I'll start this by saying that my experience with Hecky's Barbecue was from a huge order that could probably feed 50-60 people. Thus, the quality wasn't as good as it probably is normally, so I would probably have given it a 3.5. The wings were quite good. It was packed with flavor, and the smokiness from the wings sticks to your fingers hours after the meal (even after washing your hands). The wings were definitely the spotlight of the meal. The pulled pork seemed to be a little bit formless, there were strips of pork here and there, but the texture ended up seemed to be a little bit over-processed(over-pulled?). It could just be preference-based, but it wasn't for me. Furthermore, the sauce was insanely sweet. It tasted twice as sweet as Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce, and I have a pretty big sweet tooth. I was too lazy to make barbecue, so I decided to takeout from Hecky's. I had wings and rib tips and I think this was the best order of rib tips I ever had from Hecky's. The tips were incredibly tender and prepared perfectly. I've never had the fried chicken, so the wings were a pleasant surprise: jumbo sized as the menu described and the tips were removed, so they were easy to eat. Very, very good, and consistently so. Hecky's Barbecue produces excellent barbecue meats at a cheap price. Service and hospitality in this carry-out store are good. The non-barbecue meat side dishes are mediocre. Those would be items such as greens, peach cobbler, coleslaw, and so on. Hecky's has been around for a while. Its product has been consistently good, year after year. A few years ago, the owner was involved in some kind of dispute with another business about the use of the Hecky brand name. However, this was transparent to us customers, since the food and everything else in the Green Bay Road store was unaffected. The food remained as good as ever. The store has a broad selection of meats on its menu. It offers everything from rib tips and chicken, to turkey, beef brisket and pulled pork. The breadth of the barbecue menu makes it likely that most patrons will be find some item that suits their preference. See their website for the full menu. I, myself, prefer rib tips. I think that Hecky's rib tips are outstanding. Hecky's accepts charge cards. Street parking near the store is usually not difficult to find. To start, Go To Hecky's for the FOOD. It is delicious for being in Chicago and having spent some years in the south of these United States, I should know fairly well. That said, I ordered delivery from their website and boy what a disaster. I was all excited to be trying a BBQ place that I could call 'home' but as I was tracking my order via their website it said it encountered a problem. It could not communicate with the store and my order was not going through. Seemed strange, so I tried to call the store a handful of times. Their phone went straight to voicemail and the mailbox was full! So I took to email, and never to this day (a couple of weeks later) have gotten a response. However, after making myself dinner because I assumed that I would not be getting my BBQ, some guy calls me saying my delivery is here. Well, I'll be darn, sure enough, it was Hecky's. But no email back, and having phone calls go straight to voicemail with full voicemail... I have been a customer of Hecky's for over 23 years. Over the past 3 years the customer service and the food quality has gone down. This past weekend I decided to order some BBQ, what a disappointment! The fries were burnt, and the rib tips were all bones and fat. I called the store to see what they could do and the Manager Ibayo refused to speak to me. KeKe ( cashier ) she said Hecky himself would call back me the next day. Well, that was 3 days ago and he still hasn't called. Obviously, he doesn't care about his customers or doing the right thing when they screw up your food. Saw this place as i was driving by, looked good and i was hungry, so gave it a try. It was fine.. but nothing great. I asked the worker whats more popular, the brisket or the pulled pork sandwich. She said she didnt know. I said, ok....then what do you like better?. She said she had never tried either sandwich. I almost fell over. How can an employee not know what the food tastes like?? Don't order delivery! We live 10 minutes away from Hecky's. We ordered delivery around 6pm. We had an out-of-town guest and a hungry family all eager to eat. About an hour & 15 minutes later, we called to see where our food was. It showed up shortly after our call - ICE COLD. I have only been to Hecky's one time and I was not impressed. First of all, I felt out of place as the staff was less than friendly. It took forever for my food to come out (More than 15 minutes) and there was no one else in the place. They had taken my drink out of the fridge when I place my order so by the time I left with my food, my drink was warm from the heat. Due to the unfriendly staff, I did not feel comfortable asking for a cold one. I just wanted to get my food and run. I was in a hurry so I didn't check and later found out I had a container of greasy BBQ and NO napkins! Not one. Seriously, that was the worst part because I had a meeting immediately after lunch and I needed clean up supplies and had none. Very disappointing. I grew up on Hecky's (the Evanston location) and love it. I have had every damn thing on the menu and have never been let down. Hecky's, my gosh how I miss you now that I no longer live in Evanston. Everyone who has reviewed this place raves about the meat, and I completely concur. Any type of meat Hecky's cooks up and slathers in its characteristic BBQ sauce, is good. But I'd also like to point out that you MUST also get the macaroni and cheese side dish, and peach cobbler for dessert. After a few years of living in Evanston and many times of passing through the intersection of Green Bay and Golf, I finally got around to checking out Hecky's. I met a couple of friends - two walked, one biked and I took my car - note only street parking if you drive. We planned to get our food to go (I think you can only get take out or delivery), and went to a picnic bench by the not-incredibly-far beach. A friend recommended the mac