After a careful analysis, the young man returned and handed me an estimate for $2139.90! I took my car to Scott's Aluminum in Columbiaville (Route 9), NY, less than 10 miles from Van Allen and the gentlemen there did more work than was on the Van Allen estimate for $500.00! It looks gorgeous and was done with careful and correct professionalism. I don't know where Van Allen gets their data from, but I would NOT go to them for auto body work!!

At most, it was estimated that my car needed $2k of repairs (engine belts are expensive). It was the holidays and all mechanics near me were swamped. It would take at least 2 weeks before anyone could start working on my car. So I checked online reviews for other well rated mechanics near me. Chuck Scott Auto was located 18 mile from my home and was frequently mentioned online as the best and most affordable garage. They were also the only mechanic in a 25 mile radius that could start repairing my car immediately, so I had my car towed there. I ended up with a hefty repair bill of $3800, which included $225 for a new battery that I didn't authorize (note that my call history didn't show any missed calls from the garage before they added a new battery the day my car was towed back to my home), 2 new engine belts (even though only one needed replacing), new calipers, new rotaries, new brake pads, etc. According to the bill, my car was basically rebuilt. The car started and looked great. I was shocked at the steep bill, but I figured it was worth it to ensure that it safely operated. A few months later, I had issues with steering and the brake pads getting stuck. So I took my car to a local mechanic. They found that my tires had been loosely attached. It was just a matter of time before the tires fell off while I was driving. In the meantime, the improperly balanced tires were wearing away at the new calipers. I mentioned how much work Chuck Scott Auto had done on my car and showed this mechanic the invoice, which was still in the glove compartment. He checked my car for each item listed on the invoice. The 2 new belts? Only one was new; the second was rusted and looked like it was the original. The expensive new battery that I didn't ask for and probably didn't need? It turned out to be a cheap lead acid battery, not the more energy efficient and longer lasting GEM battery. I recalled that during the initial inspection of my car after auction, no one mentioned an issue with the battery. So the mechanic supposed that the original battery was taken to do repairs for another car and I was given a low quality replacement that wouldn't last a year. Ultimately, the mechanic confirmed that I was majorly ripped off. My car didn't have half of the "new" parts listed on the invoice. I strongly advise other drivers to head elsewhere for car repairs.

Yesterday morning I spent time with my granddaughters in Woodstock NY, attended my Parkinson's…read moreboxing class in Kingston and headed back to my home in the Adirondacks in my electric car. I knew I would need to charge up somewhere. I hooked up to a station near my class and the charger didn't work but I knew I could make it to the Capitol Region rest area on the Thruway so I wasn't concerned. Unfortunately, none of the rest area's chargers were working, either, so I searched for the nearest chargers. I had about 25 miles left on my car but on my charger app I found chargers that work for my car 13 miles away at Crossroads Ford. I called them and spoke to someone who assured me they had the chargers, that I didn't have to have a Ford to use them and that they were in the parking lot so even if the business closed I could use them. He even said they had a fast charger but from my app I could see that the connector for that charger didn't work for my Leaf. I pulled into Crossroads with 12 miles left and spend the next hour trying to make any of the four chargers work: making phone calls to the charger company, downloading the app, etc. When we determined that the four chargers were down for good, I went into the dealership. I had noticed that they had a charger plugged into a car in the service area. I asked the manager if I could use that charger for 20 minutes to get enough of a charge to make it back to the Thruway and get to the Stewarts in Latham where I knew they had a fast charger - and then I could get home. The manager said no. I begged him to just let me use it for 20 minutes and he refused. I went out to my car and all I could think to do was call a tow truck and have my car towed the 20 miles to Latham to the Stewarts, which is what I did. My trip home, which usually takes 3.5 hours including a charge, took me 7 hours and the expense of a tow. The manager at Crossroads could have helped me and for no apparent reason, cruelly refused to let me charge for 20 minutes - and this is after the Crossroads representative I talked to on the phone gave me misleading information about working chargers. No explanation, no apology, no concern for my situation - really cruel, actually. I have no idea about Crossroad's sales or service but the management is seriously lacking in human kindness. I think the character of a company's employees reflects the company as a whole and Crossroads is seriously lacking.
