Hands down one of the most pleasant experiences I've ever had with a service provider. When you book with Sam, you're paying for two things. 1) His pure talent and skill for shooting and editing. 2) Comfort and confidence This was my first time booking a photography session and knowing this Sam took 5 whole hours making sure I got the experience I paid for. During shooting, I felt so comfortable smiling in front of lights and a camera (I never smile), and it was all because of Sam's guidance on position and posing along with encouragement. After we got the shots he sat down with me and did photoshop magic before my own eyes. He's so incredibly talented at what he does, I think we spent more time talking than shooting. It took me a while to find someone available to take basic headshots for work on a Saturday- must have called at least 10 places. Sam was willing to accommodate a Saturday appointment. Had to get a professionally taken photo for my job. Would rather get a shot in the arm, if given the choice. Didn't get that choice, so I went to Sam Khan instead. Let me tell you... I'm stingy with my compliments, but I can't stop raving about Sam. His studio is just past 7th, on the 4th floor, and is the last door down a dingy hallway. Sam was the consummate professional, easy-going and unassuming. I brought examples of photos to show him what I liked, but he took over from the get-go. He took the time to explain what he wanted, provided examples of his work, explained his Photo Shop editing techniques, and his photographic style. So this was my first ever attempt at getting headshots. Sam was awesome for a number of reasons. I was nervous because I've never been photographed this way. I mean like where it's all about you and nothing else. It's nerve-racking! LOL! Sam made me comfortable right away. He was super flexible on the kind of package he could deliver for my budget. He advised me well on what articles of clothing to bring. He allotted enough time for me to not feel rushed, at all. He took time to speak with me and get an understanding of what I needed so that he could really provide it. I learned so much about headshots. Sam is confident but not arrogant. Flexible but no pushover; he knows what he's doing and definitely maintains control of the shoot. At all times I felt a sense that he really cared about me feeling confident that I'd walk away satisfied with the end result. He never once projected a "just trust me" vibe. Sam showed me some images as he took each batch and we discussed their potential, or lack thereof, as we went along and quickly changed direction as needed. There are moments of kindness that stick with you forever. A few days ago I had to get some pictures developed and didn't know how quite to get this done since these days like most folks; I post most of my pictures on-line. So I make my way to the Thornton Studio on 25th street between 6th and 7th avenues to find a completely unhelpful staff. I was sent to this person and that person to eventually get cutoff in mid conversation when I tried to suggest the logical, since I didn't burn them on a CD or have them on a USB, which was to email the pictures so that they could print them out for me. After all, they were only 5 pictures. The little, pudgy woman dismissed me without looking up and told me that she couldn't help me unless I had them on a CD of USB. So I walked out the door, a bit annoyed and made my way over to CVS to get a CD or somethin'. Before I entered I Yelp'd a photography place to see if I could get this picture printing fiasco done. I call the first number on the list; get an answering machine, call the second and a guy picks up, his name is Sam. I explain to him in sort of a desperate tone that I had to get this done, that my mom has been bugging me for months to have them printed. Sam is a professional photographer, it's simply something he doesn't do, but decided to help me anyway. First thing out of his mouth when he agreed was to have me email him the pictures, simple, just as I thought. He asked come over to his Studio on 29th street, awesome, I was only a few blocks away and as it happened it was also near my Gym where I was heading in any case. So I get to the building, up the elevator, knock on the door and Sam opens up. The guy was as welcoming as he sounded on the phone. It's an awesome space, a professional space for professional photographs. I sit down; send him the pictures and he starts to effortlessly plug away on a program on his PC to brush up the pictures and make them perfect for printing. He talked to me like he knew me for years. He asked me to come back in an hour and that by that time; they'd be ready to pick up in an envelope. I left and came back, sat down for a bit more, he showed me the pictures, which were awesome, I paid him a very reasonable amount and I was off. My point of this long ass story is that Sam is an awesome human being. He went out of his way for a person who he didn't even know. This is the kind of person who wont let you down, who is honest and decent and on top the utmost professional. I'll recommend this brother for the rest of my days. read more

Sam is the best there is. I've been working with him for years. Even when I was an actor in DC I would travel to New York to have him take my pictures. Unlike other photographers who give you a certain number of shots, or a limited amount of time, Sam will spend whatever amount of time is needed to get the right shots. The first time we met he even took me out shopping because he thought we could find some better options for shirts! I've never used another photographer since then! I go to Sam for everything having to do with pictures - headshots, prints, retouching, postcards - he does it all. I always know it's going to be a quality product at a good price. I found this company on Yelp, and after seeing three 5-star reviews, I decided I would go to him. I was in a rush to get some very professional headshots taken for a variety of uses - a company press kit, our website, online media sources, etc. Simply put, they needed to look very professional. The photographer was extremely nice, and wouldnt stop taking shots until he and I both liked the images. He was SO flexible, didnt rush me at all, and spent all the time he needed to get the PERFECT shot for each look. He has such a good eye for great photos, and he's taken photos for a lot of high profile people (...didnt know this until I got there). Sam is a consummate professional and a master of his craft. I've gotten my headshot/body shots done with him a few times now and it's easy for me to say they come out perfect. Everything the others said and more. Reasonable rates, great location, great service, beautiful outcome. Got professional headshots for a business website. It was my first time doing this, so understand my opinion is within that limited context. Sam was easy to negotiate with, make an appointment with, and communicate with in terms of what we were looking for in our photos. He explained how everything would go on the phone, and everything did go just like he said it would. Once there, we first discussed sample websites and sample photos I hoped to mimic, and he was receptive and ultimately delivered what we asked for exactly. We brought our own hair and makeup people, and there was plenty of space to set up, change, hang clothes, primp. Big studio with several rooms and tons of light. Sam is direct and encouraging. He knows enough about fashion and color to help make correct clothing and makeup choices. He will snap a thousand photos until he gets the right shot. He will tell you when it doesn't look good, and when it does. He will allow you to participate in the process, showing you the shots along the way on the camera so you can understand what he means when he says, "look down, turn left, arms back." He seems to like his job. Choosing the photo and choosing the editing happens on the spot, on Sam's giant computer screen. Its all very technological and impressive; he has spent the money on the software. We left invigorated to market our business. This is the place to go if you want great photos for a reasonable price with someone who truly understands the craft and understands what makes for a great photo. Sam is always looking to get the best shots he can out of the shoot, he never "calls it in" and he has fantastic attention to every detail, from the lighting, the backdrop, to the expression, etc. I did a straight linkedin headshot with him which came out great, and then I had a complicated artist shoot with four different looks. Sam cares about getting you great photos and will spend the time with you to get them. I can't stress that point enough - he is truly committed to get the best shots of you possible and will spend the time with you to make sure that happens.
