If you find yourself crusin' the I-5, craving some massive baked goods, and looking for a road-worthy stop, seek out the rustic comfort that is Heaven on Earth Restaurant. The interior is a marriage of rustic country charm and Christian kitsch. The service is hospitable and not overtly judgmental of road-weary heathens. Food is classic comfort foods and American standards; the food is filling, but nothing too special. Prices are high, and not due to use of quality ingredients. The bakery items are better than the food, in my opinion. There's apple and berry cobblers, pumpkin bread pudding, pies and cake by the slice, and samples of several items on any given day. Everything is available to-go. What makes me stop at the HoE is their pineapple upside down cake and their world famous cinnamon rolls, which come in two sizes: regular, and family sized (read: as big as your head!). I'm not a huge fan of cinnamon rolls; they are a baked good I could take or leave on any given day. However, I have gotten some wonderful, fresh out of the oven, moist, cinnamon-y, sticky rolls here and with the addition of their fondant frosting (which comes in a separate container if the rolls are too warm to frost before packaging) is wonderful and not overly sweet for the whole experience. The pineapple upside-down cake is one of my boyfriend's favorite types of cake, and he says HoE does it justice. All in all, a good place to stop, stretch your legs (there's not much of a view from the sparse parking lot), drop some dough and fill up on sweet, sticky baked goods and enter the carbohydrate coma. Three stars is generous. The window says open pit BBQ and salad bar. You walk in to the smell of sweet cinnamon rolls but alas no BBQ pit. Only BBQ they serve is a BBQ beef sandwich. The overzealous waitstaff made us feel badgered to place our order. The obviously new waitress described the topping on the crumble as Marion berry with cinnamon and stuff on it. She had to be reminded about our drinks. When we did get them they arrived in these very large heavy interesting glass boots. I had to ask for a regular glass which apparently took her a few moments to comprehend. Our dinner was conversation was interrupted by multiple staff constantly asking if everything was OK. It got to the point we gave up conversation. The food had odd portions and was subpar. Chicken fried steak was way over salted and was served with a half scoop of mash potatoes and veggies that were half cooked broccoli and over cooked zucchini. The meatloaf was decent but a bit peppery again with half a scoop mash potatoes and the same veggies. Apparently Marion berry jelly is OK served with everything. It was quite odd to have little cups of jelly served on a lettuce leaf in a portion cup on the dinner plates. We pulled out our cell phone and looked on Yelp for nearby places to eat....Heaven On Earth was the first places that popped up and it had great reviews and now we know why. Staff were friendly and the menu was huge and everything sounded great. They serve large portions of food so we had dinner in the car later that day. This past weekend I drove up from Central California to this restaurant after I saw it off the I-5 last Sept. when I was driving through OR on the way home. The atmosphere here is so relaxing and the food and employees there were just great. Had a nice talk with Christine, the owner. I ate breakfast there and bought 10 cinnamon rolls and a pie (froze them immediately in my on board ENGEL freezer in my SUV). Both were delicious. I was finally able to check this place out and when you see a place with a huge cinnamon roll sign on it, you automatically think this cinnamon roll is unlike any out there. I've had many cinnamon rolls but what stood out to me first was the price. This thing was so freakin' expensive like around $7 a roll!! I have never paid for a roll that much. Plus, it was normal size, like any other cinnamon roll. I paid for it because I thought that the taste must be why it costs so much. It tasted so plain, just plain and hardly any cinnamon in it. And then the frosting was your plain powdered sugar frosting. No cream cheese frosting. And to top it all off, there wasn't that much frosting. I had to make my own and put it on it. I also had to add a little salt to give it more flavor. So disappointing.... If the roll was so average in size, so plain, such little cinnamon, little frosting and plain frosting at that, at least price the item at between $3 - $4. This is a real gem on the way through Oregon. We took a trip from Sacramento to Portland and stopped here on the way up and back. The staff was extremely friendly but not pressuring. They were very informational about what Oregon had to offer as well as what was good to eat. We shared a huge breakfast burrito on the way up that may have been the best I've ever had and on the way down I bought Apple crisp, pineapple upside down cake, toffee, cinnamon rolls and a 9-pack of coconut macaroons with cherries on top. Each thing was more delicious than the last. I would highly recommend this to anyone even if you don't have plans to drive through. I would go out of my way to eat there and buy some more baked goods. read more
