I tried out Hosaka Dental after an extensive amount of time researching reviews (I've had bad experiences with past dentists). About a year and a few visits later, I think I'm ready to breathe out and call Hosaka Dental my new dentist! Dr. Cassis is very professional and also approachable. I appreciate her straightforward attitude and that she cites research when answering my questions. It depends a bit on the hygienist, but so far I've yet to experience any egregiously pushy salespeople for extra treatments. The staff at reception are friendly and don't act offended when you ask to confirm dental benefits and cost, as I've experienced at other practices. The entire practice overall is friendly and energetic, which again is a nice change compared to many other dental offices I've been to. The building is on the institutional-side and a little dated, but it's clean and functional. It's an easy-to-find location that's close to the Friendship Heights metro. read more

I would not recommend this dentist. I went in for a cleaning. They took me 15 minutes late and then spent 20 minutes trying to upsell me into a $2000+ laser cleaning after which they said there was no longer time to clean my teeth, but I still had to pay over $300 for the appointment. Overall, they do not appear trustworthy, and you need to be very firm with them or they are likely to upsell you and take a lot of your money. Dr. Erick Hosaka is a wonderful human and spiritual being, first and foremost. He is a very kind, soft-spoken and gentle soul who truly cares about his clients. For any woman, in general, feeling safe is a much important prerogative when trusting a dental or general healer. Dr. Hosaka proved that beyond measure: I felt very safe with him and trusted him. Our bodies are sacred temples of our souls, of the Divine, in fact, and our mouth is the sacred gateway to our digestive health. Dr. Hosaka was gentle and thorough with his dental work. All along, clearly explaining ever once-in-a-while what he was doing. I encourage him to continue with this gentle approach of his, as it truly makes women feel safe and respected. He also has a great sense of humor. He, his equally amazing, gentle, caring dental hygienists and I shared some lovely moments of pure laughter. :) In general, his staff is good. Denise, especially, is a compassionate listener, something that any healing administrative assistant must be, first and foremost: Patient, compassionate, gracious. However, the only sadly sore thumb or prickly thorn or weakest link in this dental healing place is Stephanie Macuch, the Patient Coordinator, which is rather ironic because great, impeccable patience is required for (the coordination of) patients. Stephanie really is a very big issue (read Red Flag). Suffice to say. Hence, the reduction of two stars in this review. On the whole, I have nothing but praises and well-wishes for Dr. Hosaka, his dental hygienists, as well Denise. May the Universe bless each and everyone of them bountifully. I would strongly discourage seeing Dr. Hosaka. One of my family members decided to see him for the first time after receiving a special Xray/cleaning mailer. After the first appointment and cleaning she was told that she needed multiple cavities filled. Highly skeptical of any Dr. that has to generate business with mailers, I insisted she see my dentist (A top rated prosthodontist) for a second opinion. Turns out my hunch was right! These so called cavities were nowhere to be found! I confronted Dr. Hosaka about this and he refunded the money she had paid for the initial examination and cleaning. I like dentists who tell you what needs to be done and don't try to sell you what you don't need. In addition, I like my dentist to be competent, care about his/her work, and explain any necessary interventions. Dr. Hosaka did all of this really well. I had my first visit and after he took the digital X-rays, he sat down and explained to me, slide by slide, what he saw about my teeth. Dr. Hosaka actually did the dental cleaning/exam himself. I was really impressed--at most other dental offices I've gotten hygenists (not necessarily bad). He really spent time with me as a patient and I noticed that I was supposed to be the last patient of the day, but he squeezed in an "emergency" appointment for another person with a dental emergency. And when I left, Dr. Hosaka was deep in conversation with this patient and his wife--it was nice to see. To give you some idea of comparison, I had previously had a negative experience at another dental office (Bethesda Chevy-Chase Dental) where I only got to catch a glimpse of the dentist before he quickly recommended an expensive treatment and left me there with my chart (it turned out to be $200 of an unnecessary treatment). So of course, I never went back there. I would rate that a 1 star experience. I'm happy to be a patient of Dr. Hosaka's! Also, I have to mention that the reviewer below is referencing a whitening kit that is FREE for new patients (as long as you have a check-up every 6 months). It's hard to believe that a one-star review is given because of a free perk given with an exam, but I guess everyone is different. The regular dental perk is included as well (toothbrush with toothpaste and floss). I liked the location of the office (close to Friendship Heights metro) and I liked the office staff. I have been nothing but satisfied with Dr. Hosaka and his staff after two visits. I arrived 15 minutes early and was immediately sat down to start my x-rays. He has a lot of high-tech equipment so you don't have to wait for them to develop. After taking my x-rays he personally sat next to me and took the time to show me what he was looking for in each x-ray as well as ask questions. Rather than the hygenist doing the cleaning, he did it himself, which is very important to me. The hygenist and desk receptionist were very nice too! He recommended a prescription toothpaste but did not feel pressured to buy it. I also referred a friend who does not like dentists to his office and she was very impressed and felt comfortable. I have only been to his office for x-rays and cleanings. It is also a bonus that the view from his office overlooks Wisconsin Ave, so it gives me something fun to watch during the appointment (as well as the TV). read more

