Absolutely hands down incredible food and so healthy! The first day I asked the lady behind the counter to for plate that would give me the opportunity to try as many items as possible (see picture). She was fantastic and much to my surprise I loved every single thing I tried! When we left we decided to get a hot drink for our walk through the park - the manager fixed me my first Turmeric Latte and permanently altered my palette for Chai. My new go- to-must-have comfort drink is now Turmeric Latte. What a great guy. I spent the rest of my trip (2 weeks) looking for a Turmeric Latte that was even close to what this place makes. Non were close. They put fresh Ginger in theirs and on my last visit he said he was going to start adding pepper because it increased the effectiveness of the Turmeric. LUCKY people who live in Edinburgh!!! Next day I tried the Beet root Latte. I want you to know I hate beets. And he told me that a woman that worked there also disliked beets and liked this Latte. So I tried. I was pretty darn good - but no where near the love affair I now have with Turmeric Lattes. My daughter is a tiny thing - and I noticed on our second visit that she came to the table with a tray full! I laughed and laughed. She too loved this special place!

Nachos with veggie haggis, caramelised onion, vegan cheese, guacamole, hot salsa, (hold the jalapeños)

This part of Hendersons has recently gone totally vegan - it used to be vegetarian/vegan and in the downstairs restaurant part on Hanover Street and the upstairs deli/shop you can still get vegetarian stuff. Seating is a little cramped as the restaurant is quite small and I would say that was my only downside to the experience. Mains are a quid or two more than I would prefer to pay but it is Edinburgh, the dishes contain quite a lot of ingredients, and have a good degree of creativity to them. Also, I loved the presentation, so it's not a huge complaint. We'd gone in around 3pm to reserve for dinner, and though it had been pretty quiet at that time when we went back later walk-in customers had a wait for a free table as the restaurant had a few other bookings, too. As we're trying to budget a bit at the moment we got a jug of tap water and skipped dessert (the PAIN!). We shared a small nachos that was topped with veggie haggis, caramelised onion, guacamole, hot salsa, vegan cheese, and omitted the jalapenos. It was a decent sized starter for a slightly hefty £5.80 and was delicious; I'd probably get a whole portion to myself next time so I didn't need to share. For the main I got the orange & chilli tofu nacho crumble with quinoa. The tofu is smoked, and it's marinated overnight before prepping with the crumbed topping and was really good. The side of vegetables was presented with a wedge of orange, and the quinoa with a wedge of lime, which I would suggest squeezing over the salad and quinoa to add flavour (which is probably a reason it's there and I just wasn't classy enough to figure this out!). Hubbie got the cashew fritters with rice and satay sauce which impressed him, and I was also liked from the nibble I had. They have a specials blackboard which features a dessert, a soup, and a hummus, all of which I presume changes on a daily basis. I will return!

Haggis that was haggard. Not a good dish at all. Bland

What a disappointment this place turned out to be. The concurrent theme in vegan food throughout England and Europe is under seasoning . Henderson's suffers form this contagious problem. The cauliflower soup was drastically under seasoned and bland. You must taste the food before it's served , only then you will realize pepper and salt was needed. Now the Haggis.. mushed lentils and red beans with some cold purple potatoes and a bland brown sauce does not maketh a Haggis. I am vegan and this was not passable it was a mash up that was uninspired and unimaginative. A bland experience . This food seems to be suffering from being trapped in the past , say the 1970s , when it comes to unique and imaginative vegan food. The menu was relevant about 40 years ago but today is completely outdated

I uttered an unenthusiastic" yayyyy" at the prospect of eating at this vegetarian bistro when a friend suggested it! Mmmm vegetables... I was just acting up though, because I know vegetarian food is just as delicious as any other and the food was really good! As well as vegetarian food, there's the further option of having vegan food if you're REALLY into self depravation :D I had a medium meal of three salads, and I'm a big fan of the spicy bean paste. I chose it because it looks exactly like Nigerian stewed beans, so my brain immediately felt it would be good. The potato salad and and brown rice are also a good bet, and the desserts are absolutely delicious. I had a fruit gateaux with soya cream (I decided I might as well go all the way) but was equally tempted by the banoffee pie which my friend raved over. Regarding the atmosphere, it's definitely a place I could see myself whiling away the hours in. The decor is modern, but friendly and they're pictures of supposed famous people all round the walls. Or as someone noted they're "all middle-aged white men" so hardly a Hollywood Walk of Fame feel here.

