Agatha Kitchen Bar - Chicken Marsala with pureed potatoes

I started with Robert's Margarita, a delicious and colorful take on the drink. One of the house specialties is the Chicken Marsala, which I accompanied with pureed potatoes and grilled vegetables. Naan is also good. Simply fantastic flavors in everything. The dessert was phenomenal. A dark chocolate brownie with a caramel sauce and topped with hazelnut ice cream. Again, the combination of textures and flavors will guarantee a clean plate. Agatha's reminds me of some of the better places in Palm Springs, CA. Their cuisine truly sets them apart from restaurants anywhere.

Also the warm beet (betabel) salad with goat cheese and pistachios - fabulous! I don't remember it being warm before, but it was great. The only disappointment was the Camarones Crunchy, which was small chewy shrimp, not crunchy at all, on top of a creamy base. We told the server we had been brought the wrong dish, as the shrimp weren't crunchy. She said, no, that's the dish. A manager came over and said that yes, that was the crunchy shrimp dish. Unbelievable. They did finally take the dish off the bill, but we were disappointed that we didn't get a good shrimp dish. The Robert's Margarita was excellent as usual.

La Nueva Michoacana - Nice people and good ice cream on an outside corner of the Mercado Pino Suárez

Nothing suits so well as ice cream on a hot and sultry Mazatlán afternoon…read more An ice-cold Mexican Coke might do in a pinch, but when the heat's on, when you need something sweet and refreshing to make the day "soportable", that's where La Nueva Michoacana comes in. Located on a busy outside corner of the Mercado Pino Suárez - itself a block-square structure packed with stalls selling everything but frozen treats - La Nueva Michoacana sticks to its knitting, offering sorbets and ice cream - mamey and guava are excellent choices - and paletas, in flavors that include two of my favorites: grosella (red currant) and limón con chile. And for the tired shopper - the store is located amid Mazatlán's Centro district, where much shopping is to be found - La Nueva Michoacana provides chairs, positioned between two open doors to catch the breeze, and graciously allows non-customers to rest themselves. Such hospitality can lead people to be hospitable. I recently walked into the shop, bought a treat, and sat my large self in the last available seat, a plastic lawn chair that objected to what was happening. The man sitting next to me quickly offered the wrought iron seat he occupied. I agreed, and when we'd swapped and settled, I asked, "Were you afraid my chair was going to explode?" "Yes," he said, with a chuckle and a grin. Grateful for his generosity, I offered the man, whose name was Salvador, half of the pan de elote I'd purchased inside the mercado. He took it, and as we ate, we agreed that such abuela food is getting harder to find in public, and is thus doubly gratifying, once found. For a few minutes, we chatted about our homes (his, east of Mazatlán; mine in San Diego) and our governments (both shockingly and inexcusably corrupt). Eventually, Salvador's kids arrived, and he introduced me to his happy family with a quick recap of the whole chair business. Everyone laughed, the kids bought paletas and soon, Familia Salvador went about their day. But first, we took a group selfie, which my new friend was kind enough to email to me. And in our email exchange, we agreed to find a way to visit one another again. All of this, thanks to La Nueva Michoacana.

WOW, I am putting KUA on the Yelp map tonight. You can skip the review and just come here to eat…read moreanything and it is going to be amazing! We had reservations at 8pm and when we arrived, not only did the wait staff open the door as we were walking up, but they had a reserved sign on the table. Everything about this place is first class. From the decor to the very attentive service, to the outstanding selection of items in the menu to send your taste buds all over the place from savory to spicy, this place could compete with the Michelin rated restaurants of San Francisco. We started out sharing several appetizers. The shrimp tamale and lamb taco were extremely creative with many components giving it a very elegant look. The tamale was soft, moist and bursting with nice pieces of fresh crisp Mazatlan shrimp inside. The tamale was on bean with Cotijo cheese and the beans were as creamy as soft butter. Delicious! The lamb taco was exquisite accompanied by a tasty slaw. The lamb was delicious, moist, and as tender as you can get it. For the main course I split the Octopus with Mole Sauce and the Carne Asada. Octopus, my favorite dish in all of Mexico and it is abundant in Mazatlan. The octopus tonight was amazing! Nice big plump tentacles charred to perfection and set atop a fantastic mole sauce. While the octopus had some heat, the mole sauce (not very sweet) balanced the octopus perfectly. I cut my octopus with a fork easily. Finally, the most amazing piece of meat I have ever had in Mazatlan and probably one of the best anywhere. While most Westerners think of skirt steak when you order Carne Asada, this dish comes as two nice 3 oz medallions of beef. I knew as soon as I tasted the first piece that the chef had a secret weapon in back...the sous vide machine! Sure enough I had to ask and he confirmed ALL the meat is sous vide each night when ordered. This answers why it took about 30-45 minutes after we ordered to get our food but everything is really cooked to order and not sitting around waiting for a reheat. The meat ordered medium rare as it is best served was done absolutely with perfection. Cut with a fork, I knew this had to have been sous vide. Seasoned nicely with a few specks of course sea salt, this dish really sent me over the top. We ordered the Flan for dessert which is served with Caramel ice cream and crushed oatmeal cookie. This flan is more of a cheesecake consistency than a soft custard consistency like the ones you find in the U.S. but I love it! Not wet or super sweet, this dish was a perfect finish with a great cappuccino. KUA has only been open for 8 months and I believe it will soon be in the top 3 restaurants in all of Mazatlan for those who want Michelin level food at an affordable price. I have moved KUA to my #1 slot in Mazatlan for new Mexican cuisine. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE. It is a little out of town and will cost you 80-120 pesos depending on whether you get a truck or Pulmonia. This is my first Michelin quality food experience in Mazatlan ever. There are a few close seconds but this is by far my #1. 5+ Stars

Kua really disappointed us this time, after such a fantastic meal last year…read more We started with salmon carpaccio, fantastic! Then a "toast", which wasn't a toast but a crisp tortilla with dots of sauce on it. Underneath was shrimp with delicious vegetables, but it was impossible to eat them together. Our main course was pork belly with I forget what tiny amount of sauce, it was good, but the pork belly itself was tough, chewy and bland. And finally, we were so excited to have their fabulous house dessert again, caramel ice cream and flan. It was served to us minus the ice cream, just a pile of cookie crumbs next to the flan. Luckily, in addition to the menu description we had a picture from last year, so we talked to the waiter, who came back and said he was sorry, they were out the ice cream! Just for the night! As if it was OK to serve a dessert with a key component missing and not say anything! He said he would comp the dessert, which was nothing without the ice cream, but he didn't, til we called it to his attention. Not planning to go back.
