The restaurant is cute & warm, an actual old mill. Our 1st time to Roxbury NY & a last minute trip to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary. We walked in without a reservation. We were seated within 10 minutes which was very nice but the waitress/host seemed a bit annoyed. To be fair there were only 2 women serving the bar & restaurant and as someone in the service business, it's not easy BUT it's not an excuse just understandable. THE FOOD...it was good but I was disappointed in my Smoked Duck app which had three small thin slices of duck. The apricot vinaigrette was the star of the dish. The scalloped potatoes were good & were not soaked in cream & butter which I liked. Hubby had his go to drink, a Manhattan and it was ok. His entree was Pasta Carbonara, it was very good. All in all 3-stars maybe 4 because the ambiance was romantic or maybe that was us LOL. read more

Don't order the fish! I had the Baked Cod - it was really off-tasting (something you don't want in seafood!), overly fishy and unpleasant. My dining companions ordered the short rib, which was much tastier and tender. Perhaps this is one of the places that exceeds when it comes to "turf", but you should avoid the "surf." I also ordered an asparagus soup, which was too salty, but had the texture of a bean/split pea soup. They also served generous pours of wines and had friendly service, otherwise. Keep in mind this is a very pricey establishment. For a dining party of 3 people, our bill was nearly $200 for something very middle range -- it's not the glitzy-est of atmospheres for that high price. Instead, it was dark, dank and basement-like. The Old Mill is a welcome addition to the (ahem) limited dining options available in Roxbury. Housed in a rustic renovated old mill, we loved the wooden beams, dim lighting and homey feel of the place. My gin-based Roxbury Mule was served up in a nicely chilled copper mug, strong and tasty. Hubby said his local Faith American Ale was very good too. Learned that actor Kelsey Grammar owns this Catskill-based brewery, based on his fond childhood memories of the area. Ya never know. Pasta with shrimp was bathed in a creamy saffron-based sauce, really delicious. My skillet chicken with potatoes was jazzed up with half lemons, garlic cloves and fresh herbs. Highly recommend this flavorful and generous dish. When our lovely server (sorry didn't get her name) overheard that we were celebrating a birthday, she dug up a candle and then comped our blueberry pie with ice cream. Such a wonderful surprise, thank you so much! For now the Old Mill is open Thursdays through Sundays only, and reservations are highly suggested as the place gets busy. read more

Cosy atmosphere, cool reclaim of an old mill. Service can be hit or miss (our appetizer plates were not cleared before the mains were brought out and we weren't offered new cutlery, but that is just a pet peeve of mine). I enjoyed the food. The short rib with scallop potatoes was a winner. The lobster orecchiette was good. Good portion sizes. Happy to return again. read more

I cannot express how wonderful this restaurant is! Chef Kevin came out to our table of 5 to greet us. He asked us if we would like him to make our meal family style so we could all share in his amazing creations!! We said of course. What happened next was a table full of succulent short ribs, incredible Nudi's (gnocchi with ricotta instead of potatoes), a halibut wrapped in phyllo dough (a different take on Beef Wellington) the salad was amazing as well as the homemade blueberry tart in an almond crust. Our waitress Sharon was excellent. She was kind and attentive. A true delight! Anyone visiting the Roxbury area must try this hidden gem!! read more

The food here is excellent! Seriously good! But the front of house... not so much. My son and I came here for dinner. We didn't have reservations so we were sat at the bar. It is such a cozy place that we didn't mind, but the bartender seemed to be annoyed with us. I've no idea why. A couple came in 15 mins after us and sat at the bar as well. It was their first time at the restaurant too. They were treated with smiles and conversation and then offered a table that had just opened up. We were not offered a table even though others had opened up. Ok. Whatever. She was annoyed with us for some reason. Our food came out in an acceptable amount of time and it was fantastic. I couldn't have been happier with my meal. Unfortunately, the lamps that hang over the bar and over our food are covered with spider webs and dead bugs. See attached pic. The front of house needs work and I truly hope it catches up with the quality of food coming out of the kitchen. We will definitely come back and hopefully some of the kinks will be ironed out. Please please at least clean the lights hanging over the food. It's unpleasant and unsettling hoping no dead bugs fall into my dinner. read more

