Truly a magical spot a short hike from the road off Hwy 5. Easy to miss, we drove past and Waze Ap had us throw a U-turn. The drips of pine sap lion these ancient rocks look like sparking diamonds along the path. The sound of the stream and falls, then the slight mist and lower temperature as you approach is inviting. A must-stop on your drive through Northern California other than stopping for Weed. Remember: "Leaves of three, rub them on me" Right off the 5, there's a small picnic table, gazebo, drinking fountain (functional spring to fall) at the head of the trail that descends 160-200 feet down, crossing a small stream, past the highest concentration of poison oal in the area. Remember: "leaves of three, yum yummy" You'll hear the waterfall by the time you hit the switchback. The waterfall has a 30-35 foot plunge into a icy pool shallow enough to play in before it joins the Sacramento River. Because it's not huge or dangerous, you can actually pose next to it, dip your head into it, and hang out in the dark, shady, slippery rock cave behind the waterfall. I recommend going back up, especially if this was a pit stop on a road trip, but you can continue the hike, following Hedge Creek along the poison oak. Remember: "Leaves of three: make a tea" Allegedly there are more waterfalls if you pass the main waterfall and an observation deck looking down on the Sac River. Looking down, as in vantage point; not looking down on it for its historical elevated levels of mercury and arsenic from gold mining operations. If you want to get crazy, there's a rough and unofficial trail to the top of the falls. Option A: walk north from the parking lot about 75 yards and then cut through the trees to an obvious path. Option B: Climb about 35 feet up from the first switchback to get to that same path. From I-5 N exit Siskiyou and turn left. From I-5S., turn left. In both cases, turn right on Mott Rod and look for parking on the right. And remember, "Leaves of Three: Snack with Glee" read more

Hedge Creek Falls is a nice hike to stretch your legs and enjoy some shade on a warm day. It's not a must see destination or particularly scenic. It is, however, a nice local waterfall with a fairly easy and short trail. What stands out about it, is that you can walk behind the falls and get a unique perspective. I read on a placard near the parking that there's a project that's waiting on funding which will create a connector trail to Mossbrae Falls. Now that would be a worthwhile hike. It's pretty but not a must do in the area. I had already done a full day of hiking in the area so this was a nice, post dinner stroll. Free parking and right off the highway, make this an easy and quick nature stop. read more

This is a small but very pretty pit stop just off the 5. It was less than half a mile from my car to the main waterfall. The hike to the falls is very short, but also very steep, and technically tricky in a few places. I did see a few families with kids on the trail, but I would personally not bring a small child or child who loves to wander (unless you can carry them down a steep hill), because there are a lot of steep sharp turns with tall enough drop-offs to get injured. The first waterfall you come across is the main one, Hedge Creek Falls. You can see the whole waterfall from just down the trail. The top part of the waterfall is a single drop, then a double heart shaped drop, then the final drop, which you can actually walk behind. When I first arrived, there were a lot of people congregated near the main waterfall, waiting to take selfies. I kept walking past them to see what else was down the trail. There is an artificial waterfall created by a storm drain that is really pretty (even if it is fake) as well as a few small but pretty Cascades down the creek. As I was exploring this area, some people stopped me to ask me if I knew the way to Mossbrae, which I did not. Once you get down to the bottom of the trail by the river, there is a really unique and gorgeous view of Mt. Shasta. If you are in good enough shape to get down to Hedge Creek, the rest of the trail should be a breeze. It only took like twenty minutes to check the whole area out. read more

A very short and easy trail to the falls, the trail continues on to the Sacramento River and has a nice viewing platform to see the river and Mount Shasta. The day we were there the mountain was covered in clouds so no views of it and it started to rain lightly but the hike is mostly under tree canopy so it wasn't bad at all. You can make your way down to the river through the creek bed in the summer the water is low enough, but you will likely get your shoes wet and it can be slippery and difficult the last little bit. There is a steady stream of visitors walking to the falls and taking pictures but the trail is wide in parts so you can wait and get out of the way. read more

