Was a great spot to take a break and stretch legs while traveling. Access and parking for oversized and towing rigs. Lots of shady people or people not caring about the park rules. Didn't stay long but great place to stretch legs and use the restroom. read more

We took a trip from Redding to Shasta to have lunch and wanted to check out where the Sacramento River begins and I must say it's definitely a must to see if you're driving in the area if that's something that interests you. Whether you are visiting Shasta and the surrounding are or simply driving through, this park is worth the visit because in it resides "Headwaters" the beginning of the Sacramento River, a water source of so much of California's residents, farming community, and industrial complex. The park is beautiful and sitting there watching the pure clean water pour out of the side of a hill feeding a stream that will become magnificent river, was a little inspiring to say the least. The water was and is ice cold and refreshing. The park itself offers a great grassy area lined with beautiful tall pine trees, restrooms, a picnic area, and a information center. read more

It's beautiful, and the headwaters are a sacred place. Sometimes, events are held there. The lower large is the ecstatic dance hall. The upper lodge hosts senior Café lunches. At least I believe it does. Seniors, please double check! Some people have complained about homeless people being present there. Sometimes there is a drum circle. Happy to report the bathrooms are open, post pandemic. At least the last time I needed the bathroom there. read more

My conference meets here at upper and lower lodges. The forest is beautiful to be in walking from our cars to the lodge. The air smells sweet! I have come here now for three years in a row. read more

This is such a beautiful park and was so close to our Airbnb. Everybody comes here to drink the Headwaters and, apparently, fill up as many jugs and bottles as they possibly can with the water. I tried the water despite the warning signs and it tasted so clean, cold and refreshing. They say it comes from deep in the Earth and has healing properties. We also walked on some of the trails in the park, so beautiful, calm and relaxing (until you walk on the trails close to hwy 5) but even that didn't ruin it. Definitely would be a great place to bring a picnic and explore for a few hours. read more

Headwaters of Sacramento River!!! Wow, this place is amazing. Every time we visit the town, we fill up our water jugs from here. The water is clean. The place is very peaceful. There are a few hiking trails that you can go into the woods. There is also a small area for kids to play. Must visit!!! read more

We came here on the summer and it was a great place to spend a few hours. Watching so many people fill up on water was fascinating! There was a line of people with all sizes of containers getting water to take home for the week! Great little trails within the park and small bridges to cross over the water. There is an old school playground there with metal playground equipment. My kids loved playing on this and exploring the park! We will be back! read more

The park at Mt. Shasta City Park is not all that, but it's home to the headwaters of the Sacramento River, which in itself is worth a hearty 5-stars. Sitting just off Nixon Road (which runs right off of Mt. Shasta Road at the north end of town), this little park is home to a fantastic beginning. From the side of a nondescript little hill near the majestic Mt. Shasta, a stream flows forth... simply a meager beginning to what a few miles down the road is a massive meandering river. The "healing waters" of Shasta simply pour right out of the ground... not a spring, but a creek that just runs out of the side of the mountain. You're saying to yourself "ok, I've seen bigger and better... what about the Metolius in Oregon? That shit is a fucking RIVER that flows out of a hill!" Well, here's the difference. You can walk over, dip your water bottle into the gushing, ice-cold water spout, fill it up, and enjoy some of the freshest, sweetest, cleanest volcanic-rock-filtered water you'll ever have. This is pure, high-quality H20. Unadulterated, unpolluted, and fantastic. Volvic doesn't have shit on this water. Ever since I was introduced to this phenomenal piece of geology and hydrology by my in-laws a few years ago, I make it a point to stop in Shasta every time I drive by and fill up on water so incredible that you cannot purchase its equal in any store. It's worth the 15 minutes off the road. And if you listen to the locals, they'll even spin you a yarn about Lemurians and Shasta and how this magical water will heal what ails ya. Whether or not you believe it, this is some good water. And when you do stop, take a photo (or at least a mental one) and then when you get down towards Sacramento, just a few hours down the road, take a good look at the Sacramento river... You'll be amazed. read more

