Sea monster single scoop at Heights Cream

It's the summer of ice cream for me, and Heights Cream hit the spot! Some friends and I had lunch at the Old Goat down the street recently before heading to Garfield Park for disc golf. While at lunch I remembered hearing about this new spot opening up and checked out their Yelp page - sure enough, they were just down the block and open that day! We all made a plan to stop by there after disc golf. There's plenty of parking in the back parking lot. Heights Cream is actually a walk up window in the front of the hardware store. They serve Mooville ice cream, which is a brand I don't see that often at local places (usually it's Hudsonville). I was excited to see a flavor I'd never had - Sea Monster! It's sea salt caramel ice cream with cookie dough and Oreos mixed in. Um, yes please. I got a single scoop in a cup for just over $3. The portion was very generous for this price - I think they have some of the lowest prices I've seen so far in my summer of ice cream. Nate got the almond joy - coconut ice cream with coconut flakes, almond pieces, and chocolate chunks. We liked them both but the sea monster was the clear winner, with lots of chunks of cookie dough and a delicious, buttery caramel flavor. I'd get this again! They also serve dairy free ice cream in any of their specialties for 50 cents more, which is a nice option. Other menu items include an ice cream flight(!!) with sample scoops of 5 different flavors, flurries, soft serve, shakes, sundaes, floats, and slushies. You can get pup cups for your dog too! This might be my new favorite ice cream place in town. I'll be back and crossing my fingers they have the sea monster next time I'm there.

One of the biggest reasons we look forward to summer is because Heights Cream opens again! This literal hole-in-the-wall in Alger Heights has a wonderful variety of ice creams, but our favorite is the flurries. Choose chocolate or vanilla ice cream and whatever toppings you want, and they mix it up for you! And it's pretty quick to get your ice cream too, but it depends on how long the line is. If you also enjoy flurries, my pro recommendation is to visit in September, when they have a special pumpkin cheesecake flurry. It's simply to die for!

Every city needs a Captain Sundae. Been going here since I was a little tyke and every experience…read morehas been memorable! Packed with nostalgia, this parlor never fails to bring their A-stuff day in and day out. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, and you DEFINITELY can't beat the value. Great portions for great prices. Parents, do your kids a favor and come here after a day at the beach. You won't regret it!

They have a lot of unique sundae options, which made it surprisingly difficult to choose. I ended up getting the Peanut Butter Shipwreck with vanilla ice cream, and it was delicious. The ice cream-to-topping ratio was perfect, and the combination of hot fudge and cold ice cream brought everything together really well. It was also very reasonably priced for the portion size. My only critique is that I expected it to be made with hard ice cream rather than soft serve. That said, the soft serve was still very good. It does melt pretty quickly, though, so don't wait too long before digging in. There's plenty of outdoor seating, and they even have a mini golf course in the back. The whole place has a fun, laid-back atmosphere and is a great spot to hang out with family and friends. Their soft serve cones also looked incredibly good and picture-worthy, so I'll definitely be trying one of those the next time I visit.
