My daughter went to see Dr. McNees last year and was quite impressed with his demeanor and his work. So I decided to go see him too. Unfortunately, there's some nasty reviews here that are absurd. I was highly impressed that Dr. McNees did a thorough evaluation and paid attention to everything I said. Having been a former dental assistant, he was very informative. Some dentists quickly evaluate, dictate expensive restorations then leave the room. Not Dr. McNees. He had the patients best interests in mind, not wanting to do any work that was unnecessary. I knew I could trust him, ask questions and not be belittled. Shortly after, I received a great restoration to my front tooth that is invisible. Also, his staff is fabulously friendly. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Preece who was an amazing, kind, honest, and gentle man. He treated me and my children with dignity, kindness, and respect and I never really thought anything of it until the new owner (McNees) bought the place. Dr. McNees is not very gentle. My 5 year old was screaming in the chair (he never screamed or had any fear with Dr. Preece). I was in so much shock that I didn't know what to do but looking back I wish I would have just grabbed my son and got the H out of there. I didn't know what to do. I was trying to keep cool for my son, but watched in horror as Dr. McNees was short, rude, rough, and impatient with my son. Dr. McNees doesn't have good professional boundaries and I felt really uncomfortable hearing some of the stories/conversation topics that came up while I was getting my teeth worked on. It was like he was having personal chat time with staff while he was working on my teeth. I had to have my jaw numbed for some work and I don't think the dose of numbing injection was right bc my entire face was numb. After the anesthesia wore off I experienced the worst jaw pain I've ever experienced in my life. I had migraines for days that would come and go. I felt like I got hit in the face with a baseball bat. I don't want to get into insurance/money topic but my experience is the same as other posters. There are some shady/unethical billing practices at Healthy smiles. I paid off copay for my visit and was told that insurance would pay the rest. I got a bill in the mail for $1,000. I called and told them that I had already paid my portion of the bill, and they said "No you didn't." Luckily I paid with credit card and I could pull up my statement and show them that: yes I already paid and here is a statement showing I paid. Finally the biller was like "Ok I guess you paid. There must have been a mistake," but they wasted my time and made me doubt and panic. Wonder if I just paid it and didn't ask question. Would they have realized the mistake and returned the money or just banked my $1,000? read more

I would give them less than a 1 star if possible! My husband and I had been patients with Dr. Terry Preece for many years. When he retired and sold his business to Dr. Shawn McNess we decided to try his services. We were repeatedly told by the dentist office our insurance would cover procedures that were not covered. After many, many phone calls I was told I had to pay the full amount. At my husband's last appointment for a cleaning he told the doctor he did not want X-rays because our insurance didn't pay for them every six months. The dentist's office said they checked our insurance and they would be covered. He went ahead with the X-rays and again the full amount was not covered. I called our insurance, Delta Dental, and asked about our coverage. We are allowed a panoramic image once a year, bitewing images twice a year and up to two additional intramural periapical images if needed. Healthy Smiles took five additional periapical images and bundled them together. We were charged $62, $52, $52, $52, and $52 for a total of $270. Healthy Smiles should know this. Their practices are totally unacceptable and dishonest. I asked if other patients were using Delta Dental and was told most of their patients used them. I also see the Better Business Bureau has received complaints from Healthy Smiles Dental as well. Beware. read more

Unprofessional and shady. First I was texted the wrong date for my appointment, now they are trying to over charge me 200$ ( 100 an hour ) for missing my 1 hr appointment for 1 cavity filling. The front desk lady hung up on me while I was politely asking why I'm getting charged for 2 hours (200$) for a 1hr apt. and is now not answering my calls. Before hanging up she said "our computers are down so I can't say how much you owe" then texted me saying my appointment would've taken 2 hours for only 1 cavity. Dirty business tactics. read more

