Very poor garbage and recycling service. Their bills never include which month: it's just their useless substandard software billing in advance with two months of service. Upon calling, **they demand you pay a month in advance for garbage.** When City of Portland reduced garbage pick up to twice a month...Heiberg saved a ton of money. Always dinging my account with late fees when, in fact, their bills are for advance payment. Totally fed up with them and have complained to city of Portland recycling and gotten nowhere. read more

On March 18, 2024, a Heiberg garbage truck destroyed the apron of our driveway. Bruce Heiberg has repeatedly denied all responsibility for the damage of $4,500. I took pictures immediately. The damage has continue to erode. Small claims court is one option. We are in our 8th decade. Court seems like a reach. Bruce H has been nothing but hostile about the repair. He deemed the driveway old, therefore not his issue. My response was if the driver hit our very OLD dog, would that also be not his issue? The driveway is still crumbling. The most difficult garbage collection service I've ever dealt with. Our driver is the trash man equivalent of the Seinfeld Soup Nazi, bringing negative vibes and a confrontational demeanor to the neighborhood as he glowers and gestures at us, routinely sifting through our recycling to try to find that ONE item that doesn't belong, so that he can self-righteously reject the entire pickup. We moved from a city that sorted paper from plastic and have thus been confused on a couple occasions, as well as have had random passersby put non-viable items in our bin, but we are by no means the congenital polluters that this high priest of trash treats us like. read more

On June 30th , the Uber I was riding in was T boned by a car who ran a red light at a good rate of speed and whose driver and passengers then proceeded to flee the scene on foot. Employee "Buck" who was on his morning route , took the time out to pull over , come to the scene , checked on me and my Uber driver, offered help, gave us his name and name of company so we could retrieve film footage from his truck cam. He was the most helpful witness. Kudos to Buck for being a Good Samaritan and owner Joseph for helping us with footage. WARNING: HEIBERG DEFENDS THEIR EMPLOYEES WHEN PRESENTED WITH VIDEO FOOTAGE OF A THEFT, AND THEN TREATS THE CUSTOMER LIKE THEY DID SOMETHING WRONG..... THE EMPLOYEE LET SOMEONE THROUGH OUR GATE AND OVER $1500 OF TOOLS WERE TAKEN FROM OUR BUSINESS!!! NOTE: THIS IS STILL PENDING INVESTIGATION SO ALL CLAIMS ARE "ALLEGED" AND HAVE NOT BEEN PROSECUTED AT THIS TIME. STORY: we are a small business owner who signed up with Heiberg for garbage service when we moved into our new building. the garbage company runs very odd hours and said they needed to come at 5:30am, so reluctantly but not giving it too much thought, we gave them our gate code. several months went by fine, until we caught their employee letting someone through our gate as he was leaving, and our work trucks were broken into about $1500 worth of tools were taken. this was caught by multiple cameras, multiple systems, full video time stamped, and also on our Ring system. One of the owners, Jimmy, who "handled" the situation was so unprofessional and was beyond insulting, demanding they come to our office to view the tape, and treated us with hostility, accusing us of making up the whole story....when it took some time to figure out how to tape the video of the video and send it...but instead of apologizing and asking how they can fix the issue and give us a new driver, they told us that they couldn't find anyone to take over the route, because they don't work past 8am. yes, i said 8am. they went on to say that if i didn't like it, that i could take my business elsewhere. ARE YOU SERIOUS?? its like a slap in the face, we were wronged and never asked them for anything except a new driver during normal hours. i have nothing to gain by posting this except a tale of caution. i sent the video to this company for all 3 email contacts i had, showing footage of their guy, who collaborated with an accomplice and over $1500 of our tools were taken.......AND THEY NEVER EVEN ACKNOWLEGED THE VIDEO. never even so much as said, "we will review" or "I'm sorry that happened" it was shocking to me as a business owner myself. so if you want a company who treats there customers as described above than hire these guys. we are very happy with our new garbage provider at waste management who simply picks up garbage from our facility during normal working hours. so simple. it should truly be that easy. Horrible customer service!!! Did not pick up my garbage and would not refund my money!!! Hired a house sitter while on vacation just to put my monthly garbage can out for pick up. They did not pick up my garbage saying the can was not out. I called to get the matter resolved; either credit my account or pick up my garbage. The best they could do was to pick up on next route one week out. This is six weeks with no garbage pick up in the summer while my current overflowing can wrenches a sour smell in the 90 degree heat attracting all the nearby city raccoons. The lady on the phone was rude and hung up on me. This is how they treat their 10 year paying customers. Don't give these people your time, money or service. You are much better off using another garbage and recycling company. read more

