Traveling solo, I sat at the bar and found the service friendly, attentive, and welcoming throughout my visit. My drink stayed filled, and the staff did a great job making a solo diner feel comfortable. I started with the soup, which was excellent and a great way to begin the meal. For my entrée, I ordered the large mac and cheese. The portion was generous, rich, and very satisfying after a long day of riding in the mountains. Everything was served hot and prepared with care. The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable, making it a great place to unwind after spending the day exploring the area. The restaurant felt welcoming without being overly formal, and I never felt rushed during my meal. Overall, I had a very good experience. Good food, attentive service, and a comfortable atmosphere. Hidden Gem in Blowing Rock After spending the morning at Grandfather Mountain, I took the scenic route into Blowing Rock and stumbled onto an absolute gem. Hellbender Bed & Beverage and Bistro Roca share the same space now, and the result is one of the most charming spots I've found in the High Country. The outdoor patio was beautiful, with flowers everywhere, cozy seating areas, fire pits, and plenty of dogs lounging alongside their owners. The gravel patio was a little uneven, so my table had a slight tilt, but honestly, the atmosphere more than made up for it. I started with a glass of Crémant de Loire. Crisp, cold, refreshing, and exactly what I wanted after a morning of mountain exploring. For lunch, I ordered the Moules Frites. The mussels arrived swimming in a rich, flavorful broth with basil and sun-dried tomatoes, alongside a generous pile of perfectly cooked fries. The combination with the sparkling wine was fantastic. I cleaned the plate. The service was friendly, welcoming, and genuinely pleasant. My only suggestion is a little more attention to the details. If you're serving mussels, a spoon is almost essential for enjoying that incredible broth. A smaller seafood fork would also make fishing out the mussels easier. Minor things, but details that can elevate a great meal into an exceptional one. The prices were surprisingly reasonable. My entrée and glass of bubbles came in around $23, which felt like a great value considering the quality, portion size, and setting. I skipped dessert only because I was determined to finish every last fry, then headed into town to walk off lunch and hunt for something sweet. If I return--and I absolutely would--I might even stay at the inn. The cottages looked adorable, and the whole property felt warm and inviting. Just a short walk from downtown Blowing Rock, this place delivers on atmosphere, food, and mountain-town charm. Five stars for the food. Four stars for service. Five stars overall because I'd happily come back tomorrow. Life is too short to eat mediocre food. Get out there and stuff your face. read more

Very cute and quaint place. We came in for dinner (recommended to have reservations) . The staff was friendly and welcoming. We sat in the front room which looks like what would have been a dining room since this is a repurposed house. It was a little dark in that section which is why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. We easily made a reservation for our large party on a Saturday and the table was ready for us when we arrived. We heard them telling other people it would be a really long wait, although it didn't seem too packed. The restaurant was nicely decorated. The food was just alright. The dressing on the salad was flavorless, the chili made someone in our party have an upset stomach and the chicken pot pie wasn't huge- the person who got it almost ordered a second meal. They have a full bar and drink menu as well as a couple non-alcoholic options. The cocktails were fancy! Everything was really expensive for what we got- definitely too expensive. They delivered carafes of water to our table which was nice, we could refill our own cups, but the cups were plastic.... Which was odd for how upscale the restaraunt was. The waitress also got all of our bills wrong which was a huge pain. I understand it could be confusing that we wanted to split the bill 5 ways, but we were sitting next to the person on our bill and we specifically told her what should be on each bill when it was time for the checks, and she STILL got it wrong. We escaped to blowing rock for a Sunday-Monday adventure. It was the whole family: me, the husband, baby , and dog. Yelp steered me to the Hellbender with the positive reviews! We stayed in room 6 as it was dog friendly. It's located upstairs at the end of the hall. The room in itself was great: large comfortable bed, up to date, and nice finishes like Keurig coffee. The bathroom had a nice tall shower and skylights. We all slept well which is not an easy task for this group. The room was dark and quiet at night time which was a major win! There is a parking lot with room for about 6 cars.. a big plus in this crowded town. We really enjoyed our complimentary smoothies- served after 8am. I made the reservation knowing biscuits weren't served on Monday.. bummed about that.. but will happily come back in another day to try. Great location. On a quiet side street about 3 minutes walking time to Main Street. Really friendly staff. Easy check in and check out- we were able to check in early which was a huge help! The only thing I could think of to improve our trip would be to have windows in the room that open. My husband and I tried to open windows to get fresh air after returning from a wet hike. We could not open the windows so the room did smell a little damp after some time. read more