I should begin by noting that ever since my father suffered a serious injury during a dental appointment when I was a teenager, I have had a serious (and admittedly irrational) fear of dentists and have had great difficulty finding a dental practice that made me even minimally comfortable. When I chipped a front tooth recently, Dr. Hosaka was recommended to me and I'm grateful that he was. He has the kind of calm, friendly demeanor that puts you at ease and explained to me in detail how he would be repairing the tooth. All through the procedure, he explained at each stage what he was doing and continually asked me if I was comfortable. It was clear he was extremely precise and made sure the new rebuilt area of the tooth merged seamlessly with the surrounding teeth. The office staff is highly professional and extremely friendly. The physical office environment is bright, clean, well-lit and inviting. When you're in the chair receiving treatment, the windows have a nice view of Wisconsin Avenue or there's the TV monitor where Dr. Hosaka provides a choice of Netflix or Hulu. This was, without question, the best dental experience I have had. read more

Dr. Hosaka is a wonderful dentist! However, his staff isn't always compassionate or empathetic. It's dissappointing that I have to be harassed for a $50 appointment cancellation fee. Tone is everything when speaking with patients. When I initially had to cancel my appointment because I was stuck on the naval base, I was addressed by Stephanie with a comical tone; "I'm sooooo sorryyy but you're going to have to pay a $50 no show fee". Of course she wasn't really sorry. The money wasn't an issue as I appreciate and value his time. As a medical professional I know when patients aren't receiving the best care. This isn't the first time Stephanie has spoke to me in an unpleasant way. I have referred plenty of my fellow colleagues to Dr.Hosaka and I personally will not be returning. Again he is an excellent provider but he should speak with his staff about customer/patient care. read more

If you're going to get the "whitening kit (a $840 value)" be prepared to receive something that from my research seems valued more around $112. The kit is personalized plastic trays - which unless I'm missing something the internet values around $100 and two syringes only of 20% Opalescense. My quick internet search showed that this percentage of Opalescense averages online for around $24 for a four-syringe pack. I had to press to get the thing to begin with, even though I had the cleaning (which was ok) and exam per their ad. Hosaka seems ok as a dentist (though he doesn't seem familiar with false advertising law), but one of his dental assistants was rude and dishonest to me in all my dealings with her. For this, I'll just go elsewhere. Not worth dealing with an office where there's someone you can't trust. read more

Dr Hosaka is awesome! He is gentle, kind and his office is new and beautiful with massage pads on his chairs. On my most recent visit he put in a new crown for me and it was virtually painless. He explained everything to me so I knew exactly what was going on and was very thorough. He is also half Asian so you know he's very precise, sorry for the stereotype but Im Asian too!!! My husband and I love Dr. Hosaka! He is very gentle, explains everything he is doing so you always know what is going on, and he's got a great personality too. What else could you possibly want in a dentist? Oh, I know, how about a dentist who will provide those little extras and go the extra mile for their patients. Case in point...I just went today and found out that I had a little cavity (boo hoo.) While in the chair, I mentioned that I was looking for a place to get a milkshake afterwards. I was starving and figured I would only be able to "eat" something through a straw for a couple hours after the appointment. To my surprise and delight, Dr. Hosaka had a yummy chocolate and peanut butter shake waiting for me afterwards. Amazing!! read more