We've been coming up to Mount Shasta annually for about 15 years and never knew about this wonderful falls. Granted, it can't compare to McArthur-Burney Falls, but for the convenience, no admission charge, easy hike, and a refreshing waterfall, Hedge Creek Falls can't be beat. It's right off I-5 at exit 732, turn north onto Dunsmuir Ave and the parking area is right there on the right. Cross the road and the trail starts a little beyond a large drinking fountain. There are three or four switchbacks down to the falls. After the first switchback the road noise disappears and then all you can hear is water. The trail was shaded the entire way down to the falls, which is important on a hot sunny day. The falls are really cool (rather cold) as there is a cave behind the falls. It's easy to soak your hat to cool off. Many people braved the cold water and were splashing around the the pool at the bottom of the falls. If you find yourself in the Mount Shasta or Dunsmuir area, take some time to visit Hedge Creek Falls. read more

We did a waterfall sweep while staying up the area earlier this month. This is totally a family friendly hike, easily accessible, and pretty cool to be able to walk BEHIND a waterfall. Apparently this one goes all year long, obviously in wetter months the drop is more intense than in the summer but it was still flowing pretty good in early July. Parking is easy, just across the street. We walked to the end of the river and back up. This is actually super close to Mossbrae falls which is on private land and otherwise only accessible by railroad tracks. While we didn't do the connection to Mossbrae, I'm curious for next time because it is possible to cut out some of that railroad walk by going along the river it seems. Worth some exploring for sure! The river was pretty accessible as well, maybe 3/4 mile to the river from parking area, could be a fun afternoon floating and enjoying. Dunsmuir is a little wonderland for me. Really stunning land to enjoy and super glad we checked this beautiful spot off our list! read more

Followed by crossing the Sacramento river and reaching the unique Mossbrae Falls! The river was mid-calf to knee high and the rocks were slippery so be careful when crossing! My man surprised me with a quick little hike to see these falls. I didn't have an idea as to what or where we were going. Clearly I didn't expect to just pull of the road, park, walk down a trail and there are waterfalls. We brought the dog and it even in the tight places on the trail we could still get by easily even with a dog who doesn't understand boundaries. The day we came to visit it was hot outside. We put our feet in the water. I didn't get in the falls but plenty of hikers stuck their heads in to cool off. Its such a pretty place to visit and so easily accessible. I'm planning on bringing the whole crew of kids out to hike some more down the trail and see what else is going on this summer. read more

Cute little waterfall that's located right off of I-5 in the small town of Dunsmuir. The hike to the falls roundtrip is less than a mile and super easy. It's more of a walk than a hike to be honest. I visited the falls this past summer, and they weren't flourishing like how I'd seen them in pictures, but it was still a nice little experience. You can actually walk right behind the falls and continue on the trail. The trail will take you all the way down to the Sacramento River. The views of the river are absolutely stunning! There's a nice little vista point right before you make it down where you can look down at the river from up above. I honestly enjoyed this more than the actual waterfall. The trail to the river also serves as a shortcut to Mossbrae Falls, but you'll have to cross the river to get to the other side. Just a fair warning; this ain't no easy river crossing. First of all, the water was ice freakin' cold in the summer. The rocks are extremely jagged and slippery and the river gets waist deep in some sections. I would highly, HIGHLY recommend that you bring some water shoes and even a hiking stick or two for balancing if you're going to attempt the crossing. The river crossing was an impromptu event for me, and I crossed barefoot to avoid hiking the rest of the day in wet socks and shoes. My feet were literally on fire afterward. It was so damn painful and a slow and steady process the entire way. Plus, I (along with every other person who crossed) kept slipping on the rocks. I actually witnessed like 3 people fall in the water. So yeah... there's that. It's doable, but just come prepared. Parking is super easy as there's a small parking lot right across the street from the start of the trailhead. I believe that there are also restrooms near the parking lot, but don't quote me on that (I didn't actually use it while I was there). This is a fun place to stop if you're exploring waterfalls in the area or even just as a little break from the road if you're heading up north. If you're visiting Hedge Creek Falls, I'd recommend a visit to Mossbrae Falls too. If you don't want to cross the river to get to Mossbrae Falls, the trailhead is only a few more minutes by car up the road (a walking trail along active train tracks, so be careful). read more

