I attended the Juneteenth celebration on June 19 in Evanston. Hecky's rib tips were one of the foods available for purchase. They were absolutely delicious!. Sometimes tips from anywhere can be overcooked, dried out and tough. These tips were fresh, tender and drenched in just the right amount of sauce. If all my rib tip experience were like this one, I would surely live on rip tips alone. My compliments to the chef! read more

FANTASTIC BBQ. Have been going here for years and food is fresh, filling, and unique. Hecky himself is the best and he is very friendly and you can tell he cares about his customers and Evanston-Chicago community. BEST BBQ SAUCE my family has ever had, and the pulled pork and chicken is top notch too! I like the cheeseburger and french fries, unfortunately they don't sell them as a combo, so you end up spending about $10 for the two. $10 for a lunch time meal during work is a bit much for me, however, the food has always been really good, so I'll splurge every few months. read more

Very upset. I ordered online at 5:50 pm. The food didn't arrive until 7:30pm. I paid $26 dollars for an order of rib tips and an order of fries with special instructions. The tips were to have no sauce and the fries were supposed to have sauce and now I'm sitting here with some drinched bbq tips that I can't eat anyway because I don't eat pork and a bag full of dry fries. Delicious food with above and beyond personal service. We ordered hecky's for an event and were personally greeted by Mr. Hecky. The delivery group was cordial and efficient. They even made an extra trip to bring us cups, drinks and silverware because we forgot to order them. I would definitely use Hecky's to cater another event. read more

The staff is very friendly ; but what I really like is Hecky's has something for every budget. Weirdness here. First off, the food was great. No complaints there. I iive in Chicago north of Howard. When I asked the grubhub delivery person if I'd already included a tip on my grubhub order, he told me he assumed when he saw an address north of Howard that he wouldn't get a tip. I told him that felt like a racist assumption on his part, but whatever. I tried to call the restuarant twice to report this and got put on hold a long time the first time, less long the second but I was kind of done at this point. if you do not want to serve parts of Chicago you don't like, Hecky's, then say so, ok? read more

I am not a fan of this place. The last couple of times I have ordered from here my food has pretty much sucked. I actually put a big, giant, meaty, sauced up chunk of rib tip in my mouth and it tasted really bad, like poison even. I said, "ew gross" then I spit it out and put a huge forkfull of coleslaw in my mouth to cover the taste. There was such a bad aftertaste, like the pig was raped and tortured before death or maybe he was an evil pig(s). Whatever, I wont be back. They also promise free delivery if you order from their website but that is not true. The site always charges my card for the 5 dollar delivery anyway and I have to call and complain, so watch out for that. read more

Hecky's is the best Evanston bbq. The pulled pork sandwiches are very tasty and the mac and cheese is STELLAR. I am not a big fan of cole slaw usually but Hecky's is pretty good, not too creamy. And everyone that works there is incredibly friendly. read more

This is a great local spot for ribs and BBQ. It's not fine dining, but that's not what it pretends to be. It's yummy food served fast by friendly employees who appreciate your business. The owner also donates his time and money to support local community groups, and that's something I like to support as well. read more

**last time i came here was 10/08/11** i have come here off and on for many many years. every time i go it gets worse and worse in terms of service. my last 2 visits took the cake, i refused to come here ever again. first i called in for a order and they said it will be ready in 20 mins. well my order wasnt ready instead it was ready 40mins later so i waited for 1hr because they cant tell the customer we are backed up and tell them the real time. they tried to give me a slice of cake and i told them no thanks i just want my order i told them. they never did anything to speed up the process to get my food. finally got it and they just poured the sauce on. my food was swimming in it. yes sauce is good but over sauced is terrible. the last straw was when they messed up my order. i asked for spicy sauce on the side with a order of a mutt and wings. instead i got wings and a turkey leg. i call them up and informed them of the mistake and asked should i bring it both in so they can see it or just bring in the mistake. they told me just bring in the mistake. so when i get there i tell them here is the mistake i didnt get my mutt. and they gave me a dirty look as if i was lying to them. they made me the order for the mutt i didnt get. i didnt get my sauce on the side nor was it the spicy sauce. i didnt hear a im sorry. and by the time i got home my wings were cold. so yeah.. after that experience i refuse to promote or go to hecky again. o btw i think im one of the few who actually tried heckys in downtown when they tried to franchise it. that should tell you how long i been going to heckys. read more

