Best hog dog in London? You bet!…read more I have sampled a Big Apple hot dog on a couple of occasions and if different locations, but the most memorable was at Grillstock in Bristol. I was there for the weekend, so on the Saturday I treated myself to a 'Huge Pole' a succulent 8 inch beef & pork dog sausage seasoned with sage, mace and cayenne peppe, a real mouth fall, really delicious! Then on the Sunday we were back, my mate Dave was chatting away to the owner Abiye and the topic food challenges came up, then Abiye laid down the challenge, some guy had done a double 'Huge Pole' but someone needed to take it up a notch, yep, that guy was me. The Triple Pole: The deal was I had to fit a everything in my gob and have a bite, then I had to finish the beast and If I completed the challenge, the 'Triple Pole' would be on Abiye. Guess what? I demolished it with ease, and the main reason was the standard of those sausages, so tasty I manged three of the buggers and that's why Big Apple Hot Dogs is the best hot dog in London.

Hotdogs are street food and should be eaten on the street after having drunk more than you should have been allowed. Sauces and condiments should be added and spilled liberally on expensive trainers. It's the law. AND the hotdogs are very very good. If you're looking for the traditional hotdog- the Big Frank is the epitome. It's exactly what you want. If not, go for the the Big Dog. It's a polish sausage of impressive stature. Not down with pig? Get the 100% beef dogs. You know you want to. I have to stop here because I feel slightly uncomfortable. I keep wanting to describe things, but all I keep coming up with words like Huge and Succulent and in conjunction with various terms for sausage, it's a bit... um.. suggestive. Shake shack was one of the only restaurants still serving food after 11:00pm on a Saturday. This seems to be the local spot for late night munchies after a night of drinking. Shake shack also has low priced wines and beers on their menu. Ordering the food was easy and done on an iPad. Food came out fresh and fast. Plenty of indoor seating. Good music was playing for a Saturday night which I enjoyed.

Portion sizes are good. Heaps of chilli, sour cream and cheese were served over my bratwurst and brioche. I'm not a good pork eater, but their 100% meet dog, made with a beef and pork mix, was tender, delicious and made on site with locally sourced meats. It's all locally sourced or made on-site in fact, even down the veggie hotdog. The beer selection is wide, bottles from all sorts of craft breweries (large and small), and the brother/owner who served me was hopeful to get some of the really local beers in soon. The chilled atmosphere meant I ended up chatting not only with the owners, but other customers as we ate, and I must say it was a great experience. 10/10

Being a German, it's simply a treat to once in a while treat yourself to a Currywurst or a Krakauer...and so I appreciate the folks at Wurst Club for giving me this opportunity. What I missed was a place to sit and by means, this is nothing that the shop owners can do about, due to the space constriction, but not working around the area, I had to find a place to eat my wurst. I had ordered the homemade Kartoffelsalat (potato salad) and while the portion was plenty, the taste didn't exactly hit the right spot. (Maybe I can give away my mother's recipe, as her potato salad is delicious!) My tip: go for the Currywurst as this is the most German you can get. I ordered the Berlin Berlin meal deal which is Curry Wurst, Chips and a drink for 6.95 which puts it in the top end of my lunch time pricing. Considering that it markets itself as German street food is a little pricey but then again the rent on a unit on Cornhill will be steep. There is not much space to eat inside so I would recommend The Wurst Club as a takeout place. I was impressed with the food, the curry sauce on the sausage tasted great and the chips were very crispy. I'll definitely try it again.

My dining companion got the lamb and rosemary pie with gravy and I got a sticky toffee pudding with custard. You walk up to the counter for service, and the team behind the counter whips up your food right then. People in the queue with me were advising me on my choices because you could get the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream or custard. They all recommended custard since obviously they could tell by the way I was acting, I've never had it before. The pie and mash come with either liquor or gravy and again people were advising us to try the gravy. We were not steered wrong. The lamb pie was excellent. I don't know how they keep these crusts from getting soggy because the pies are already made but somehow they do and it was really tasty. The sticky toffee pudding was a little sweet for me and actually I think I would've liked it better with ice cream. I think it might've cut the sweetness a little bit but all in all it was an excellent experience. The weight staff were helpful and efficient. So this place is not a white tablecloth place. It is just a little hole in the wall bar, but it was exactly what we were looking for.
