    Sacramento River headwaters.
    Eric B.

We took a trip from Redding to Shasta to have lunch and wanted to check out where the Sacramento River begins and I must say it's definitely a must to see if you're driving in the area if that's something that interests you. It starts at Shasta city park so it's a win win! I definitely recommend you guys check it out and maybe snap a couple pics and some video. Happy new year fam!

Whether you are visiting Shasta and the surrounding are or simply driving through, this park is worth the visit because in it resides "Headwaters" the beginning of the Sacramento River, a water source of so much of California's residents, farming community, and industrial complex. The park is beautiful and sitting there watching the pure clean water pour out of the side of a hill feeding a stream that will become magnificent river, was a little inspiring to say the least. The water was and is ice cold and refreshing. The park itself offers a great grassy area lined with beautiful tall pine trees, restrooms, a picnic area, and a information center.

Beautiful place in Mt.Shasta! I enjoy the 45 min drive from Redding because I know that I'll be bringing back delicious water from Headwaters. Grab a snack and spend time outdoors...you will not be disappointed! Plenty of parking and tables to eat on.

This is such a beautiful park and was so close to our Airbnb. Everybody comes here to drink the Headwaters and, apparently, fill up as many jugs and bottles as they possibly can with the water. I tried the water despite the warning signs and it tasted so clean, cold and refreshing. They say it comes from deep in the Earth and has healing properties. We also walked on some of the trails in the park, so beautiful, calm and relaxing (until you walk on the trails close to hwy 5) but even that didn't ruin it. Definitely would be a great place to bring a picnic and explore for a few hours.

Such fun to come collect fresh water from the headwaters of the Sacramento River. So many people coming and going. One family collected a dozen 5 gallon water bottles while we were there.

Left: Perfect hydration (alkaline water) middle: water from shasta city park. Right: coin machine water.

The water is truly awesome. Took a few bottles home and tested it. It was literally as alkaline as the alkaline water I buy at Sprouts or Costco

This park is a "must-see' when you are in the Mt. Shasta area. You will want to walk the trail on the other side of the river. I uploaded some photos I took during autumn. The trail isn't very long but the plants and trees are spectacular.

As a Sacramento native I always wondered where sac river originated from.....now I know!!

It's a beautiful place to access the 50-year-old water spring. A lot of people come here to fill their water containers.

Have to experience drinking water right from the head waters. Carbon dated 50 years. Purest, best tasting water you will ever taste.

The second visit was to hike the trail along the lake. For the beach time, it was a week day and it too crowded. I was able to snag a bench near the resort's public beach and enjoy the iconic views of Mt Shasta. As for the lakeside trail, it goes all the way around and is approximately 7 miles. I was short on time, so did a 3 mile out and back. Along the way, there are forested paths, Mt Shasta views and meadows to enjoy. The trail wasn't well signed and I lost it at some points. Since I was only doing a small section of it, I just followed the lakeshore best I could on my out and back. Early morning, it was a peaceful place. I'd love to come back and see about kayaking the lake or doing the entire trail. Lovely spot and a nice way to unwind near Shasta

Poor security multiple fights, violent public intoxication, and overly roudy campsites, that necessitated a heavy sheriff's presence. This year has been the worst experience ever. They don't have enough staff for safety, maintenance, cleaning, the store, or the registration/reservation desk. I spoke with Julie, the manager. She said they have been having a lot of trouble keeping people employed during this crazy time. Paired with that, the whole park is at MAXIMUM CAPACITY. I completely understand keeping staff right now is beyond their control but why would they continue to book out the ENTIRE park!! They are increasing their profit margins at my expense and awful experience. I'm the one paying the same price I always do for a dirty, unsafe for families, subpar tent and cabin maintenance. We made the best of it by exploring McCloud, and parts of the lake outside of the park. Basically stayed away except to sleep. Please see attached pics.  The toilet was like this going on 3 days. Garbage going on 2 days. Stopped overflowing because there was no more soap or paper towels. Bloody feminine products hanging out of the receptacle. Fire pit upon arrival. (I asked nicely upon online reservation to have trash and fire pit clean upon check in because it was my experience during 5 night cabin stay 4 week prior)
