I had high hopes for this place given the mostly positive reviews on Yelp. Unfortunately, my family and I were sorely disappointed. We came here on a Wednesday evening at 6pm and there were fewer than 10 people seated (not including a half a dozen or so at the bar). We had two young kids with us so we ordered quickly in hopes we could get the kids settled, fed and back in the car before they started acting like kids. We ordered chicken fingers and fries for the kids, wings and French onion soup for ourselves followed by a cheesesteak and a cheeseburger. We did not see a single piece of food until 7pm. Literally - one hour from when we ordered until even the kids food showed up. We asked the waitress to check on everything about 45 minutes into the evening and could hear the chef say, "you tell them it'll be out when it's ready". Two stars rather than one because when the food did finally show up it was mostly good. The wings were great, the cheesesteak was great - the burger was tragic, borderline inedible. It tasted like it had been grilled directly on charcoal that was doused in lighter fluid. I'd have sent it back if I wasn't 100% sure we'd end up waiting another hour for a replacement. I'm fairly certain this place won't care about this review - but I hope if you're reading this you'll be dissuaded from wasting your time, money and energy and look to any of a number of other amazing restaurants in the area that serve great food and provide amazing service. read more

The restaurant is supposed to open at 3, and it was about 3:10 when staff finally unlocked the door but failed to acknowledge, much less greet us. The food was overcooked. The chicken was dry and the French fries were so overcooked about a third of them were inedible and the rest were unpleasant. We finished our sandwiches and the server felt compelled to say, "It must've been good!" (Why do servers do that?) It wasn't good. We were hungry after being in the car for several hours. read more

When in Jefferson and you need a new place to go, it's somewhere on North Harpersfield Road called the Heartbreak Hotel, sorry couldn't resist. A Jefferson landmark for burgers, prime rib nights, and the wings. Friendly staff good selection of beers, during hunting season always packed. Ciao for now. read more

Really good food, nice atmosphere and great staff. We showed up with a large party and there were only two servers for the entire bar and restaurant due to the staffing shortages impacting the entire region. The staff had a great attitude, communicated, and did the best they could to serve all the guest who continued to show up throughout the evening. All left with smiles read more

One of the greats. The Heartbreak Hotel or simply "heartbreak" is a staple upstate for my family. We frequent this place when we go up to our cabin. The food is good, the people are friendly and the atmosphere is awesome. Old rickety floor boards, cozy bar setting, pool table...it's the best. The food is also really good. The wings are always a must have their burgers are super tasty. It's a short drive from our cabin and will remain one of our favorite spots to go to when we are up for a weekend. You've got to know what kind of place you are walking into when it comes to the Heartbreak. As long as you've had your tetnus shots, you should be ok. Just kidding. According to local legend (ie, my dad), the place has changed hands more than a few times since HE has lived in the area. I think the current owners have it right, though. A well stocked bar, solid favorite foods with a few surprises and friendly, competent service. Don't change a thing. We went on a Saturday night and had the prime rib special, which was fantastic. The sweet potato fries were spot on, the salad fresh, and the wine delicious. Our waiter was on top of everything, we had no qualms. Dad paid for dinner since apparently my money is no good in your town - that's his smartass way of picking up the bill every time we visit - so I can't tell you how much the final bill was. But it seemed reasonable on the menu/specials board. He goes regularly, and you know those seniors don't waste their money on bad food nor put up with horrible service. So if he were on Yelp I think he'd give it four stars too. :) read more

The atmosphere of the restaurant really fit the whole town. It had a very rustic vibe to it, and definitely matched quite well with the town of jefferson. The waiter was clearly stressed, but still polite. I ordered the prime rib special which came with mashed potatoes and green beans. The outside edges of the prime rib was over seasoned with obscene amounts of oregano, and the center of it was not seasoned at all. As for the mashed potatoes, they tasted as if there was no salt or butter in them, and they were slightly cold. The green beans were also undercooked and cold. Ordering a side of fries after the meal was a mistake. They were burned so bad that the fries crunched heavily all the way through. The bar portion of the restaurant had a nice rustic and homey look, however, any bar that serves shots in a salad dressing cup is not a bar I want to be at. All in all I do not suggest going here. Heartbreak hotel has two entrances, right door leads to the bar and the left leads to the actual restaurant. Going to the restaurant, just sit down, as there is no host. The atmosphere is a little cheesy and seats are uncomfortable. The food was very good. As a party of four we had several different samplings from the menu. Steak, chicken and lobster, (which was a weekend special). The steak was cooked perfectly and very juicy. The mashed potatoes were very creamy and buttery and the fries were up to par. The service was friendly and attentive, but having to travel 500 feet and through the bar just to get to the mens room is quite annoying and inappropriate for young children read more

Yes, this establishment has a "local crowd" but the staff is more than welcoming to see a new face. They were more than attentive while my fiancé and I sat at bar waiting for take out. I got the "heartbreak steak & cheese" and it came with homemade French fries, fresh roll with real steak, onions peppers with gooey cheddar. It was a delicious treat with a few cold beers. My fiancé ordered penne ala vodka with a meatball. My Italian fiancé approved the meal with two big thumbs up! My wife and I are in town for a weekend wedding and stopped in direct from Albany Airport after a late flight. Our B&B host said it was the only place still serving at 9pm. The expectations were low, but we were very pleasantly surprised. I had chicken parm and a glass of Wild Turkey bourbon and my wife had chicken Marsala, along with wine. Both meals were tasty and really hit the spot. The service was very good and pleasant. We will go back if we have a chance. read more

I have family in Stamford and visit quite often. The Heartbreak Hotel in Jefferson is always my favorite dining place. Rustic, friendly and great food always. I love the ribeye there. Every time I think I might try something else I can't. It tastes like it was cooked on a backyard grill and is always perfect! Time after time after time. Consistency is such a factor in a great restaurant. Also constant is the staff. Always smiling, attentive, but not overbearing, and pleasant. I WILL BE BACK. Thank you! read more

First off,they think it's okay to add gratuity to there check when they think tbere not going to get a good tip . On the menu it says 'gratuity will be added to parties of 8 or more ' The owners allow them to do tbis6,not okay. Weightress's are rude and snotty,so that's pros why they add gratuity to the check because they know there going to get a chappy tip. read more

We came here for dinner on a Saturday night after someone recommended to us their prime rib; we were really excited to try it but unfortunately, they ran out. This was our first visit and it definitely won't be our last. I called in our order to go and it was ready at the sports bar right when the friendly and helpful bartender said it would be. The jalapeño poppers and wings (medium) were good. The buffalo chicken wrap probably would have been delicious if I had ordered medium instead of hot... At other places, I'm used to ordering hot and getting something with a little kick but that's not the case here - the hot burned from the first little bite and got a lot worse with the second (which was also the last) - if you're looking for triple dog dare hot this is the stuff. The regular fries and ranch were great but the best part was the burger. It was a thick, juicy burger cooked medium well as requested, and the bacon (thick n crispy), grilled onions and American cheese were the perfect toppings (the mushrooms were a touch strong for my liking but were still kinda good).