It should be known that the majority of the good reviews and testimonies here are for the recently retired, and very kind Dr. Terry Preece.  I too was a satisfied customer of Dr. Preece since 2018 and was sad to hear the news he was moving on, but wish him well in his retirement. Dr. Shaun McNees took over the Healthy Smiles Dental in August 2023.  As an existing patient, I was notified of this change via a short text, and soon received a reminder notification for an appointment I had made at the end of Dr. Preece's tenure.  To make a long story short, I had 2 appointments with Dr. McNees over 4 weeks in the fall of 2023, and started receiving bills in the mail despite having good dental insurance and paying my copays at the time of service.  The bills reflected my insurance had only covered a portion of the balance.  After much back and forth with the Healthy Smiles office/billing, it was clear that one of their staff had been giving bad information regarding insurance and that I was no longer in-network with Dr. McNees. Although Healthy Smiles staff repeatedly admitted fault, saying they had fired the person that had been making these errors, I was ultimately responsible for what my insurance would not pay.  I explained that it was confirmed that no changes had been made to my insurance at the front desk prior to these services, at no time had it been explained that I was now out-of-network even given the month between appointments, Healthy Smiles had already received $245 between my copay and out-of-network insurance paymemts for a filling that took less than 20 minutes, that I do not make much annual income, this was a lot of money for me, that I am already financially extended with my monthly premiums and copays that I make for this supplemental dental insurance, and had been told at any time I was no longer in network with Healthy Smiles, I would absolutely had not received service from them.   When I finally spoke to Dr. McNees's sister Page, she explained that since I received the service I was responsible for the bill.  When they threatened to turn my bill over to a collection agency if I did not pay an additional $173,  I felt like my hand was forced and painfully wrote off this payment as a fee for having the privilege of never doing business with these people again.  While this billing problem will likely not exist moving forward, I believe this experience is very telling of the accountability and lack of integrity of the newly managed Healthy Smiles Dental and patients should be aware of how they are now doing business. read more

The staff and doctor consistently try and add on services and sell you products. The dentists wife called me aboout a bill that I owed and was very rude and not empathetic to my situation and reasoning for being late on paying my bill. And then my most recent encounter was I trIed to schedule a routine cleaning and they refused to see me unless I agreed to a procedure that would involve 4 visits in one months time and pay out of pocket because my insurance would not cover it fully. Recently moved to Anchorage and had been aggressively researching my new dentist. Had some bad experiences in the past, but decided that Dr Preece was the way to go. Just had my first appointment and boy did I select the right spot! The staff was very welcoming and quickly got me set up as a new patient. Cleaning & exam were totally painless, and the staff pointed out problem areas and suggestions along the way. Dr Preece then visited with me and was just wonderful to chat with. He gave some good ideas for the problem areas, and suggested we watch them and act accordingly rather than overselling a treatment right away. Also worth pointing out, it was super easy to schedule an appointment. I was able to call on a Monday morning and get seen Tuesday morning. They were very flexible in moving the appointment time to accommodate a meeting as well. All in all, such a smooth and comfortable experience. Dr. Preece and staff are very friendly and accommodating. I live in rural Alaska and am challenged with having to coordinate multiple appointments when I fly in. They are always willing to work around that schedule. The practice has state of art equipment, is very clean, and organized. The front desk is willing to submit prior authorizations to not one, but both of my dental insurance plans and provide me an estimate of my out of pocket expenses ahead of time. My dental work (crowns, fillings and routine cleanings) have all been preformed PAIN FREE! Lastly, and most importantly...when I am seen, I feel welcomed. I had been looking for a good dentist in Anchorage for several years. My first experience with Dr. Preece was in an urgent care need as I had broken a molar. Dr. Preece stayed late to help me with my tooth the same day i called to make an appointment. Dr. Preece has a true passion for what he does and is the best dentist I have seen in Anchorage. The care I received prompted me to make appointments for a cleaning and examination. They messed up my insurance and did 3 fillings beyond what my insurance would cover for the year. When they found the error it was "you think you're shocked, we were really surprised too!" Like the $800 bill I received is somehow more upsetting to them then it was to me. Carelessness caused the issue, then after they fact they acted like it was a hardship for them instead of me. Ended up paying the whole bill and never went back. When you go to a dentist you want to go to a dentist office that has the ability to pay attention to detail - which is not this one! read more
