I brought in some gear to sell, and I expected that they might not accept an item or two. That turned out to be the case, which was no problem. The part that made me want to leave two-star review was the way I was told that my gear wouldn't be accepted. The person who was doing intake told me "We don't accept trashy or tactical gear". None of the gear was tactical, we're talking Better Sweater from Patagonia here. Trashy seems a little extreme an adjective to describe someone's consignment gear. Felt like a too-cool-for-you vibe. My wife and I were visiting the Asheville area to do some training hikes in preparation for her climbing Kilimanjaro. She was wanting to look at a couple of pieces of gear, so we stopped at Second Gear. Fairly quickly we were approached by April who offered to help us. She was super friendly and seemed genuinely more interested is being helpful than making a sale. She also said, "I've only worked here two months, so if we run into something I don't know I will get help from someone who can answer any question we have. Which we found refreshingly honest. she eventually got hep from another staff member and they answered all our question. We loved this store and the amazing help we received! my wife wound up finding exactly what she wanted, and because they were so patient, she very confident in her purchase. read more

Over the last 5 plus years I have been frequenting this establishment & do notice more new gear and less " second " gear. Absolute gem of a place- in terms of people and product. I've been going to second gear for years and will remain a loyal customer. They are very friendly and fair if you are wanting to sell- just remember to keep it good quality and seasonal. The selection of consignment varies but they always have a great stock of camping and outdoor essentials from soaps to snacks to bags. Even if you don't find something used, you will most likely find it new at a good price. I really appreciate their local selections and variety. They work hard at the community piece and seem to be quite active. The store is very organized and clean. There is pretty good parking. Popped in here while visiting Asheville and got a variety of cool things for hiking and the outdoors. I liked that the store had lots of space, was very clean and had some things that I needed at decent prices. I bought a $50 gift certificate for one of my kids while here, but then I lost it! I emailed to see if I had dropped it in the store. I was contacted and told that they hadn't found it, but if I wanted, they would cancel the credit card transaction and gift certificate. I didn't do this, and I double checked everywhere and eventually found the gift certificate, but who does this for a customer? I will be back! read more

I went to second gear hoping for some deals, but found that a used pair of women's Keens was $95 and a used pair of Patagonia women's jeans was $75. I might as well buy this stuff from REI or the manufacturer's own website when they're on sale- they wouldn't be much more expensive! I went to the Haywood West Asheville shop to look for a kayak paddle. Although I live in Florida, it is exciting to find a 2nd hand Outdoor Gear shop. Most of their gear seemed a bit high priced, but I did find a great used all-weather jacket which I needed to go hiking as rain was predicted. The staff were very nice & helpful. read more

This is my favorite used clothing store for athletic gear. Every month an item remains in the store, it becomes as extra 10% off, so they follow the Filene's basement model. Also, when you take in your clothes, you can get either 50% as a check or 60% as a store credit. Half the store is North Face, Patagonia, Lululemon & Lucy. They also have backpacks, bikes and everything an outdoor adventurist could dream of. The staff are super friendly and helpful. Definitely stop by, especially if you need a quick later item for a great price. Plus, they also have some vintage athletic wear, which is fun to see. Also, they sold 5 of my items in less than 45 days. So I was super impressed. read more

I went to Second Gear to see if I could sell my bicycle on consignment. The person behind the consignment counter took the bike out of my jeep. I didn't go with him because I had to move the jeep out of their parking lot. He wasn't very nice about offering to work with me and said their split is 50-50. I asked him if he could do better than that and he wouldn't. They also would not repair the back tire and told me to go somewhere else. I did and the guys at Trek fixed the tire for me right in front of me, so I know they didn't steal anything from my bike. It had a really nice 5-way reflector on the center of the handlebars for front headlights. When I got home I noticed it was missing and I called Trek to see if he noticed anything missing. He said, he noticed the headlight was ripped off. I have strong reason to believe that someone from Second Gear stole my headlight. I spoke to the store owner who denied stealing anything from my bike. He said," People steal from me all the time." I thought this was motivation enough for him to steal from me today. When I told him I believed it was stolen from someone at his store, he denied it. I have a feeling it was Peter, the guy who took the bike inside while I was parking my jeep. In short, this shop is in a bad neighborhood where people are known to steal. The service here was poor and I would not choose to do business with them again in the future. read more

