I have to recommend the delicious food at Hecky's! I've been a fan since the 90's! The barbecue was good then and it's good now. It's the only place I patronize on the far north side for good barbecue. The service is efficient when you call in an order and the staff is pleasant and accommodating. The prices are what you would expect for really good barbecue. But what really impressed me with Hecky's is their catering service. I tried it for the first time last Thanksgiving and was thoroughly satisfied! They prepared me a whole, fully cooked, smoked turkey for a decent price and I ordered a 1/2 pan of black-eyed peas too! When I tell you those were the absolute best tasting black-eyed peas I had ever eaten! It's now my most favorite catered food from Hecky's! So, if you like really good barbecue and delicious catered soul food, then I recommend you pay Hecky's Barbecue a visit! read more

Well, yesterday's visit to Hecky's Barbecue enabled me to unlock the "Porky" badge on @foursquare for checking in to barbecue spots! I checked-in on Hecky's FB page too, AFTER placing/receiving my order and returning to my car.....low&behold, this sucka (ME) for any type of discount....could have gotten 20% off! Dang! I was actually really wanting to give you guys another try. However, an order I placed over an hour ago and it's still not ready! Wtf!!!! I understand it's the fourth, and hence I would have been fine if you told me it was going to be a wait. However I was told it would take 20 minutes for a small rib tip. I arrive and You have a ton of people waiting in line for bbq they preordered for and that they haven't received. You also are not implementing social distance and a 6 foot distance of people inside your restaurant waiting for hours. There are over 15 people jammed packed in a BBQ hut. You also have people who are concerned health wise to walk into your restaurant to see the status of their order because they don't want to jeopardize their health. This should be a huge red flag people!!! I ended up leaving my not ready order because I'm tired of the BS. I really really wanted to support you and give you another chance, especially because you are a black owned businesses ( we have to support one another) but you all need to get your stuff together... and quickly. I have been here a couple of times. I ordered rib tips and wings. When we placed our order we asked several times if the wings were full size. Not only were the wings like party wings, they had no seasoning. Rib tips were tough. I was also disappointed because I wanted mild sauce and got BBQ sauce instead. Prices have gone way up. Not enough staff to manage lunch rush. Everything is extra. Ordered pulled pork sandwich. Serving was generous but bun bottom so soggy I could barely eat it as a sandwich. I started eating the sandwich within two minutes of it being assembled - so it wasn't soggy from sitting for a while. Water advertised and listed as one price but I was charged a different price. Online prices even higher than walk-in prices. I like Hecky's but will probably not return. We had the pulled pork, Mac and cheese, fries, and chocolate chip cookies. The pork, bbq, rolls, fries, anD Mac and cheese were really good. The chocolate chip cookies were ok, but that is not what we came for anyway. There is not really seating to eat, as this is mostly takeout and catering, but there was a bar that can seat several people. As we were eating I came to realize that we weren't just supporting a local business, but a business owner that takes great pride in this community and making the life's of the people that live in the community better. I ordered $50.00 worth of barbecue from Heckys on 8/8/20. It was an absolute disappointment. Barbecue was boiled then put in a oven or microwave to finish . No smoke or flavor at all. Rib tips cut in giant pieces , boiled and fat. Hot links and wing pieces same way. Greens and cole slaw the same. Have not tasted the sweet potato pie yet. The only good part of this meal was the French fries ! I threw this meal into the garbage.. I feel as if I was pimp slapped and taken for over $50.00. Funny thing is I ordered from here a couple of weeks before the death of Hecky. Everything was fantastic. I even raved to my son about it. My condolences to the family on the loss of Hecky. I love Hecky's! It's such a staple here in Evanston. The menu is varied by way of the proteins & so flavorful! I like all the choices for sides as well. Mac & cheese - delish! If you like greens, you'll enjoys Hecky's. I love the Peach Cobbler as well. Here's a secret: the fried chicken...help me! Personally, I