Upon entry we received such a warm welcome from Chef Armando. The all-inclusive beverages and…read morecomplimentary charcuterie were a really nice touch to start the evening, especially if you arrive hungry like I did. We started by learning how to make Chicken Marsala, then moved into pasta making (my favorite part). After that, we learned how to make fresh mozzarella, and finally ended the night with dessert: tiramisu. The entire experience was so fun and interactive. I especially appreciated how knowledgeable Chef Alex was about everything we were making. When I asked about the type of pan she was using and why, she gave such a detailed and thoughtful explanation, which I really appreciated. By then, we had definitely worked up an appetite! We started dinner with a delicious salad and focaccia bread, followed by pesto fettuccine made from the pasta we created ourselves. Then came Chicken Marsala with mushrooms, and ricotta-stuffed ravioli in red sauce, also handmade by us. One of the best parts of the night was the atmosphere. Cooking, eating, and learning alongside people you've never met before somehow felt so natural and welcoming. You genuinely leave feeling like you made new friends. If I had one honest critique, I do wish there had been more opportunity to personally season some of the dishes to taste, as I felt parts of the meal were a little bland for my preference. I also personally prefer softer pasta over a firmer al dente texture. That said, I completely understood why the pasta had that texture since we didn't have much time for the dough to fully rest and develop. I also think some light Italian jazz music playing in the background would have elevated the atmosphere even more and really taken the experience to another level. Overall, I had a wonderful time and would absolutely take another class. It's definitely worth it for the experience, the knowledge you gain, and of course... dinner! Also, we got home (with our left overs) and finally had the tiramisu... and WOW. It was soooo delicious. The ravioli and tiramisu were definitely the stars of the show for me!

We had an incredible experience with Shandra! My mother is vegetarian and most cooking classes don't cater to that. But this class left us full and happy! My mom really connected with her too. This was truly the most unique culinary and cultural experience that I've ever done!…read more I ventured to Borough Park to attend the Uzbek immersion workshop with Damira. She and her husband warmly welcomed us into their home and led us to a beautifully decorated table of what was described as a "welcome snack," but was actually a delicious feast in itself. There was Uzbek dried fruits, nuts, both sweet and savory pastries, and hot green tea. I loved the Uzbek raisins, which are bigger and juicier and just better than any raisins I've ever had! As we ate, Damira shared photos and stories of her family's life in Samarkand, an ancient city in Uzbekistan that lies on the silk road. Once we were all well-acquainted and nourished, we headed to the kitchen to cook the main feast. On the menu were homemade individual breads, spinach stuffed pastries, a spring cabbage salad, a cucumber potato salad, and a lamb stew. Damira was such a great teacher, demonstrating techniques before having us actively participate in the prep, cooking, and serving of each dish. She timed everything perfectly so that we had breaks and ate basically the entire afternoon, while continuing to engage us in stories of her home and culture. When we sat down for the final meal, the delicious food was somehow made even better from the meaningful connection we all shared while cooking it. The four and a half hour class flew by and while I didn't want to leave, I was very happy when we were each sent home with enough leftovers to last another two meals.

Their average teacher tenure is about 10 years. We have been so impressed by DLS and how they provide so much support to parents with lots of advice and experience. Kate and Meredith have each been at DLS for over 20 years and are just fantastic resources. I don't know what we could have done without them! Our son just started their 4s program and he was part of their 3s program. In his 3s program, he was in a class of 10 children with 2 teachers and currently has 3 teachers with 14 kids in his 4s program. I can honestly say that their program is heads above any program we considered during our search with individualized attention given to his progress. He has cooking class, music class and library every week. They have a rooftop playground with a garden and special wood boards, boxes and sawhorses for kids to independently build things from their imagination. Kate and Meredith are also well known in the NYC school community as they have been around forever and are very helpful during exmissions.

Salom! If you are…read morethinking of taking Persian classes in NYC, this is the place to check out. Persian as a language is very rarely taught here and and besides going to NYU for language classes (Columbia is not teaching Persian anymore) you literally have no other options, so I was really glad that I found this online! Rates are affordable (most classes are private and flexible with timing) and the teachers are good and patient at breaking down the grammar, the alphabet as well as introduce cultural aspects of learning the language. All of that translates well into their other programs such as Persian movie night and Persian cooking classes, which are a ton of fun even if you know nothing about the language and/or culture itself. I truly hope this grows into something larger over the years, because given how diverse and multicultural NYC is, I am shocked that this is the only place that strives to provide an authentic Iranian experience to people from other cultural backgrounds such as myself. Even if you don't want to learn a new language because you find it tedious, it's NYC so get out here, make some new Iranian friends and learn something new about another side of the world. We received a run down on how the machine works, learned how to thread the machine and how to fill the bobbins. Then we made a denim tote bag. This was super easy and really fast. After lunch break is the 2nd project. If you don't have your fabric, the school can sell you fabric directly inside for $16 a yard. I bought my fabric elsewhere and brought it in. I honestly recommend doing this instead of buying it from them. Because you have to wash your fabric like how you wash your laundry regularly since it shrinks naturally. We picked our patterns and I made a skirt since a skirt is faster than pants. They recommended not to make pockets or else I'll run out of time. But I HAD to add pockets. Women's clothing have little or no pockets regularly. The instructors are extremely helpful and friendly. and they immediately notice if someone is struggling or stuck. This really impressed me. For example, when I was threading the bobbin, the spool of thread was running out. The teacher was immediately behind me with a brand new spool of the same color so I can swap it out when it was finished. That was a great eye for detail! Overall, highly recommend. Just bring in your own 3 yards of cotton fabric, already washed and dried, for the 2nd project!