This is a great way to break up your drive, I highly recommend stopping here. The parking lot is right next to the highway, and the waterfall is only about a 5 minute walk from the parking lot. If you follow the trail a bit past the waterfall it will lead you down to the river - there's a nice platform to overlook the river, or you can walk down a bit further and brave the rocks to sit on the riverbank. It's a really quiet, peaceful dose of nature. FYI - there aren't any bathrooms, just some sketchy port-a-potties. read more

Signs on I-5 denote the exit. The dirt parking lot is at the freeway exit - marked by a crosswalk and portable toilet. If driving a low clearance vehicle, be careful of the bump when parking. A drinking fountain is at the trailhead. Freeway close, toilet, and fresh water make the falls a perfect trifecta for a rest stop when driving through northern California. And oh yeah, the falls aren't bad either. The light water flow of the falls created a shower head spray. What the falls lacks in beauty is overcome by two unique features. Visitors can walk behind the falls without getting wet. The falls drop over hexagonal basalt columns that have eroded - exposing their geometric pattern. Don't look up because it appears like more columns are about to break off. Short 0.35 mile walk to the falls. The trail continues to an observation deck that overlooks the Upper Sacramento River with some tree obstructions and then down to the riverbank. read more

This a MUST see waterfall, if you're in the area of Dunsmuir, California. It's a very short, gentle hike to the falls, mostly in the shade too!!! Upon reaching the falls, you'll realize that you can actually walk underneath the falls. How cool is that... The fall makes a great photo opportunity for you and your loved ones. If you continue on the trail a little bit longer, you'll approach a viewing platform. There you'll be able to take photos of the Sacramento river and Mt Shasta. Very peaceful... At the beginning of the trail, there is a continously running water fountain. The water is some of best and purest water we have ever drank in our lives. Short and easy hike down to the waterfall. There's plenty of street parking and even a porta-potty along the road (though not much shade). The trailhead is easy to find and there's also a shaded pergola with seating for a little post-hike rest stop. It took us about 10 minutes to get down to the waterfall where we were greeted to a refreshing drizzle and mist from the water coming down. You can tell it used to be a much bigger waterfall from the curvature of the rock! If you continue down the trail, it leads to the Sacramento River where you can find people fly fishing and just enjoying the cool flowing water at the bank of the river. read more

Not a huge waterfall, not the most amazing but it's very nice and if you're into nature, it's a great spot to hit. ***If you're ready for a fun little adventure, keep following the trail down under Hedgecreek Falls and out the other side. Keep going and it will take you to a river which is another beautiful spot to chill. ***Down for an extended adventure?? Cross the river and go up the hill where you'll find railroad tracks. Follow the railroad tracks to the right. This has a very Stand By Me feel to it, there's even a bridge to cross on the tracks. *Be careful these are active tracks* Eventually you'll come to a sign on the right side where you'll go back down the hill and find Mossbrae Falls. AMAZING and well worth the adventure!!! I highly recommend doing this. Parts of the river crossing are deep so be prepared to get wet. Also bring some food for a snack or picnic. read more

What a hidden gem!! I saw it on a flier at the hotel and the snowmobile operator told us to check it out. Very quick 5 minute hike with a bit of elevation loss and switchback. Tons of parking by the road. I think you can hike farther and follow the river but we didn't. The waterfall isn't the biggest but it's unique since you can walk behind it. I put my hand under and clothes got a bit wet. Rare to be able to get this close to a waterfall so safely and without having to get completely soaked. Would recommend anyone with just 10 minutes to spare to stop by if you're around this area of I-5. You can even stop by the Dunsmuir downtown for a quick bite and drinks. Oh and to make it even more appealing it was completely free and not too well traveled - very serene. read more

I think this may have been a little more impressive at a wetter time of year. (We came during the fall season before any rain) It's a very short little descent down to the waterfall and there's a big sign shaped like a train indicating where the waterfall trail is. From the reviews and some great photography online I was under the assumption that I had to walk into a cave to see the waterfall but it flows out over a large overhang that seems somewhat cave like. Still a beautiful waterfall either way. There's also a decent amount of parking which was really nice. If you're here, go and see Mossbrae Falls also (it's two minutes down the road) ! It says restricted access but there will be many other people making the trek to see the falls too! read more