I must say, one night I just had a hankering in the late evening hours for some BBQ. All my regular favorites are very far away from where I live (Rogers Park), so I went for Hecky's because of their proximity to home, and delivery (I'm not about to lose my parking space mannnn) for a second or third time. I've previously had the chicken wings and fries--a meal special which is decent. Another time I ordered the hot links and they weren't my favorite, yet and still, I figured let me give them another shut. I recently ordered "The Mutt" can't say I'm a fan of that name, but nevertheless it had a bit of everything I was craving in it--BBQ chicken, rib tips and the hot links (which I was willing to give another try. I also ordered a side of mac and cheese (the WORST considering this being a soulfoodish type of restaurant--or am I mistaken?) I ended up receiving my food hot and in a hurry, but it's just not the same as some of my favorites. As others have mentioned it was DRENCHED in sauce and while that carried much of the flavor, the meal was otherwise bland. I will say the star of the trio turned out to be the hotlinks this time. I must say Hecky NAH to ordering from here again--despite my random and spontaneous BBQ cravings. read more

This is the conversation- Hecky's can I help?, Whom am I speaking with?, Roxanne, ok, it would be nice to know. She says can I put you on hold. SUre, I haven't a choice have I? I hear a heavy sigh. 2 min, later she comes back. I aksed if she was taking an order from another customer, no, she replies, it was the manager. I ask to speak to the manager of the restaurant whom is on duty now. One moment, 5 minutes later, I get Floyd. I ask about delivery. I am 4.7 miles and 13 minutes from them. Sorry, you are out of our delivery area. Hmmm, ok, but sometimes we make exceptions, like on slow days (today) and when we have two drivers....but today, we only have one. So, if we get a call to Wilmet, (2.2 miles) they will be upset because we are late. Ok, who 's the owner of the restaurant? Hecky is, great last name, powell, ok, is he there, yes, may I speak with him? just a sec,.......3 min later, I am sorry but he is unavailible. My point is this, it is a slow day, the manager states, I am 4.7 miles from them, Wilmett is 2.2 miles, I wonder why the OWNER was not available to speak to a customer whom wished to place a HUGE order with them? CS is number one in any sector of business. To be treated in this manner, well, I will go else where. Perhaps, they are doing SO well, that they do not need my business, nor the business from my friends and family, which is word of mouth! I have been going here for years. I get the fries without seasoning. I have noticed that some of the cooks will put the fries that have been sitting there back in the fryer to get the seasoning off and give them to me. If you have ever had a french fry that has been put back in the fryer then served to you will know how awful they are. They are so hard and greasy you can't eat them.......Anyway.....I was waiting to see Hecky so i could tell him about this. Well, today was the day. As soon as I got the sentence out that I wanted to make a complaint he was loud and rude. He became very defensive and put the blame on me. He asked me if I have ever told them to give me fresh fries and not recooked fries. My point that I was trying to make was I have done that in the past but did not realize that was their practice and that it was really nasty. I will NEVER walk in their again and I will do ALL I can to make sure that anyone that I know that goes there stops. I'd just like to say that I see that Hecky's has a huge following. That is the reason I decided to try them. The first time we went the food was pretty good. My husband, my 10-year old son and I were pretty satisfied with the food for the price. That being said, my son asked if we could go again about a month after our first visit. We ordered the rib tips, corn on the cob, fries and drinks. We were all very disappointed with the food. To say it was bad would be an understatement. The rib tips were extremely greasy to the point they made us all sick. There was more fat than meat. The corn on the cob was so overcooked it was mushy, not to mention the foul taste and smell. It had a grey tinge to it. My son even suggested that the corn tasted and smelled like he was eating dirty socks. The fries were the best part of the meal, so I had my son eat the fries while I went in the kitchen and threw together a quick meal. We all got in bed past our bedtime because of this experience. Needless to say we will look for our next take-out barbecue elsewhere. I would just like to say that we are really disappointed that we had an experience bad enough to turn us off for good. I would suggest that anyone who decides to go, open your bag and check out the food before taking it all the way home, just in case! NOTE: I've been very honest and accurate in writing this review without over-exaggerating because my intention is to help people so I hope this review is helpful and I hope that others have a much better experience than we did. lots of hype, but the reality was incommensurate. to begin with, delivery service was uncooperative. i'd asked for a 5 minute warning call so i could be ready to meet driver. instead, driver and food sat around until i got to lobby. but the real disappointment was the food: rib tips were overwhelmed by unexceptional sauce; corn on cob must have been fished out of the garbage; gumbo and jambalaya were literally indistinguishable: no file or okra in the gumbo; too much broth in the jambalaya; greens were bland; i was given tasteless rice and beans instead of the baked beans that i'd ordered. cornbread was soggy and small. the bread pudding was good, but then again, it's hard to ruin bread pudding. most reviewers seem enamored, so i'll give them another try, but i'm not hopeful. it seems that they're coasting on their reputation. read more