O.K., parking is parallel or go right next doorish to "King Daddy's" back lot. We finally figured out that all that parking is for the long, brick structure that houses businesses on Haywood Road. Well, you might not want to park, anyway. You might want to just keep right on going. I mean, come on, who wants to pay for dirty backpacks?! One "North Face" one was even scratched up in the most obvious place possible! Why did Second Gear accept that dreck? Why did a consignee have the nerve to even submit it for sale? Why did I not read Yelp reviews before we went to Second Gear? Most prices are high. Some items are retail samples, so that is interesting, but they were expensive as well. Those samples are always very ugly, anyway. Who wears the color of cantaloupe? Yeah. Some prices are reasonable. We saw a "North Face" purse for a decent price, and it was clean. However, it had a magnetic closure- no zipper. An "L.L. Bean" purse was priced too high, but looked pretty decent. Other bags I could not inspect because a woman announced through a directive aimed at her toddler that I was taking too long to look at bags; then announced to me after I had vamoosed that they wanted to look, too. Apparently, pixie haircuts give you timely access at the expense of others. The employees do not greet you. They just laugh it up. Maybe they think that the free items bin by the entrance is funny, because those items are actually trash. Get out of gear, and try to find other options. read more

I've given this place a few chances, but I've never been satisfied with their selection. It is consignment, so the store doesn't control 100% of their inventory. Most of the items are in great condition, but the prices are a little overwhelming. They are less than retail, but not at all what I would be willing to pay. Today, my experience was beyond awful. The staff was unbelievably rude to us. We did come in just before closing, which they immediately let us know upon our arrival. We looked around for a few minutes to the song "Closing Time" while the staff giggled. They changed the song to "Hit the Road Jack" which immediately gave us the signal that they weren't interested in making any more sales for the day. They thought it was hilarious, as they continued to laugh about how unwelcome they made us feel. We left, and made sure to let them know we wouldn't be returning. Wow! The most expensive outdoor store I've personally ever been in. The prices were outrageously high and these are USED products. There were very worn jackets being sold for $100, used shoes with no tread left being sold for $80. They do have a color discount pricing system(only on off brand items) but even with the "discounted" prices everything was still over priced. In my opinion they prey on out of towners not knowing the value of the products and expecting them to overpay. Ridiculous and I will not be returning. read more

This consignment outdoor store is in my hood, so-to-speak. They have a little bit of everything, but it is a hit or miss when it comes to sizes. If you live in the area, it probably pays to come in here on a regular basis so you can catch a deal when it comes in the store........and in your size. Found this place by a recommendation from our waitress at King Daddy's when I was asking if there was anywhere I could get a hiking guide book around the area. This place rocks! Second Gear is apparently a consignment shop in west Asheville specializing in outdoor gear, clothing and footwear both used & new. I didn't have time to really shop, but dang I wish I had had more time to browse, because it looked like they had some good deals. I'm not sure what people in NC are used to paying, but compared to new REI stuff - yeah baby! Besides I love to buy used stuff - better for the environment! I used to go in the Second Gear when it was still downtown , the other day I strolled through West Asheville and this one had a few things on a hanger I saw and was interested in. I entered the store and passed an employee that didn't say anything, that's ok , sometimes I like it when the people in stores are not overly attentive, I can mind my own business and in this case I didn't really look for anything specific anyways. I looked around for a while and realized that two other people that worked there almost went out of their way to not get into my way, odd i thought they even avoided eye contact, looked away. What I didn't realize is that they are selling used gear I thought it is stuff that doesn't sell in other Outdoor-stores kind of like Ross or Marshall's just for outdoor clothing and other things that are useful for hiking, biking or sports in general. Shows that their wares are used, at least the shoes are , not only used but also dirty. Maybe I m picky but I have to say I would give shoes that I m trying to sell a good scrub before I put them on my shelf in a store , the ones I looked at had so much mud in them that you almost knew the hike on they were worn on last. I m ok with reselling used things and am sure if you want to try something or have kids that grow fast it's for sure the way to go, but that being said I would prefer it clean when I buy it and a hello when someone enters would be cool also read more

I encountered the rudest staff member ever when I walked into this store last week. I went there to see if I could consign a sleeping bag and tent. I barely made it through the door before one of the staff members told me that if I had anything to consign, it likely wasn't going to be accepted. She didn't even see what I had in hand before telling me this - and the encounter just got worse from there. I've been consigning for over 15 years; I know what it takes for an item to be considered acceptable for consignment. Nevertheless, the staff member was not only rude, but treated me as if I was beneath her and not worth her time. I ended up leaving the sleeping bag and tent with her to donate to Homeward Bound. I will NOT be coming back to this store ever again - and it's not because my stuff was not accepted for consignment. The staff need to be fully trained in customer service and basic manners before being left alone to work the floor. read more
