So back to Uptown. It used to be run by an older French guy who gave lousy haircuts, but it was close and cheap. Then it was bought up by some younger folks who are pretty friendly. Like I said, the haircuts are ok (I've walked out a couple of times saying to myself "it's ok it'll grow out in a week or two"). Consistency seems to be an issue here. I've had great cuts from them and not so great cuts. Another issue here is the wait time. It always seems to be packed, which is no fault of their own, but more often than not I've walked away, not wanting to waste time on my weekend waiting for a trim.

The barbers are all super friendly and get my cut right every time. The music is always different, which can be a little off-putting for some, but I appreciate the diversity. It seems they've become victims of their own success and the first-come-first-served line can get a little hectic, but grab a coffee close by and bring a book and enjoy a classic east van barbershop experience.
