EDIT - Since posting this review my assailant, Jack, tried to contact me, asking me to speak to him on the phone, as if I am going to have a dialog with him after what he did. Then I received a message from Yelp about "complaints" about my review, and warning me I could potentially be sued. To that I say: if what I said is untrue, then sue me. I encourage and welcome such a trial. I doubt I will have trouble finding other victims of your actions. I stand by my statement and I will gladly defend it civil court. ------------ I have been reluctant to leave this review because I have a pending dispute on my bank card against the establishment, and because the entire experience was so humiliating and upsetting. I also wonder if I'm somehow at fault or did something wrong because everyone else seems to have had great experiences and mentions by name the person who wronged me, but I know in my heart if I don't leave this review and speak the truth of my experience it will haunt me. I came here because it seemed to me like a legitimate storefront massage spa. It's located on South Street right out in the open, among many other legitimate businesses. I had seen an offer on an app for a $50 ($10 off normal) hour massage for first time visitors. I came in early evening. The man who greeted me I now know to be Jack, the owner of the establishment as well as a masseur. I asked him if he was available because I feel more comfortable with a man doing my massage, and he said yes. After a short wait we went back to begin, and I undressed and laid on my stomach. He draped me with a sheet and began the massage. I laid with my arms up around my head rather than at my sides, because this is how I feel most comfortable. Within the first ten minutes of the massage, Jack's crotch was frequently making contact with my hands. He would lean into them as he worked. I chalked this up to the fact that he is somewhat short, and figured it was probably incidental. I kept moving my hands around, but somehow his genitals kept making contact with them, and at a certain point it became clear that he was getting an erection. I became somewhat paralyzed at this, which is a very normal response for someone who is being assaulted, which is exactly what was happening to me. Jack continued the massage, ultimately removing the entire sheet and leaving me completely uncovered. It was an adequate massage but at a certain point he focused extensively on my buttocks and seemed to be moving his fingers lightly over what one would call the space in-between. I kept clenching and turning slightly because I feared he was going to try and penetrate me with a finger. At a certain point he told me to roll over so he could "do the front" and I complied. I realize I am making myself very vulnerable to criticism and attack by being this honest; all I can express to you is that when it's happening to you, you just freeze up and try to wait until it's over. Jack put a rolled up wash cloth over my eyes like a blindfold, and then did "the front". I can only assume it was still Jack at this point, to be honest, because my eyes were completely covered. This massage consisted of what seemed somewhat legit, excepting I was not covered or draped in any fashion, until it became clear that the hands touching me were basically 'grazing' my genitals repeatedly. I was never fully grabbed there, but I think that's probably because I did not get an erection; it was VERY clear I was expected to respond that way, but in fact I was just tensed up in horror for the duration. Once this was all over Jack said "Ok all done" and took off like a bat out of Hell. In a stupor I stood up and got dressed, and wandered out in a daze. Jack ran my card and I signed for it, and then he had the audacity to look me in the face and say "Most people tip twenty percent." I walked out and wandered into a coffee shop where I sat in abject shock over what had just gone down. I have filed a complaint with the massage licensing board, and as I mentioned, I have filed a dispute with my bank; it turns out I was in there for 90 minutes, so Jack just extended my appointment without my realizing, and charged me $90. In addition to assaulting me. There's really nothing more to say. It's been over a week and I'm still kind of flabbergasted. I have no objection to sex work, but I don't think the line should be blurred between that and legitimate massage therapy. I can't speak to other peoples' experiences here, but I cannot imagine I am the only person who has received this unexpected 'extra' treatment. read more

I have had many a reflexology massage and I usually indulge in one when traveling to a new city. With all the positive reviews I was expecting something on par with New York's Chinatown massages. Unfortunately I did not have the best experience. They are open the majority of the day including evening hours and luckily we (my husband and I) walked in on a Sunday night around 7pm without an appointment. I asked if they have any kind of back/foot combo deals but was only answered with the question "how long do you want?" So we ended up going with foot only for 30 minutes. The foot massage area isn't comfy or cozy but rather two office-style chairs right there where people walk in. They do not have a receptionist so they will also stop mid-massage to check out another customer or answer the phone. I did not see any sort of hand washing happen between going from money to feet. They did not towel wash our feet before rubbing down with petroleum jelly. The massage itself also sucked. It was by far the most gentle/lightest/lamest foot rub that I have ever had. Perhaps I just didn't have one of their best staff... my husband who was next to me enjoyed his massage and I could visually tell his therapist was really getting in there. I am used to feeling muscles in my feet I didn't even know I had while getting reflexology! $30 for 30 minutes was also pretty steep! read more

I got a 90min massage with Jack and it was the best massage I've gotten in a very long time. I've visited multiple parlors in both Philly and South Jersey and no one compares. He has true healing hands - he knows the perfect amount of pressure to use and adjusts to each body part. He asks what you'd like to focus on and he's excellent at focusing on your sore spots but is still attentive to the full body. Although I told him to focus on my upper back and neck, I didn't specify that my Left side is always more tight than my Right and he naturally spent more time on my Left - this speaks on his natural gift. I have been going to Jack for medical massage for five years or so. He is a real master of acupressure and qi massage, which he weaves into his regular massage so significant injuries (bone breaks, spine issues etc) are skillfully and knowledgeably handled. He once described his 6 year training to me, intensive and at a very elite training school. He's a rare find, what you will get is amazing and healing. Even though he is very understated, don't be fooled - he has the skill and a gift for therapeautic body work. All the other therapists he brings in have a high level of training too. read more

