cut plywood. I know the difference! I called to report it, not angry, not demanding money back. In fact, I very calmly suggested they look into the problem before another customer gets angry. When I went back today to get one more sheet, the woman to whom I talked said she was told that they can only guarantee "rough cuts," so there's no need to look into it. What???? Seriously?? Clearly that person has no idea that "rough cut" doesn't mean that the cut is literally rough! It means that you'll get roughly - approximately - the size you want. Is any saw supposed to make ugly, rough cuts??? Sheesh! So if you want your plywood to be cut cleanly to roughly the size you need... don't go to Hayward! read more
