I have been coming to Phila massages for a few years now. I have worked with several massage therapists here who have all been knowledgeable and efficient and always know where my tight knots and areas of tension in my body are. The massages here are a combination of deep tissue massage, sports massage and stretching. I usually like more pressure and have found all the massage therapists will adjust the pressure based on your liking. In my opinion this is not a relaxing type of massage but more of an intense massage where you feel like you just ran 26 miles but after a few hours after the massage you definitely feel all loosened out. They offer a monthly membership or you can drop in. You can also select between whole body massage or target a specific area. I came in wanting a massage on my week off, and I was lucky enough to be paired with Joseph. He told me how tight and wound up my body was for not stretching and sitting in front of a computer all day, and proceeded to really try and flatten out the knots in my legs and back. He was very professional throughout the whole experience, and I appreciate the effort he put into eliminating the knots in my body (although there's definitely more work to do... there's only so much anyone can do in 60 minutes). It was painful but worth it - after the session, I noticed how much better my circulation was and how much lighter I felt after the work he did. He also gave me advice afterwards on how to keep the benefits of the session for longer by making sure I incorporate stretching and yoga in my workout routine. That might smack of hyperbole but he is a clearly a master of his craft, evident in his painstaking and thorough work. This is not your zen massage. There are no frou frou candles or your choice of scented massage oils. Instead, they are fairly bare rooms--and great sports/deep tissue massages. It may take some time to find the therapist whose technique works with what you want--but I've found a few that I love. Yes, it's a bit frustrating to have to wait outside, and to climb 4 flights of stairs. I've been a member for 6 months. It's definitely a huge cost savings if you go even more than 4 times a year of 60 minute massages. I give it three stars because of their great location, for making appointments easy to schedule via text messages, and the discount for first time clients. However, I also had to face a few negative sides. First, it would be much more convenient if you informed clients NOT TO COME MORE THAN 10 MINUTES BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT. No one will open the door for you. I arrived 20 minutes before the appointment, and I had to wait outside in the 90-degree weather and there are no seats downstairs. You should expect that some people are coming with pain or sometimes not being even able to take the stairs (I didn't see any elevators). You will only see a small sign downstairs that if you arrived earlier than 10 minutes before the appointment, then no one will open the door to you, because the massage therapist is still working with other clients. For such incidents Phila Massages should hire someone at the reception. My masseuse was Colleen Woytas. It was a very good massage, but since each person has different preferences, her technique is well suited to those who like continuous movements through the body and a relaxing massage. I went to get a deep tissue massage, I get them every two weeks so I do know what the deep tissue massage means. I have a incessant pain in the lower back, because of scoliosis. In addition to chiropractor and physiotherapy, I need massages every week. Due to the fact that the specialist to whom I drive is a half hour away from Philadelphia, and sitting in the car give my back an extra stress, so I decided to give it a try at Phila Massages, based on all the good reviews. We ended up starting about 15 minutes later due to the prior client running over. I really appreciated that Brianna made sure my session wasn't cut short but also stayed respectful of my time. She also helpfully explained what she noticed was going on in my body and talked out some solutions. She asked how the pressure was during the massage - which was perfect. I wanted something tough to work through my knots and specifically asked for that, which isn't to say she wouldn't accommodate a lighter touch. I can't say enough good things about my experience. I booked an appointment through their online system (which was pretty easy compared to some spas and massage therapy places) on a Friday for an appointment on a Monday night and they took me! I get a discount through Philadelphia Sports Network, so it only cost me $40 for an hour. I met with Natacha and talked to her about which muscles I have issues with and which activities I am involved in (volleyball and running). She listened well - I've never had a massage therapist massage my deltoid and other shoulder muscles so thoroughly, but it really helped. The actually offices were a bit awkward to find. It's inside Weston gym (which it says on their website), but if you go to the lobby of the building, the