and cheese with BBQ pork. I was so sad they were out of mac and cheese! I just got the sandwich and fries. Fries were really good, actually. Other friends got the chicken bits, which tasted really good. It was all a little pricey, in my opinion. (Is ten dollars a lot?) I went back today and got the mac and cheese and snack pack rib tips and it was about $10. Now, here on yelp, I see there is a coupon for $2 off $10, so do that if you're already on here! Anyway, mac and cheese wasn't amazing. I love it at the nearby locale, Merle's. My son requested bbq for his 9th birthday, so we splurged on Hecky's. The bill was over $100 for my family. Very disappointed. Sausage and cole slaw were good, but the chicken, brisket and fries were very disappointing. The brisket was dry and without much flavor. Really Hecky's? Wow - was thoroughly surprised! Wifes out of town so I had the rare opportunity to gluten myself. Upon first glance there seemed to be a good deal of recent negative reviews so I was reluctant to order.. but glad I did. I ordered a full slab of baby back ribs, mild sauce and a side of baked beans. 40 Minutes after I placed the order, everything arrived super HOT and well packaged! I live in Michigan, so I'm missing Hecky's BBQ. Made some jackfruit pulled BBQ sandwiches yesterday for dinner. I'm trying to eat more of a plant-based diet, but the recipe called for BBQ sauce. My favorite Chicago southside rib joint (Uncle John's) recently shut down and I needed a rib fix. Since I was in Evanston, I thought I would try Hecky's. Turned out to be a good decision. Hecky's manages to combine the tenderness of northside ribs with the tangy sauce of southside ribs. And unlike southside rib joints, Hecky's fries are not an afterthought. They still taste great after being reheated the next day in the nicrowave. Since Hecky's is just minutes from the Century Theater, I'm looking forward to trying all the menu items on my moviegoing visits to Evanston. Buried somewhere in these reviews are words that I vaguely remembered: "Hecky's has half-priced ribs on Mondays." I know things change and accuracy isn't always to be banked upon, but I was in a Hecky's mood anyway, and completely prepared to pay full price for some MEAT. When I asked the Hecky person what looked good tonight, she said, "Well, all our ribs are half-price now, between 5 and 9 pm every Monday." SCORE! A full slab of ribs (NOT the baby backs!) for $10, instead of $20. Wow! I even got a Mutt to complement it. (The Mutt is rib tips, chicken, sausage, fries, that piece of Wonder bread, all floating in BAR-B-Q!) Always smart to buy too much and munch on it the next day, especially at those prices! read more

Summary: I've lived 10 minutes away from Hecky's most of my life, and I haven't missed much. OK barbeque that's overpriced. The Intro I stepped into the place greeted by a wonderful bbq smell. That's always a good sign. A large metal smoker that takes up most of the room - very nice. No descriptions on the menu, but I was the only one there so the staff answered my questions. (I came in on a late Sunday afternoon) The Food I got the "Super Mutt", consisting of a bunch of Rib tips, 4 pieces of Fried Chicken (two wings and two drummettes), 1 full sausage, and fries. The entire plate is drenched in bbq sauce. I respect what they're trying to do with that, but it unfortunately soaks everything to the point of having no texture. Rib tips Decent tips that are inconsistently meaty or bony. The good ones have a pleasant texture, a nice blend with the sauce. The bony ones were quite annoying. Fried Chicken A nice, simple fry that was ruined by being soaked in sauce. The crispiness of the skin would've made a nice compliment to the bbq soak. Sure, in the future I could ask to have the chicken placed on top of the sauce, but it tells me that texture is not a consideration in the delivery of the food. Sausage. They call this a "link". It's a full-sized sausage. Whatever. This was the worst part of the meal - a big, clunky, dried-out piece of who-knows-what. The skin was shriveled, bits of the sausage were falling apart from the inside - I don't want to know how old the sausage was. Very disappointing. Fries They were at the bottom so they were essentially bbq sauce sponges. From what little bits of untouched fry that I could taste, it was an ordinary crinkle-cut fry. I think I saw some spices but again, I couldn't tell due to the drenching. The Sauce A nice bit of tang, but there was a syrupy quality to it that was a bit off-putting. There was also so much of it that it was a bit overwhelming. I would consider getting their sauce as an add in for other food. Side Notes I don't penalize Hecky's for being take-out only, street parking only, nor in a not-so-awesome part of Evanston. It is what it is, deal with it. :) I'm more concerned about the taste of the food, you feel me? Will I go here again? No. Not with Buffalo Joe's and other dives two minutes away. If you go, make sure you get the baby back ribs. I had a groupon , but it was for the spare ribs. Huge mistake. Even Heckys sauce couldn't make up for these ribs. These weren't even edible. I have never been much of a BBQ fan, but Hecky's may have converted me! The chicken is always amazing quality meat, the ribs are so tender they fall off the bone, the pulled pork sandwich is huge (both the meat and bread are amazing), and I could eat the beans and rice all day long. They even have sausages made in house, i have only tried one kind so far, but I loved it. The sauce is delicious (my favorite is the hot), what I appreciate most about it is that it isn't overly sweet (which is usually my complaint about BBQ, too sugary!), Great food, great staff, great prices. We decided to order after a recommendation from a friend. What a horrible idea! We ordered online and followed up with a phone call. The employee who answered was incredibly rude. The food arrived on time. When I opened the container and saw my ribs I was disappointed. They were uncut and looked old. I took a bite and was so disappointed. They didn't have any flavor and tasted like that had been cooked in the oven. The fries were cold and the rib tips tasted like they were also cooked in the oven.