Sept 1, 2023. We frequent the area often and love to try local restaurants. Unfortunately we really wanted this to be great service and a good time. A wedding party was here and it took over an hour to get our food and most of the menu wasn't available. My food got to table with the rest of the food coming later. I asked for the manager and no one ever came to the table. My daughter waited 1.5 hrs for 20 penne in a bowl with butter. My mom who is 75 had to wait and sit. Not one apology from the waitress and no one came to the table to apologize for terrible service. Managed poorly. Food was ok. Will go to Peek a Moose or Chappies in the future. Enjoyed a lovely dinner at the old mill. We had 6 people and chose to all get the skillet chicken (they have a 2-person option). We all loved this dish, one of the best chicken preparations we've ever had. Flavorful, juicy, and loved the accompaniments (onions, garlic, lemon, and potatoes). We didn't leave a bit behind. We'd come back time and time again if we were local just for that dish. We also tried the beef skewers (so flavorful and tender and the cucumber salad with it was delicious), wedge salad (the dressing is fantastic), pea soup, crab cakes, and a few desserts (our favorite desserts were the peach berry pie and the sticky toffee pudding). What got me is I've owned a restaurant for 7 years and I could hear the chef screaming and cursing through the dining room. Literally the worst thing for me to happen out to eat. Where do I even begin? We ventured in because we were staying at the Roxbury Hotel. We started with drinks, expertly prepared and presented in pretty glasses (a little flare). The food was amazing. I actually interrupted conversation to point out how delicious and fresh our SALADS were. Yes, when the salads are that good, it gets you kind of excited for the next course. Wow! We had a great dinner last weekend at The Old Mill! The cocktails were fantastic and the Skillet Chicken for 2 - OMG. We NEVER order chicken in a restaurant, cause I make it all the time at home...but so glad we did! We asked for the recipe and the chef, Kevin came out to tell us how he made it. This restaurant and its sister restaurant Chappies are understaffed and it shows with long waits and stressed out workers. The owners should be present at these restaurants to make sure things run smoothly and efficiently. The food was OK but the experience was horrible at both restaurants. Next time I would get food at the many delis and markets scattered around the Catskills and skip these places. read more

We hosted our pre- wedding / rehearsal dinner / welcome drinks shindig here. The food was great the ambiance was super nice by the river. Terrible terrible service. We were one of the first couples in last night, got our dinner after other couples/tables got theirs, the waitress didn't come back after bringing us our meal to see if we wanted more to drink or if we liked our food (which was cold by the time it got to our table), and then we sat for over 30 minutes waiting for our check. There was one lady behind the bar and one running around the restaurant. We plan to stay in Roxbury again but won't eat here. it's a hard pass, bad experience overall and food mediocre. read more

First I'll say that the food was absolutely 5 stars. We went on Sunday night knowing that there are staffing shortages all over in the service industries. Quite honestly, the service we had was wonderful, just infrequent due to our waitress having the responsibility of not only covering the full restaurant floor, but also running the bar, mixing drinks, taking orders and running food at the bar, seating people, running food and drinks in the restaurant, and bussing tables. We ordered the chicken skillet which was perfectly cooked, seasoned and presented. It arrived in an 8" Lodge cast iron pan and consisted of 1/2 a chicken as moist and tender as I've ever had. It was accompanied by potatoes, garlic, and onions and a lovely a just. My husband's meal was also quite good. He had short ribs with Hasselbeck potatoes and green beans. The ribs melted in your mouth and were nicely seasoned. We will definetly be going back. Go when you have time to savor and enjoy your meal, it's worth the wait! read more

The food itself would grant this place a 4 star rating. Everything else about it however, is the reason for two stars. Upon arrival and informing them we were there for our reservation, we were coldly greeted by the staff and made to wait at least ten minutes with no further info. When we were seated, we ordered almost immediately. We certainly had time to peruse the menu while we waited to sit. It took at least 45 minutes for our soup and salad to arrive. It took an additional 30 minutes for our mains to arrive. The staff were completely inattentive and rude, purposefully avoiding any contact with the patrons. I understand if they were a bit short staffed, but there was absolutely no sense of hospitality in any case. We were made to feel like a burden as paying customers for asking for something as simple as water. We were patient and kind, and tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but after this experience, we will probably not return. Unfortunately, there's not too many options in Roxbury. One positive note though, is the skillet chicken was very tasty. I just wish it didn't take an hour and a half to get it. read more
