This review is for their photography services. They took the photos for my child's school. Though I was very pleased with their in-person customer service, I am not with on-going customer service. The photos were set-up that you had to order a package in advance of seeing the actual photos, or you could purchase a digital download of your preferred images. I chose the digital download option after seeing the images. The digital download was $25 per image. This was in September. To date (now end of May), I have yet to receive any digital download, email link, etc. The images are removed from their website, I have called and left many messages (at least 5) and have called many more times as they rarely answer the phone and it does not appear they have an active voicemail. I've been told I have to speak directly with the owner, who is never available and never returns my calls. So I guess I'm out $50 for photos I never received. I will not be purchasing from them again. This saddens me because I understand their printing and in-shop services are one of the only available in Bakersfield and I want to support local businesses, but not when they operate like this. read more

Henley's Photo - Photography Stores & Services Near Me - Bakersfield, California

I used Henley's this year to print and mount my picture to enter to the fair which seemed like a good idea since they were the image drop off point anyways and I wanted to support the only local camera store which I had had good experiences with years ago. Unfortunately after ordering a print via their online store, I had called the next day for an update and was assured that my print would be ready for pick-up that day only to find out in person that their printers were down and unable to print for the day. That was fine as things happen, however on top of that, since I was there, I decided to just pay and order the mounting of the image in advance so I wouldn't have to come back a second time only to find out they were charging significantly more than their current listed prices online, and on top of that to drop it off/mount for the fair they were charging a late fee not listed anywhere on their site for having it done the week of submissions. I pointed that out to the woman ringing me up and she pretty much just told me oh well, that's what we are charging despite what's listed. For reference, their website's pricing to this day lists an 11x14 mount at $8 but they ended up charging me $10 plus a $5 late fee not listed anywhere on their site and ordering portal with the total amount with tax coming out to $16.24. That's not even including the price of the print itself so I ended up paying double what their website's price lists for mounting. If they had been transparent about their pricing that would be one thing and I wouldn't even be writing a review, but them not honoring their current listed prices put me off and has made sure that I'll never use them as a print lab again. read more

My dad passed away a few years ago and while I was going through a box of his things I found a 27 year old VHS tape of my first birthday. I recently brought that tape in to be transferred to DVD. Even with the tape being as old as it was and having a minor issue with a spring in the casing, they were able to preserve those precious memories. Super friendly staff and awesome work. Have been requesting a refund for undelivered pictures since September. First they lost them and now I gave no idea where they are. Still have not received either my photos or a refund. Every time I call the owner is the only one that can give refunds but they are too busy to get to me. I do not recommend not one single phone call of mine has been returned and the communication is absolutely horrible. read more

I went in here today hoping to stay away from the chain stores and support a local business. We had probably 20 photos each on a couple of android phones Samsung and HTC. The guy at the counter said our androids would not synch with their equipment. Said that I phones/Apple products worked fine, that we would need to email the photos as attatchments, then they would be able to print. HELLO??If we wanted to email, we would not be standing at your counter. Not everyone uses Apple products!! So needless to say we walked out and gave our money to Rite Aid down the street. Did not want to but the limitations of Henleys cost them our business. And I will never be back. read more

I love supporting all things local in Bakersfield...let's get that out of the way first off. I went into Henley's to get some photos printed from my wedding to give as Christmas gifts. I usually print photos at Costco due to the simpleness of it all. Upload photos online, get an email when they are ready and head to Costco a couple hours later to pick up. Plus, they are cheap. But, cheap usually means not the best quality. These were to be gifts and I wanted quality. So, I chose to visit Henley's for the first time. I ventured online first to get some pricing. I was willing to pay up to a certain point. Their website says it's being updated and there was no useful info on it. So, I next called Henley's during normal business hours to get a quote on some 4x6 and 5x7 prints. No one answered so I left a message. 2 days later, sill no response. So, I drove to Henley's on my day off with my discs of pictures and list of photos. Once inside the store clerk directed me to a computer to sit at and select the photos to print. It was easy, but I just wondered why couldn't I be doing this at home on their website? After upload she informed me to return to pick them up before they closed. So, they were ready same day. Prices seemed normal and I was happy with photo quality. But, I just hated having to go to the store expecting customer service and then being directed to work on my own at a computer. You feel me, right? End rant. read more