like this MUCH better than the establishment around the corner. If I want fried chicken, this is where I'm going to get it! Seeing Hecky at the place warms my heart. What a let down! My husband and I were the only customers in the restaurant yet the woman taking orders ignored us for at least 5 minutes, I had to approached her to ask a question about the menu. As we waited for our order, I could see the cooks in the back making our sandwiches without gloves on! That's basic hygiene Hecky's!! Despite this I ate my pulled pork sandwich which they didn't even bother to make sure the meat was hot, I mean really you just had your bare hands on my food the least you could've done was make sure it was properly warmed. The texture was so mushy it broke through the bun which was a poor match for the product. So bummed at the lack of care for customers and the food they service. I won't spend money here again. The Hecky's choice ribs are nice and meaty, but not as smoky as I remember...covered heavily,of course in the signature BBQ sauce. I specified the fries packaged separately because if not, they get really soggy underneath the meat(s). The white bread that is included should be excluded as tasteless. Their legacy is the sauce, sold on site in bottles as well. Had I gone to a restaurant and ordered this stuff, I might be raving. BUT 2 hour delivery is UNACCEPTABLE. There is no reason for a $3.50 delivery charge. There is no reason for the restaurant not to call when the order has taken more than an hour. Absolutely ridiculous. Are you really THAT busy? I called the restaurant after waiting an hour. I was told that my order wasn't there, so it must be out for delivery. I live a 5 minute drive away from Hecky's. When the delivery guy gets to the door TWO hours later (and an hour after the food had supposedly gone out), he said that he drove over immediately. So, somebody is lying. I was so annoyed but also so hungry. Then I found out that they missed my corn and got all quiet and calm (this is scary and not remotely good). Perhaps I will try it again (take out, never making the delivery mistake again). Frankly, I'd rather drive all the way to Pilsen for Honky Tonk. I'd be eating sooner anyway. Hoo boy, was that good. I hadn't been to Hecky's for years. I used to live near here around the turn of the century, and Hecky's was a takeout staple. Today I got a big pile of food and headed over to the lakefront park just south of the NU campus. It was a little breezy for a picnic, but luckily all the droplets of sauce blew into my mouth and not on my clothes. Pulled pork sandwich: B. Tasty but skimpy on meat and the bun was too greasy. However, this was the Keno special--sandwich, fries, soda for $5. Fries: B+. Crinkle-cut goodness, perfectly cooked to be crispy on the outside and hot and mealy on the inside. Somehow these stayed warm for a really long time. Turkey drumstick: A-. At $4.75 for this and some fries plus a slice of bread, this is one of the best lunch values in Evanston. This is not your grandmother's Thanksgiving drumstick; it's deliciously moist and there is a ton of meat on this thing. Plus, you know, the barbecue sauce, which certainly was not standard at my childhood Thanksgivings. At least 6 napkins required. Rip tips snack pack: A-. By this time I was ready to burst, but I ate most of the rib tips because they are damn good. Another good value at $5.65. Corn muffin: D-. An afterthought in my order, and obviously an afterthought to Hecky. It was all just as good as I remember. The sauce is very, very close to my Platonic ideal of Barbecue Sauce. Unfortunately this review is about a problem that should not exist. I am a medical student who drives Uber to help ends meet. I went in to pick up an order and stood at the counter for a few minutes. The cashier at the end of the counter never said a word (the place is very small, so she surely saw me). After a few minutes, I turn to her and ask do I pick up here? She said yes and I said "I have a pick up for...". She then turns, picks up a bag and hands it to me. I say "thank you" and turn to leave. As I am leaving, a middle aged caucasian man walks in (I'm African American) and before he gets to the counter, she says "Hello! How can I help you?" This happens very often and I think that most times we dont even realize we are doing it (or maybe we do). It is very sad that a business, licensed in the state of Illinois, in 2018, does not greet and treat all of its customers the same. I've also been a small business owner, since 2007, and I take pride in providing the best possible customer service to ALL of my clients.