people at the security desk refused to acknowledge that it's its own business. I probably paid less than I would have for a "spa" massage elsewhere in the city, got a better product, and Natacha was kind enough to talk about what areas she thought I should stretch and work on at home after the massage. This place is geared towards athletes and is definitely more of a physical therapy-type massage as opposed to a spa massage, but you should definitely try it out even if you're not an athlete if you want a kickass deep tissue massage. I have awful tension and knots in my neck, shoulders, and upper back, exacerbated by my terrible posture and a job which involves sitting at a computer all day. Basically, I need a lot of pressure with my massages and I needed someone to beat the sh*t out of my muscles with a really intense deep tissue massage. I booked a 30 minute massage here for $50. Martin is very intuitive and was able to attack all my problem areas in my back/neck/shoulders. It was painful at times, but in a good and even relaxing way. He even incorporated stretching into the massage towards the end, which I'd never experienced before, but it worked. I seriously felt like a different person afterwards. My neck, shoulders, and upper back felt so much lighter, looser, and less tense. I was SO happy. Martin is such a gifted massage therapist! Phila Massages has a membership program that I would definitely join (you get discounts on the massages if you're a member) if I weren't moving so soon! Wish I could take this place with me. The morning got even better when the bus came, made it a few blocks and then broke down. So one bus, and one cab ride later and I finally get to Melvyn 15 minutes late. Even though I had kept him apprised of the situation via phone I figured he would subtract my tardiness from my appointment time, but he still managed to give me the full time! Even if it was a case of an open schedule, he didn't have to do this. It was another fantastic appointment, despite my stressful start. The only thing to note was that when I arrived it was only Melvyn and myself there (maybe there was someone in the back, but I didn't hear a thing). Another employee did arrive about halfway into my session, but by then I was already under the sheets. Again, this was not a problem at all during my session but I could see this being a point of hesitation for other female clients. I have found the holy grail. Wow. Brian is an absolute wizard. I have been on the hunt for a great massage for quite some time now (years) and my search has finally ended. This is by no means a place where you can expect soft music and candles and aromatherapy...it's actually more like physical therapy--deep (!) muscle work and exercises to make you feel like a million bucks. Brian fixed my shoulders to the point where I actually felt taller when I left. He let a heat lamp warm up my shoulder before he got to work, which helped tremendously. He was so incredibly meticulous and thorough--no knot left behind. Yesterday I get messages at least once every 2 months, my regular therapist at my regular place was not available. I found Phila Massage online and it is close to my office. I was able to get an appointment with Olivia. It was for a deep tissue massage and it was excellent. I've never fallen asleep during a deep tissue massage and for some reason, I feel asleep because it was so good that it put me in a trance. I decided I finally wanted to get a massage after running the Broad Street Run yesterday. I've always wanted to get one but was too uneasy about getting undressed and not enjoying spa-like atmospheres in general. I searched on yelp for massage and out of the handful of places rated highly that were within two miles of my house, I picked PhilaMassages. I liked that you could make an appointment online (I hate making phone calls). The whole thing was great. The office is clean and bright without a polished stone or fountain or zen anything in sight. Like a cheerful doctor's office. A plus for me. My appointment was with Karen and she met me at the desk. I filled out a short intake form and she sat with me for a few minutes and explained to me what to expect which was very reassuring. She showed me into a spare, clean room and very carefully explained how to get under the sheet and told me it was up to me what to leave on or take off. I didn't feel embarrassed or strange. Once I got settled, she came in and explained where she'd start and then she got to it. It was fabulous. It's sports massage so she spent time on the muscles that were tight - it hurt to have them massaged, but in a pleasant way. 45 minutes later I was completely relaxed. My legs were noticibley less sore. I felt like I gave them a treat. Karen herself does a number of sports so at the end we talked about our activities, and it was really nice. But in no way did she force a conversation - I was chatty after beging so relaxed. Take away message: if you would like to try a massage but were unsure how to go about it, this is a great place to start. Professional, on time, massaging muscles, that's it.