This restaurant is very convenient to downtown Blowing Rock but has the advantage of not being right in the midst of all the crowd. The staff were friendly and dogs are welcome outside. The food was not very good, but also delivered promptly. We had the duck blt, chicken sandwich, and the trout. Everything was very good. Popped in for a quick lunch a few weeks ago. (Pre hurricane Helene, so I hope they are back up and running!) We were seated immediately. Perfect outdoor patio with some sun and shade. I have always loved that this town goes big on landscaping and flowers! It's just a beautiful place to be. The vibe and service were great. They let us have our dog on the patio too, I had the fried chicken salad; a nice large salad with blue cheese, bacon, and edamame. Pretty tasty with fresh ingredients, but I did think it needed a more flavorful dressing and more cheese. Chicken was nice and crunchy. Husben shared some of his burger and to me it was a pretty good, your average burger and fries. First, I understood that when traveling with dogs, it can be hard to find spaces that are top notch. With that said, I really wanted to love this place. We arrived on a chilly rainy afternoon, the Inn had a rustic, mountain pub vibe with a roaring fire in the bar, staff was very friendly. It's an old building, so we expected there to be some age to the property. Floors are slanted, ceilings low, wash room is separate from the bathroom, all things that come with an old building and add charm. We had our 2 small dogs with us. So, we booked room 7, on the top floor, has a separate seating area from the bedroom and a back door that leads to a small area at the rear of the property so the pups can have a place to go potty. All great when traveling with dogs and needing to have take out when weather doesn't permit patio dining. The bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows. Room also has a sound machine which is a nice touch. Sadly, the space just didn't feel clean. In the sitting room, throw blanket, sofa and throw pillows were stained and smelled as though they had never been cleaned. Throw rug in the living room was filthy. TV in the sitting room wouldn't show a picture, only sound. Room does have a Kuerig which is standard these days. However, coffee & real sugar was not stocked nor did they have anything to stir in creamer and sugar. Wine glasses were in the room, however they were very dusty. I think management could definitely do better on cleaning and preparing the room for new guests. Whether you are traveling with or without dogs, be aware that room 7 has a definite barnyard scent. We have stayed in many dog friendly properties that have been very clean. So, it can be done. Overall, fair for the price. But likely would not stay again. read more

I've been staring here since I was a kid + this new concept is great! I started coming when it was Crippens, then New Public House and most recently when it changed to Hellbender. This B&B caters towards outdoor enthusiasts that are visiting the beautiful mountains for a getaway! The rooms are updated and modern but with a touch of a "camping" feel but in doors. Beds are super comfortable and the house stays pretty quiet throughout the evening. For breakfast, you can choose from their list of delicious smoothies which were perfect to have right before our hike! I got the berry assortment and it's delicious. For lunch, we came back and both got burgers and sweet potatoes fries and we ate every last bite. Overall, this is a great place to stay both for the ambiance, price, and comfort! read more

My husband and I visited Hellbender for a late lunch while visiting Blowing Rock. We opted for their Thursday "Locals" menu, including a sandwich, a side, and either a glass of wine or beer for $12 (fries are $1 extra). Having visited the prior New Public House many times before, we were curious as to what might have changed under this new ownership/name. The interior was exactly as we remembered. The hostess told us to find a seat, and to order and pay via QR code on each table. As we were attempting to get a good signal to place the order (they use Toast Tab), she came in and said they were having issues with the service, and took the order for us. We remembered having difficulty getting any internet service in this building before, and were glad she was so accommodating. I got the smash burger with chips, and my husband got the Carolina burger with fries. Both burgers were amazing. I haven't had a burger on a bun in over a year due to watching my carbs, and this one was worth the wait, and MOST definitely carb-worthy. Both burgers had double patties, with mine having cheese and a delicious sauce, and his having chili in place of cheese. The brioche buns were soft, and perfect - not too filling. The chips were served with a tasty dipping sauce. It might have been ranch or something else. The fries came with ketchup. We dipped both the chips and fries in the sauce, it was that good! Hands down our favorite place in Blowing Rock! They have delicious and creative cocktails, amazing food and such a cool ambience. I stayed at Hellbender for three nights over Labor Day weekend and would 100% do it again. Perfectly small in (7 rooms?) within a short walk of everything downtown Blowing Rock has to offer. Great smoothies and coffee for free to Inn guests; great drinks; cool spaces. Only negatives (not enough to make this less than 5 stars): 1) no reserved parking for Inn guests, so when we arrived the parking lots was full of cars of restaurant patrons. Was told to park in the reserved parking of another hotel which seems sketchy. 2) Kitchen closed Sunday nights, Monday mornings, which I wish was made a little more explicit when I booked a Sunday night stay. read more

WOW!! My new favorite restaurant in the world! The ambiance when you walk in this place is so comforting and stylish. It feels like a home with snuggly spots to dine in, like leather high back chairs and book shelves. The windows were open and the breeze was perfect. You can smell the smells from down the road so I knew it would be good. Dray was our server and bartender, and Chef Matt was slaying it in the kitchen. We ordered the fried chicken salad and NC trout plate. This might have been the most delicious food I've ever put in my mouth and I'm not even kidding.