I've been using Heiberg's commercial drop boxes (garbage, yard debris) for decades. It's a family owned business that's been in the Portland community for generations. They've always been fast and reliable. The last box I had out for a rental had to be dropped right between two trees- a very tight spot. They deliver what they say they will, on time (in my case, new glass bins, a larger can when ordered, and a dumpster for a major clean out), and their prices are reasonable too. Horrible customer service. Thank God, I do not have to use this place for my garbage service. Service was for my father-in-laws estate (my husband was basically told we HAD to use this company for a drop box as they have kicked the other company we were going to use out of the neighborhood). Watch your kids and pets on the mornings when pickups occur in your neighborhood. Many (not all) drivers for this company are focused solely on quick completion of their routes, accelerating at high speed between houses without regard for safety. In the Sellwood-Moreland area some drivers will run stop signs. Over the years, repeated calls to the business begging for driver safety has been to no avail in behavior change. Sadly I expect a tragedy - it is only a matter of time. ADDITION: May-01. Over the past week, I have noticed a big change in driver behavior in our neighborhoods, and am pleased with the manager's response indicating that my concerns are a priority and would be addressed. These people are mean and they're so loud that it wakes me every week. I sometimes forget to put my garbage out and if I asked them to give me an extra pick up they gave me a lecture. I had Heiberg from 2000-2003 at my first home on NE 68th. Fine and dandy. Moved other places, and 2 years ago moved back into their service area into a duplex rental. 3-4 times in the last 12 months (not including snow and ice service interruptions, which are completely valid) the garbage driver has just randomly not picked up the garbage. It's a roll can, located 3 feet from the curb. My adjoining neighbors are 2 adults and 2 kids in a 650sf apt, one still in diapers. 2 weeks is a stretch, but when the driver for reasons unknown elects to just skip it (the recycling driver seems to do fine) it gets RIDICULOUS. I'm tired of having to call about this. And even after taking the time to call, it may take DAYS to get picked up. Why? Your fail, your job to fix. Garbage haulers do about 60 seconds of work per property. We pay an effective rate of about $300/hr monthly. Attorneys make less, and are held to a standard of integrity and ethics - why not Heiberg? read more

If we had a choice, we would not use this company. They purchased Cloudburst Recycling a few years ago and service has gone downhill since. The drivers are courteous but the customer service is absolutely horrible. When I called to report missed service (and this is not infrequent in our neighborhood) we were told they could come out 5 days later for a fee. The woman was extremely rude and did not care in the slightest. What an amazing difference a trash company can make. We were using Waste Management as a commercial customer. The contracts, customer service, was terrible. Monthly I was having to call, because the driver had some excuse to not show up. The bill had no problem coming though! I called and spoke to Jesse at Heiberg. She was amazing. I discovered they were a family business also. (Which matters to me) Jesse set us up at half the price of Waste Management & what Arrow Waste services bid us at. Without the slippery contracts the other guys make you sign. (And force you to auto renew) No container "rental", "drop off", or "pick up" fees. No hidden fuel surcharge fees. Just straight pricing. Horrible customer service. Garbage overflowing on a non-pick up week and was told the city prohibited them from coming into my neighborhood on an off week. When I mentioned that literally one street over is scheduled for trash pick up, they repeated the same b.s. response. Always great and courteous and out of all the residential companies I've been forced to use due to city contracts this is the ONE company where I've seen the drivers get out of their trucks to pick up trash that didn't make it in their truck every time! Won't mention the others i've been forced to use, and they all dump trash what seems like every where but the truck and if I call they come fix it but they definitely don't match Heiberg. Very very shady company. Randomly decide if you have extra bags in your can and assign a price to it at there arbitrary determination of a bag of trash. Been customers oh Leihl disposal since 1996 and after the switch to this company the customer service is terrible. I agree with other reviews. Our company had business account and did not pay late but they keep charging late fee and charge late fees over late fees. My company is not going to pay this ridiculous fees. We send letter to open dispute, they do not care the discrepancy and never respond. Do not ever pay late fees on late fees. Late fees on late fees is illegal. We switch to another recycling company and do not use them anymore. We definitely do not recommend. read more

Heiberg Garbage & Recycling has very poor customer service. They changed our garbage day without telling us. When I called to complain, they said that they were a small company and couldn't email all of their clients but that it was listed on their website. They also told me that they would have to charge me to come and get the recycling that they never picked up. Now I am left with overflowing barrels and need to wait another week. They never take responsibility for their actions. They broke a basketball hoop at my home and vehemently denied it, even though we saw them do it. Unfortunately, we are stuck with them. And I was told that they are there to help us. They are not. They are there to collect money. When they don't pick up during snow days, they still charge you. Awful company. The woman who answers the phone shouldn't be dealing with customers. She must be a relative or she would be fired. read more
