It all started on a smoky, 87 degree Saturday in July when our camping plans got a rain check and we were open for a good time. Big Mini Putt Club was initially discussed but nixed because we weren't feeling the downtown vibe or $12 a person/9 holes. Then, we looked up AJ's mini golf but they had a private event scheduled. Yelp suggested Double Dip and after one ring, the employee on the telephone sold us with $3.50/person for 18 holes and recommended we come before 7p (thanks for the tip!). We parked, watched the first half of England vs. France at Walker Roadhouse and walked right over to the Depot. The course was perfect (no waiting around and lots of shade) for our 4 year old who got her first hole in one on the 15th! The ice cream/cone of ice came out quick (no line either) at 6:30p and we had our choice of picnic tables with umbrellas to enjoy. Overall, great family date night! We rarely frequent the west side, besides for the zoo, but will have to plan another trip before the summer ends. I've also had some random texture issues with some flurries. One time my wife had the drumstick flurry and I don't know what happened, but the texture became super grainy and almost like the ice cream was curdling/separating. There is almost always a line in the evening and on weekends, but it does tend to more quickly. It's a time to chit chat and gives you plenty of time to check out the extensive menu. I love that it's dog friendly so pals can bring their babes or I get to see other people's dogs! They don't have a ton of seating, but it's not generally presented as an issue. I've had many chocolate milkshakes, and they have been fine. The dark chocolate milkshake at Love's tastes like actual chocolate, though, and it is supremely satisfying. It almost makes me forget that I don't like ice cream! Love's has lots of other ice cream and gelato offerings, including vegan ice cream, plus chocolates and peanut brittle and things like that. Huddy's opened in the spring of 2026, by local owners Matt VanWoerkom, Alex VanOverloop, and Tyler Doezema. The shop was very nicely decorated with murals and pictures and old nostalgic photos of Hudsonville, Hudsonville Ice Cream, and dairy cows. It's clean, bright and fresh. It was well-staffed with youngsters from several different area high schools, providing prompt and cheerful service. Can't go wrong with Hudsonville Ice Cream *in* Hudsonville, both soft-serve and hard. They offer all the usual treats: cones, milkshakes, floats, sundaes, specialty sundaes, dog delights... Plus a few twists like brownie sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, and three "Founders' Favorites" which I assume are the owners' chosen dishes, e.g. "The Woerks" (heh) with cake batter hard ice cream, Oreo pieces and caramel. I didn't really notice the indoor seating because we quickly took our ice cream to the plentiful blue tables on the outdoor deck. It was a nice ambience overlooking a brick-paved alley street and several businesses. I did not ask anyone this but my feeling was that Hudsonville is working to develop this area into a pedestrian zone or common area. Why am I rating Huddy's four stars instead of five? 1. They did not have sugar cones, which are my favorite--only cake and waffle cones. I'm not sure if they were out of stock, or trying to nudge customers to pay extra for waffle cones. 2. The turtle sundae had too high a ratio of syrup (hot fudge and caramel) to ice cream. So was left with lots of delicious goo but no more ice cream to enjoy with it. TIP: Huddy's is basically on Chicago Drive in the center of town, but it's not directly facing the street. You turn off Chicago Drive into Plaza Drive, and then the front entrance faces a parking lot, with the shop sitting along the brick-paved "alley street" I mentioned.