For dessert we had pineapple upside down cake, which was warm and the perfect balance of sweet and tart. A great find in Edinburgh!

We decided on this restaurant late in the day, and the only reservation was late...we took it but showed up a couple hours early, and with a short wait, they were able to seat us at a nice table on a busy evening. Grateful for that! My wife and I shared two starters, the final and the smoked tofu. We loved everything about both of these dishes in taste and presentation. We also shared the Double-Baked Pudding - a delicate dish sort of like a soufflé made with a nice cheese ambiance about it. Really good flavors and Scottish ingredients for the win. We liked it, though the starters were definitely the stars of the meal for us. We didn't have a cocktail as we were heading out to a whisky bar later (and we have limits ;) but the cocktail menu looked delicious and what we saw being delivered to other tables also had as second guessing those limits we have for ourselves. Probing why I was going a little, they got out of me I am of the Gordon Clan of Aberdeenshire, a Scotland of Old clan. One of my friends exclaimed, "Gordon!" He paused, looked me directly in the eyes and said, "You know we're rivals right?!" He is Nate James Lindsey. A member of the Lindsey Clan, one of the Gordon Clan's rival clans in Scotland of Old. Once we addressed our rival ancestries, he recommended to me The Baked Potato Shop in Edinburgh, the city I was flying into/out of for my first trip not only to Scotland, but to Europe as well. Well, I might as well go I thought, how bad can a rival clan recommendation be. The night I arrived in Edinburgh, 5 July 2019, I entered The Baked Potato Shop and was greeted by a friendly worker. After looking over the menu, I went with a baked potato loaded with vegan chilli and vegan Macsween haggis. After placing my order, paying, and getting the baked potato I thought the only thing missing from my first ever evening in Scotland was bagpipe music. No sooner had I thought that than I heard the sounds of bagpipes wafting across the cobbled lane out front of the Shop. Across the cobbled lane I went, lured by the wail of the bagpipes. After listening for a bit and providing a tip I returned to the guest house I was staying the night at. The food was delicious and filled my travel-tired belly. The haggis was the first I had of any kind, vegan or non-vegan, and it was an immediate favorite. Offset from my departure time zone by 8 hours, I went to sleep soon after eating. I woke up early the next morning ready to go. Turns out the baked potato and toppings cured my jet lag in less than 24 hours, quite remarkable. What a way to end my first day in Scotland, a recommendation from a member of a rival Scotland of Old clan yields tasty food. I will however note that I am also of Irish descent, so I am still not sure what to make of the recommendation in light of the Irish Potato Famine... Ahhh, Scotland of Old lives on.

I had no idea who Phil Rosenthal was until I saw the episode featuring local chef, Tony Singh. I just had to try the Chunky Cullen Skink based off of the recommendations of many reviewers who posted about it. I was not disappointed. In fact, it was the best local discovery of our entire trip to Edinburgh. It's located in the historic port area of Leith. It's not exactly super close to Ocean Terminal, but it's worth the walk for the experience. I could immediately tell that the building used to be a church. Actually, it's much older than that. The building dates back to 1892. It was actually a pub called the "Black Swan" before that. You'll see a stone carving of a swan above the sign at the front entrance that pays homage to it. This place was packed on a Saturday during lunchtime. Fortunately, there was room for 2 at the bar. Make reservations during peak times for a table. Otherwise, accept whatever space is left at the bar. It's a very homey kind of place. The decor has been described as quirky. I found it to be very charming with many antiquities in the background. The staff were all friendly and genuinely cared about our experience. The soup (skink) was simply amazing! To hear them say that there's not much that goes into making it is truly a humble understatement. I absolutely loved the smoked haddock, thinly sliced potatoes, and leeks. Don't be fooled by this wee cup of Cullen skink. It's very hearty & filling. It comes with the most delicious homemade bread. Even the butter was fantastic. I'm still thinking about everything that we ordered. My husband's Mac n' Cheese was also very memorable. The menu describes it as being "kissed with truffle oil" which really made it special. He added jalapeños and totally loved it, along with the beautiful side salad as well. His local Leith lager went perfectly with it. I was loving the "Hoose Brew" loose leaf tea served in a little teapot. We didn't have room for dessert. Would I go back again? Absolutely! This is exactly the kind of local experience that we seek out when traveling. It's a warm & welcoming family-run bar & restaurant with great homemade goodness. Highly recommended!!