Great service from Dr.Hosaka and his staff! Unlike any other dentists that I have been in the past, he is not only fantastic with kids but explains step by step as he works with you. You can tell he loves what he does. Not only that, but he use advance technology to make everything comfortable and convenient. X-ray pictures normally takes longer with uncomfortable big plastic in your mouth, his machine only take 30 seconds. Then he can immediately bring it up on computer screen to show you the problems and issues. In addition, he can also take picture inside your mouth to show you inside. Lastly, after he helps you, he shows you before and after pictures. The kids love going to see him because they can watch their favorite tv show or netflix movie as they sit on the chair, while he works on their teeth. From my previous visits with other dental groups, I can confidently say that Dr. Hosaka's practice is as good as it gets! The office is clean and has a welcoming atmosphere. When he is working, he always gives a step by step process making it easy for the patient to understand what's going on while your being treated. The location is quite convenient also, making it easy to get to appointments and not fret about parking. The staff is also really nice and helpful! Needed a quick teeth cleaning before my dental insurance expired and I switched jobs. After seeing such positive reviews here I scheduled an appointment at Hosaka Dental and it was every bit as great as the reviews said. The office is almost spa-like with candles burning (no dental office smell here!) and the staff were so kind. The dental hygienist who cleaned my teeth was thorough and gentle and Dr. Hosaka was extremely pleasant to see and took the time to go through everything (not just a drive-by as I've experienced at previous offices). Add in the availability of Netflix and the warm towel and chapstick when finished with your cleaning and you've got everything you need. I have pretty severe dental anxiety but even I had a pleasant experience here. If I wasn't moving cross-country I'd be back in a heartbeat! read more

I found Dr. Hosaka's office both incompetent and unethical. It was probably the single worst experience I've had with a service provider. Here's what happened: * I found their office on my insurance company's website. My wife and I went in for services on Feb 8, 2013 and the administrative assistant told me everything looked fine insurance-wise. Incompetent. * We had our checkups and found the dental services remarkably good. However, then things went downhill. * After our checkups, Dr. Hosaka and the administrative assistant conferred and told me when we went to pay that there was an insurance issue. They told me I had to pay for all of the services out-of-pocket, and assured me that insurance would reimburse me. I paid. I later found out that my insurance requires only a copayment, rather than requiring the patient to pay full price and be reimbursed, suggesting that they misled me, believing that my insurance would not cover the services. Unethical. * Dr. Hosaka proceeded to recommend $1200 worth of additional services and tried to get me to schedule an appointment. Unethical. * Imagine my surprise the following week when I called to confirm that insurance would pay for the additional services, and a different administrative assistant told me insurance would not cover the services. She did not volunteer that they would not cover the original services either (and in fact acted like she was doing me a favor by telling me I should consider going elsewhere for the additional services). When I asked whether insurance would cover the original services, she very sheepishly said that they likely would not. Unethical. * I complained that the prior week's administrative assistant had indicated that Dr. Hosaka accepts my insurance. She explained the problem away by saying that person was a temporary employee. I of course responded that is their problem, not mine. She acknowledged that their office had made a mistake and promised to submit my forms to my insurance company, despite having just told me that insurance would not pay for it. * The administrative assistant submitted my forms to both my dental and health insurance, appropriately. After a month-and-a-half or so, I called to see whether there had been any progress. There had not been progress (see below for explanation). When I found out that there had been no progress, I asked to talk to Dr. Hosaka himself. I explained how frustrated I was to have found his company on my insurance website, and been told by their administrative assistant that they accept my insurance, but that now it looked like I would not be reimbursed. Instead of owning that his office had partial responsibility for the situation, he said that I had signed the form saying I had insurance and therefore his office was not responsible (how the hell could I have known?). He said, however, that he would make sure the forms are submitted to the dental insurance. Nothing changed, however. Unethical and incompetent. * The dental insurance needed a denial form from the health insurance company to process the claim. After 3 months of calling Dr. Hosaka's office to see where the claim was, I called my insurance companies. The dental company said the denial letter had never been submitted. The health insurance company had faxed the denial letter to the admin assistant 3 days after the original services were provided. Incompetent. * I had them fax it again, but Dr. Hosaka's office never submitted it to my dental provider. Eventually I had it faxed to me and submitted it myself. Incompetent. Now it is August and I am still trying to get a reimbursement for my services (for some strange reason the insurance company reimbursed my wife's). I have spent probably a total of 12 hours trying to get reimbursed. I strongly suggest you think twice before going to Dr. Hosaka. read more

I had a bad experience at a dentist in the District so after a friend referred me to Dr. Hosaka I was hesitant. After one visit, though, my nerves have been put to ease. In all my 35 years of visiting the dentist, I've never been so well taken care of. Dr Hosaka took the time to explain every move and event so that I felt completely at ease. Very little pain and a nice, welcoming atmosphere.
