Nothing worse then being 1100 miles from home and needing a doctor for your child…read more Before leaving for our trip, Kiddo was diagnosed with an ear abscess followed by being put on antibiotic ear drops by our Austin pediatrician. Our first night in Virginia and Kiddo woke up with a bloody ear. Ugg. Before panic set in and I logged in to Yelp for some guidance..... nothing.......crickets. A few deep breaths and I logged on to our insurance's website for doctors in our visiting area and luckily found Dr. Peltzer. To my relief, they fit us in the same afternoon. Once we arrived, we were met by cordial office staff and a waiting room full of people. I did the quick math in my head (1 doctor X 10 people = a super long wait). Still feeling so grateful to them for fitting us in the same day, I tolerantly took a seat and waited. We waited and waited; way past my internal clock's waiting time limit. Thank goodness for the iPad to keep Kiddo busy because we had also skipped nap. The good news is that they have free wi-fi, so once we were in the exam room, we got to do some face timing. Dr. Peltzer came in and was so sweet and gentle. She listened to the backstory and quickly got to the exam. Kiddo did so awesome and this was mainly due to Dr. Peltzer's ease, explanation and gentle touch. She is really great with kids. Not only that but also seemed very in tune and connected with the assistant and office staff. Kiddo walked out of there unafraid of the ear doctor and never cried once during the ear suction or exam. That says a lot. The only reason for the docked star is for the extremely long wait.

Giving this practice an "OK" rating is generous. My experience has been that an MD could not…read moreeffectively remove excessive ear wax without causing pain. The doctor complained that my "ear canal is very narrow". How is that my fault? At one point I was so desparate that I agreed to his suggestion of having the ear wax removal performed while I was under anesthesia in the OR?! Even if Medicare paid for that, the out-of-pocket would have been significant, and for what---ear wax removal? Obviously, I decided against this solution. To put this experience in perspective: A Physician's Assistant at another ENT practice (different market, outside the Ballad Health jurisdiction) had no problem whatsoever in cleaning my ears--causing 0 pain or discomfort. Did she have special tools or other equipment? Or did she use heat or other processes differently to soften the wax more effectively to allow its safe and painless removal? Even if the answer is "Yes" to both questions, those tools and processes should have been known and available to be used effectively in ANY reputable ENT practice.