Great park and really cool to see the headwaters if the Sacramento River. It was a shame there was a large group of alternative lifestyle folks smoking pot regardless of the smoke free sign at the park and wildfire danger in our state right now. I wouldn't have minded much except we had our two small children with us and they didn't need to see that. read more

Loved it! We stopped in Mount Shasta on our way to our family cabin. We ate at the original Black Bear Diner and while my husband did the shopping for a trip at Rey's, I took the kids to this wonderful park. Lots to explore. Great hike thru the woods and over bridges. We are sure to make it a regular stop on our way each year. read more

I love this park so much!! It's gorgeous, clean and the water from the Sacramento headwaters is ridiculously tasty and crisp. We always load up on it when we pass through. There's usually very friendly people making music or having picnics. No wonder people consider this place sacred, it feels so serene. There's even a little box of incense that anyone is free to take and use. read more

Nice to see so many enjoying this spot. I've been hep to this stop for so many years. I start saving gallon jugs a coupla weeks aheada time so I can get 5 to 10 gallons to go. Now I live in Portland, which has GREAT water from it's own "Bull Run" watershed (Think "Hetch-Hetchy" without a destroyed natural wonder). But even if I am headed North I stop for Shasta water. On the way SOUTH, it is a necessity! After I get to LA I drink the Shasta stuff for weeks after my arrival. Besides the great water, the Park's atmosphere is such a pleasant rest stop. The fresh air is almost as rejuvenating as the water. About the only down side to this stop is working your way through the spaced out looking kids you see at "Reggae on the River" stumbling around asking for handouts (and the Ubber Spiritual Europeans) while you try to get to the water. Signs ask you to please not wash yourself in the direct source of the Sacramento, but there always seems to be some hairy armpitted Lady of the Mountains scrubbing her feet right where you wish to fill bottles. At any rate, you just have to strong arm your way through the oft times chanting minnions of Cosmicity and hope they return to Sedona, AZ to await their Spaceship, but suddenly there it is. The water pours from a group of Lava tubes from somewhere below the great Mountain to your East. They say it takes a hundred years from snowflake to water gushing into your bottles and I guess Hydrologists know this kind of thing. However long it takes, the water is gushing so cold that your hands are numb by the time your bottles are full. It used to be that you could stop for a few minutes, fill your bottles and load 'em into your rig. Now-a-days, the little parking niche will have a Cosmic Vehicle of some type permanently berthed there so you have to park way over by the playground and carry everything. Whatever happened when "Rudeness" became "Hip"??? Back when "I" was a "Hippie", we always tried to further our image by being COURTEOUS. Whatever, apparently it is a lost art. Or maybe the Space Brothers soon to land have raised "Rudeness" to Religion status... ~Putting away my Soapbox~ Whatever the state of the Park, it is still a great stop, well worth the effort, and I have met some really GREAT Folk there too. Now that I am a "Senior" I have been curious to stop in at the "Senior Center" there at the park. I have a hunch I may gather some GREAT annecdotes there. STOP PILGRIM!! Yer gunna like this place!! Dally through town a bit and stop at the great Healthfood Market "Berryvale" for food and snacks .. The BEST picture of Mount Shasta is looking North up the main street of "McCloud", a few short minutes East off the "FIVE" toward Reno. Takes a few minutes, but its a fabulous shot... read more

We go there about once every two weeks to fill up our water bottles from the head waters. We can't let the kids out of the car to play because every time we have gone there, we have seen people getting high, smoking pot, out in the open as if it were normal everyday behavior. Even if it were legal for recreational use, which it is not, it would not be right to smoke it around little children in public play areas IMO. Unless local law enforcement does a better job of enforcing laws concerning public intoxication, it would not be a place I could recommend for families with children. read more

I have never seen such a beautiful park right in themiddle of town. PeoplelivinginShasta indeed have a gem here. The park is clean and you can see the headwaters of the sacramento river here.It is an awesome sight to behold. I just have not seen anythinglike it. nor have I seen a town as breathtaking as Mt. Shasta. Make a trip this year. I think you will be glad you did. read more
