I have always been a fan of small local stores and a loyal customer of Hectors since they were on Payne Ave in North Tonawanda. I understand there is a salt shortage and they are trying to be fair... After 3 phone calls about a shipment they were receiving today, I was told to call back and talk to the manager. I work up the street from this location and asked for 1 bag to be set aside for me to be picked up on my lunch and was told "no that's not fair to everyone else"... The bag was for my 93yr old father, to keep his walkway clear when I take him to Roswell... I will never spend a penny in any of these stores again! Totally ridiculous! read more

Stopped in for a set of keys to be made for our house. The staff were friendly and helpful. We talked about the Super Bowl and who might win. My cost was under $7.00 but I got the fancy keys. My snowblower died last week mid-way through doing the driveway. I will admit I am an idiot and didn't check the oil at the beginning of the season and the engine seized up due to low oil. Grrrr My first thought was Home Depot or Lowes. I jumped in the truck to go buy a new one and thought... "what about Hectors?" which is right around the corner. I walked in and the owner was right there to help out. They didn't have the one I wanted in stock (they had just sold out) so they called their Maple Rd. store and they had a few. The price was right (no different than Lowes/HD), the customer service is excellent and they completely set up the snowblower with oil and gas. I put it in the back of my truck and it was ready to go. Yes, I did learn a lesson about not forgetting to check oil but Hectors was there to save the day. Shop local! I appreciate shopping with the local store instead of a large chain where I can't figure out where anything is without flagging someone down . Went to get my lawn mower fixed today and the kid behind the counter said they are behind and will be like 4 weeks. I said it's ok I'm not in a hurry. He then talks to someone in the corner who tells me it would be like 5 weeks and I said that would be fine. Then he tells me that's NOT ok with him because he doesn't have the room for it. After I say that this is a great way to do business he says ok bring it in. I DON'T THINK SO. Why don't you just tell me you don't want to do it and while your at it them take down your sign saying you repair lawn mowers and snow blowers! Trying to help local business and this is what I get. You will NEVER get any more business from me and keep it up and you won't have to worry about being too busy! read more

These guys have products and inventory you'd have to special order online especially for older homes! They KNOW what they're doing and explain simply if you need instruction. Always ready to help! It was the middle of the winter and my snowblower was about 6 years old and having problems for the first time. After hearing good things from neighbors, I brought it into Hector's on Harlem, dropped it off for the mechanic to take a look at, and after a few calls w the mechanic, he told me about 10 things that were wrong w the snowblower. Some minor and some more significant. The total repairs would have been approximately what a new snowblower would cost, so we decided to only complete the most critical repairs (ignoring a few of the "nice to haves") to at least keep the snowblower going for another season or two. I receive a call the afternoon before a large storm was coming and when I arrived to pick up the snowblower, ALL of the repairs had been done. The guys behind the counter were sympathetic to my situation, but basically said I had two options: - pay up (full amount) - leave the machine there until the next day when I could talk to the mechanic about the miscommunication After a few minutes of back and forth w the guys behind the counter and explaining that I didn't want to leave it since a storm was coming that night, they got in touch with the manager, and connected us on the phone. He couldn't have been ruder! Basically laughing at my predicament and saying belligerent things like I should just leave it overnight and the mechanic will reverse the work in the morning -- just really BAD customer service from the owner of the company. Because a storm was coming and I didn't want to shovel 12" of snow the next morning, I paid up, and the snowblower worked great. But, to be honest, Hector's has lost my business forever. I just felt like Hector's had me over a barrel and I felt completely taken advantage of. I firmly believe in supporting locally-owned businesses and I know they have a difficult time competing with the large corporates like Ace, Home Depot, and Lowe's, but that should not come at the expense of their customers! read more

I bought a toro lawnmower from Hectors Hardware. I used it every week the first summer, but at the end of that first summer it would not start. I checked and it was getting gas, and I always use STABIL so I knew the gas was OK, but when I checked for spark with a spark tester there was none. Since it was the end of the season I decided to wait to take it in for repair until spring instead. Normally I would do the repair myself, but since it was under warranty I took it back to the Hectors Hardware store where I bought it. When I picked the Mower up after it was repaired I was charged for the repair even though it was under warranty. They claimed that the reason the Mower would not start was because I had sour gas, which was not possible for three reasons: 1) the Mower started fine on the gas that was in the tank 5 days prior, 2) for many years I have ALWAYS put STABIL in my gas can before filling it, and I also know what sour gas looks and smells like so I knew that was not the problem. 3) I had checked it for spark and there was none. I asked what parts were replaced and was told that it did not need any parts and had plenty of spark, which I knew was not true because I had checked for spark the day it would not start. Even though they claimed that they did not replace any parts, when I checked my Mower there was a new spark module/coil installed on my Mower. They got me!!! They billed me for a non-existent fuel problem and they also billed Toro under the warranty for the new part they installed, WHICH THEY CLAIMED THEY DID NOT PUT ON!!! I understand that Hectors is having a hard time competing with the likes of Home Depot, Lowes, and Ace Hardware but lying and dishonesty are just plain unacceptable under ANY circumstances!!! I bought the Mower from Hectors even though it was a little more money because I believe in supporting locally owned businesses, but I will NEVER again spend one red cent in a Hectors Hardware store ever again!! Later that year when summer came to a close and I needed a new snowblower it was Home Depot, NOT Hectors Hardware, that I bought it from and when I need small incidentals that I normally would have bought from Hectors, I now buy them from either Ace Hardware or Home Depot. By cheating me and charging me for a covered warranty repair they lost my business FOREVER!! read more

When I go into Home Depot, Im completely overwhelmed. Most times I cant even find an associate for assistance. Hectors is completely different. The moment you walk through the door, someone asks what they can help you with. Im never in there longer than 5 minutes. On 9-13-15 I brought my snowblower in for a tune-up. The advertised price was $69.95. I was made to place $25.00 for deposit. A week later the mechanic calls and says it will cost $368.00 to repair and quickly says for another $100.00 or so you can get a new one, we are getting a shipment in next week. Ok I think it's a 12 year old machine. I go in on the 28th of September with every intent on buying a similar model. I speak to the manager about returning my deposit he says "that's for the estimate". I point out in the contract that no where does it say that. He replies well that should of being explained to you. A word of advice, do not buy anything larger than a paint brush or nut and bolts because they cant be trusted and lack integrity. read more
