I really didn't know what I was missing until I started coming to Portland Thai Boxing. I have been…read moreon and off studying different martial arts styles for most of my life. I have taken Kempo Karate, Kung-Fu at a couple of different places and Chinese San Shou kickboxing. I started at PTB thinking I knew a thing or two but quickly found out that despite a black-belt in karate and about 8 combined years of training, I have no idea how to fight. Other schools, even the kickboxing school I went to previously, are so nervous about students engaging each other one-on-one that they very rarely allow it. As a consequence you never learn to defend and counter when face-to-face with a real person. At Portland Thai Boxing I have only spent time learning skills that are applicable in a real fight situation. How to punch and kick in combination, how to adjust distance and timing and most valuable of all, how to see, read and react to an opponent. It sounds basic, like the kind of thing you'd expect to learn at any martial arts school, but in my experience it is not. I want to stress, that even though you will do one-on-one work with another student, that this is a very safe and fun environment to do so. Everyone I have worked with has adjusted to take into account that I am a beginner at this. The most experienced fighters go slow, make their strikes obvious so I can see how to block or evade and give advice on how to do it better. Kru Wijers makes sure that everyone stays under control and stresses that we are there to help each other learn, not to prove we are better. If someone is going too hard he will remove them from the class. There are men and women of all ages in my class and classes solely for women as well. This is a beginner's perspective on the Thai boxing classes. There are people at this gym who train for MMA fights and serious, full-contact, knock-out Muay Thai. I have no intention to do that myself and that is perfectly fine here, but having that level of training going on, and working side-by-side with dedicated athletes raises the bar for everybody. This is a boxing gym, you dont come here for a treadmill or to get swole. That helps keep it not too crowded. We roll in, participate in a well planned hour of drills and hard work, and roll out. Let me just say, this is one of the most comfortable boxing clubs I've ever been in. 2nd floor with windows all around. The natural light is amazing. There is a ring and plenty of bags and gear. They sponsor a club, and if your goal is to throw down for real you can acquire that skill and practice here. My goal in coming to McConnell's was simply to help give me an outlet for moving my body. I didn't join with the intention of actually learning anything, just show up, cardio, and go home. It's been such a chill experience that I now take 4 classes a week, I'm gaining muscles, and am developing actual skills and knowledge. But the best part? I MADE FRIENDS! Typically I'm here to swim laps and take water aerobics, so can't comment on the gym classes or equipment. Itzel teaches water aerobics M-W_F at 9am and her classes are packed largely due to her energy and the workout everyone gets. It's hard to keep a class fresh when it's three times a week, but Itzel manages to keep everyone engaged with excellent, varied music, exercises, and her smile and energy. For lap swimming, this is my favorite pool because it's much longer than the other LA Fitness locations At 25 meters vs 25 yards, which really makes a difference. There are 3 lanes, which swimmers split, and rarely do you have to wait for a lane unless you want to swim at 10am on M-W-F right after water aerobics when many people stay in the pool to continue their workouts. The showers, sauna and locker rooms are relatively clean. I say relatively, because it depends on the volume and the cleanliness of those using these spaces. I will say the woman who cleans the ladies locker room works her bitt off and is always sanitizing and wiping things clean.

I live on social security and I don't think it's fair that they just keep my money that they don't deserve to have I was not there my last month and I wasn't there a year. It does not take long to get a good sweat going, and before you know it you can feel the toxins and bad juju just melting away. They several types of water to re-hydrate room temp and cold water and sparkling water. I do believe I saw some plates that had oranges or apples or something of the sort. Be sure to try one of the foot scrub baths and massage. It really is the perfect tonic for pampering and stress relief. The massage therapist who handle my feet and calves was super friendly and professional. This foot care scrub and massage really the feet and calves much needed tension relief. There is a wonderful outdoor relaxation deck with lots of lounge chairs and tables to take breaks in between soak, sauna, and steam. This deck area overlooks a portion of the Portland city scape and highway. What made this deck enjoyable for me was waxing existential about what the folks in the cars driving by on the freeway might be thinking as you head back for a second dip into the hot tub. The SPA, locker and shower, and changing areas are all thoroughly maintained, clean, and give you everything you need to transition back into the Portland Urban. The gym goers each morning were also great to work out with, everyone was so positive and putting in their best effort even though it was 5am. I can't wait to return to Portland and attend again. The space was very clean, organized and had all the equipment you could want. I noticed a couple people were having personal training in the back half of the gym while the class was going on, so that looked like a great option too. Easy to park and there are cubbies to put your belonging in next to the workout space. I felt so welcome and already part of a team even though I was just a visitor there.
