Absolutely HORRIBLE…read more I have experienced Chronic Pancreatitis my whole life, caused by an auto immune disorder. I came in today when I had major back pain that radiated to my pancreas area. I was in severe pain crying. I had several tests done while remaining in the waiting room which was completely fine with me. It was a bit busy, and I was fine waiting for a room. They brought me back after about 3 hours. I was in agony at this point. I spoke with a doctor who seemed nice. He explained that everything on my scans looked fine. I kindly explained to him my situation, he assured me that he would re-check my results. The doctor came back after about 15 minutes. He had told me that my scans looked fine, and that my pancreas and gallbladder looked good. However, I had my gallbladder removed 7 years ago. I was alarmed, and informed the doctor. Afterwards he shuffled out of the room quickly. I was extremely upset, as I was still in pain. The doctor didn't explain any other test results, and just offered me an anti-acid medication. At this point I was frustrated, and it was incredibly obvious he didn't review my results, and prescribed a medication that I had never used to treat my pancreas before. I left that hospital without any medication, I decided to wait for a second opinion from my PCP, who will actually review my results. Stay away from this hospital if you have any choice.

The staff at Hershey medical system were blessed with the skills to save my mom. My mother had a major stroke on Saturday. She had a complete blockage in the area controlling speech and movement on her right side. She arrived at Hershey able to understand but unable to communicate. She couldn't lift her arms. She literally was scared to death. Likewise, my dad, who witnessed everything, was panicking. When we got the call, we threw some stuff in a suitcase and drove all night covering over 800 miles to get there as soon as we could. When we arrived, we went directly to the hospital. Of course I had updates from my family, but I still wasn't sure what I would see when I walked into her room in the NICU. The moment I stepped over that threshold, I knew I still had my mom. Not mom with a new normal, but MY mom. How did I know? She was complaining about something. Yep, that's my mom, bless her heart. (And I mean that in a true southern way!) I've already established my belief in divine intervention, but it was the excellent staff at Hershey that actually performed the miracle. The moment mom crossed the ER threshold, she was hit by a whirlwind of activity. Time is critical for a stroke patient. Within the first 1/2 hour, they confirmed the stroke and had a specialist paged. Less than two hours from getting wheeled in into the ER by the EMTs, she was in recovery from surgery. The surgery was delicate (as are all brain surgeries, of course). This particular surgery takes advanced skills - her neurologist said that even they revere these surgeons. The doctor said that they got the entire clot but didn't know her prognosis. He did say that recovery was going to be slow. The wonderful care didn't stop in the ER and OR. The nurses and support staff were second to none. Not only was mom well cared for, we were also recipients of the helpfulness and kindness of the staff. We were kept abreast of every test and procedure. They made sure that the doctor came by while we were there - keeping us tightly in the loop. We had pertinent phone numbers so we could always speak with her nurse. They helped us set up her portal (clear cookies before enrolling). Mom was a nurse so she has exceptionally high standards for nursing care. Even she was impressed. There were a couple of hiccups. The food was awful. I wouldn't have eaten it either. They did not do a very good job at helping her with hygiene. She said she had a bed bath but whatever they did, sure didn't do what was intended. In 5 days, she had only received 1 bath. Please be aware that the medical center is HUGE and you will most likely have quite a trek to the room. Seriously, after the first day, I traded my cute sandals for my tennis shoes. There are a couple of places inside to eat but we didn't try them. A very busy Starbucks is in the lobby. Us fellow Penn Staters feel especially at home with the replica of our beloved Nittany Lion sculpture in the rotunda. A life size replica of our mascot sits on an outside bench just begging for a photo shoot. If I ever need urgent medical care while in town visiting, there will be absolutely no question on where I'll go. Hershey Medical Center. It's undoubtedly one of the best. And, to the staff - thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving my mom. Bless you all.

I soon found that four other people I knew of had contracted staph through surgery here. My family member was out of work for four months and had to wear a wound vac 24 hours a day , seven days a week during this time .

After a sudden attack of crippling severe pain & nausea, we called for an ambulance to take mom from a local hotel we were staying in while in Huntingdon for family reunion. ER doctor was baffled so admitted her for observation. Since it was a Saturday no tests or specialists were available for 2 days! I mentioned moving her to larger hospital. They assured me it wasn't necessary. But 4 days later of watching her suffer in tortured pain, we insisted they transfer our mother to The Geisinger. They said she was probably just constipated and needed an enema. I found out later Dr Waddle made a chart note on the 3rd day that mesenteric ischemia must be considered but they still didn't move her or treat her until morning if 5th day and only because we insisted. By the time they medivaced her to The Geisinger, her small intestine was necrotic & she was practically dead. Despite emergency surgery, we had to withdraw her from life support and watch her die slowly for another week. Sixteen days of hell and my family has been devastated for all time by their bungling incompetence. It cost my Dad's sudden decline in health & he died after 18 months of horrible loneliness and grief. The drs at Geisinger told me if she had been transferred within the first 12 to 24 hrs she would probably be alive. Instead they just let her rot to death and had the audacity when I asked them to do a better job of managing her pain that "we think your mother is confused about her pain" After they told us what had caused the initial attack of severe pain, I was able to find her fatal condition in a 3 minute Google search which stated "any elderly person admitted to ER with pain disproportionate to physical findings, acute mesenteric ischemia must be considered". They killed my mother! I will never forgive their lying to us. Dogs get better treatment than my mom did. To make matters worse the floor nurse was a total witch & yelled at my 83 yr old father who had been thru a stroke and had atrial fibrillation because he laid down on the extra bed in the room. He was physically and mentally exhausted watching his wife of 62 yrs dying before his eyes in excruciating unmanaged pain which they thought was her exaggerating her condition. I hate this hospital! This was where she had been brought into this world and they were the cause of the excruciating and unnecessary sudden end to her life. I tried to get justice but drs lie and cover for each other. Stay away from here if you want to live!