Very happy I have discovered this place. All my life I need to go regularly to get my back muscles unblocked. And since I moved to Philly 2 years ago and my friend suggested I would go and see this place, I adopted this place. To tell the true, I tried ALL the other 1 min/1$ places along South street, hoping that will find one closer my home, however, I came back to Healing Hands and since never left them. Jack, Cindy and Tina, they are all very good and intuitive. Sometimes they ask what zones I would like to focus on, sometimes they just take initiative, and I always leave relaxed. Deep tissue, you can choose chair or separate room massage. I like stronger massages as my muscles tend to contract a lot, and that's what I get. However, if you like a softer massage techniques, all 3 of them always ask if the pressure is fine for you. I am very happy I have discovered this place and going there for the last 2 years at least once a month and I do not intend to abandon it!!! read more

I've found healing hands via yelp and thought I'd give it a try just to pamper myself.. at around 9pm on a Tuesday. I read about Jack but he wasn't in that night, so the lady working in there massaged me. I was very happy with it!! Another day I had decided to go back there after I was fighting severe pain in the neck/shoulder area for several weeks. This time I made an appointment with Jack because I had read so good about him. It was painful!! It was like he knew exactly where the pain was and went straight for it I wanted to cry almost the whole session long. The next hours I felt sore, even more the next day. However, once I got over the soreness I felt great. So it was all worth it in the end. My husband had a stiff neck and I told him to see Jack this morning. He said Jack got him right again, and that he's only going to him from now on. All in all, I recommend healing hands. Jack and the lady (I don't remember her name) both did a great job. We decided to drop-in after seeing the positive Yelp reviews and reviewing other, pricier massage parlors. This was well worth it. I got Jack and my husband had a female masseuse. We both got hour massages, and if you like hard pressure, therapeutic massage, then this one is for you. The only downside was that they don't have a front desk person, so anytime someone walked in (which happened 3 times), my massage stopped for a few seconds while he greeted a customer. This is legitametly one of the best massages I've had. I've been attending here and am a loyal customer for 2 years. If you like deep tissue everyone here is really excellent. I spend 8-10 hours a week at the gym training in muay thai. Every three weeks I go here and it sets my body straight. All the kinks, knots, aches and pain are massaged out and you feel refreshed. Jack, Liya, Cindy, Susan are who I've mostly received my massage from. They are all wonderful each having different styles of massage. Ultimately if you are searching for a hard, deep tissue, myofascia release they are amazing. read more

This is a great place for a no frills massage. I have never had a bad massage here and I have be a half dozen times at this point with all different people. So I'm used to the $15-20/hour massage places from LA, but really though the cheap price reflects the quality of service and therapy you get. This place is $60/hour, which is still affordable but definitely much more than what I'm used to. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much but I just needed some sort of work done on my shoulders from my workout the day before. I also work at a desk job, so it contributes more to my shoulder pain. This place turned out to be one of the best massage places I've ever been to. Private rooms, quiet and my masseuse had very strong hands (which I prefer). She definitely understood the anatomy of shoulder and back pain and worked on all my trouble spots. It's not a ghetto place like the typical Chinese massage parlors, which is a pretty nice change for me! Would recommend this place especially for anyone with shoulder and neck pain. read more

Staffed by Jack (who understands more English than he speaks and ALWAYS knows the source of your pains), and an ever-changing variety of Chinese women who usually speak no English but are well-trained. Muscle pain is universal and everyone who's ever kneaded me there has been very good to excellent. At times, there is no wait. Lately, I find, there is often a wait of 10 minutes or more, but it may depend on the time of day (or night). Reserving in advance MIGHT save you a wait; sometimes they honor it, sometimes they think they can squeeze in one more walk-in even if you arrive on time. That can be annoying since my husband and I try to coordinate a massage (20 minutes or so) prior to heading to my chiropractic adjustments as we get MUCH better adjustments if the tight muscles are loosened first. (Our chiro thinks he's gotten more skilled at adjusting us, but it's the massage prior.) However, even when I call to confirm that I am heading over (one block away) and ask if they are available, I arrive to find that they are not. I love that you can get any amount of time of excellent massage -- with Jack, it's more Chinese acupressure which may hurt a bit while he's doing it but it leaves you feeling like you can fly afterwards. So, it's worth a little wait, if you have to. There are 2 stations for chair massages in the front of this small, store-front on South Street, a small couch for waiting, and several tables in curtained, private spaces in the back. There is sometimes one person on staff, and sometimes up to 3. Cash is preferred (of course) but they take credit card (except the rare times it's down); but no American Express. A 10% tip is common for massage, but they seem not used to getting tips here -- which is a shame because they are worth it and I don't think they are getting a lot of what is taken in for the massages. Family or work stress weighing you down and impairing your mood or your health? Spend $20 for a heavenly, legit massage here and you will wonder why you don't do it every week. read more

He is extremely intuitive and has cultivated a real ability to hone in on the body's true source of discomfort- which in my case was not the place I first guessed it was....he was able to almost magically find it. I love this place. It's on my way home from the subway so it's easy to pop in after a long day and get a get an affordable massage. I think they take appointments but I have never made one and still never had to wait. The massages are amazing! I have had back problems all my life and the massages have really helped relieve the pain. The spa doesn't look fancy place but it is clean, the massage rooms are cozy, the people are friendly, and they do a great job.