Took a picture to have 2 8x10 copies made. Paid for the pictures at the time. New owner shut the store down before I could pick them up. Cannot locate new store or the owner. If I could give zero stars I would! I was brought to Henley's because I was in need of assistance with revision on an old photo of my parents. I called to check on the order and Zack answered my call. When questioning the status of my photo that I had already waited three days on with no update, might I add this was for my fathers funeral. He proceeded to tell me I just need to wait and if didn't like it I can just pick it up and take it somewhere else! As if I was asking unreasonable questions. This kid lacks all customer service skills existed to work in the public! I would recommend going anywhere but this place. I only finished my order with them for the sake of the unfortunate time line I was under. Really had high hopes for the business. Photo was outsourced for revision so I can't even give them credit for that. If you value customers service at all don't go here! read more

So, when your hours on the door say 3 - 6 P. M. and I get there at 3:45 P.M. today (Friday) to a locked door and a sign on the counter that says, "We're in the back. " Give me a break! Do you really wonder why your front door was kicked and the glass broken? It wasn't me, but I know frustration when I see it. You should try to live up to Henley's history on your website - or close your doors and not just to retreat to "the back." Really. Your phone message is nicely vague, too. I love Henley's, its just too bad that they closed the camera store portion. For printing they are top-notch, and will even process black and white (the real stuff AND chromagenic). I even brought them a black and white negative that they did a high quality scan and then printed VERY large, to fit in the wood housing of an old wall clock on canvas. read more

I wish I could give 10 stars! I've been a Henleys customer since birth -- and still have pictures from the 70s that are in great condition. I still love going in to get all of my favorite memories printed and recommend them every chance I get. The staff is wonderful, the picture quality is amazing, and the services (online ordering, portrait studio, killer classes) are spot on and exactly what this town needs. I took my camera in to be checked out just yesterday and Jimmy spent well over 20 minutes helping me figure out the problem. The best of the best. Thanks again guys! read more

I had some old black and white negatives developed at Henley's.They did a nice job but the only complaint I have is with the quality of the paper they used.It was just really thin and lightweight and somehow just made the photos look sort of cheap and flimsy.If they had used a thicker weight paper it would have made a big difference in the quality of the photos.I have this same complaint with the photo developing 'chains'.They use really thin and cheap paper.I remember back in the day when they used paper that had some real weight to it---- read more

Very Disappointed! Dealt with Nick. Worst service, EVER! Our Canon SLR camera was having trouble with the auto focus feature. We knew it was not the lens because it wouldn't focus with ANY other lens, and our lens worked on other cameras. Took it to Henley's. They had to send it away to Canon and said they would have a price in 2 wks and they would contact us. We never got a call. After a month, I called and they said they hadn't heard but would call Canon. Another 2 wks went by...finally, they re-called Canon and informed me the price was $170 to fix the auto focus. We approved the fix. Another month went by, I called back and was informed there was a misunderstanding....the $170 was to fix the lens , which they already did...(nothing wrong with the lens, stated above) and now there is a $350 charge to fix the body! We said "No way, send it all back". Another 3 weeks, still don't have our camera! Henley's used to be a great camera shop in Bakersfield, no longer! read more

I got sand in my camera lens and it wasn't opening anymore. I was passing through Bakersfield and looked these guys up on yelp and they said they'd give it a shot. Not only did they fix it with some compressed air and nimble hands, they didn't even charge me. Great service!! read more

I did not get what I ordered. I asked for all my pictures be matte and not glossy. When I arrived to pick up my order, all my pictures except for one were glossy. I showed the boy at the front desk and all he did was feel each photo with his fingers and said some were glossy. I asked him why they were matte and he didn't say anything until I had to ask again. He said it was probably because they ran out of matte. I asked him if it displayed in my order that I requested the photos to be in matte and he said "yes". He provided no apologies or concern. I asked him if it was common practice to not inform the customer that they would not be able to meet their request. The guy just stared off and looked at his computer. He did not offer to print them over in matte. Those pictures were expensive. They were for my grandpa's 99th birthday. Very poor customer services. read more

The only thing good about this place is that it was easy to order my pictures online. Other than that, I was very unimpressed with the overall quality and service. I was in a hurry when I went to pick up my photos, so I didn't look at them before I left (probably my bad) but I feel that they should have recommended that I look at them before I leave. The pictures were pixelated and not even the correct orientation. I feel that they should go over the photos with you or at least warn you that they may not be the exact quality you expected, or when they print them and notice that it's absolutely horrible that they would recommend that you try a different method of submitting the photos online. Just an update, Henley's has moved around the corner in the Very Same building and has upgraded their services with top notch, cutting edge technology and even better service. You will not find the combination of superior quality, amazingly friendly service, incredibly knowledgable management and great prices anywhere else on the West Coast. My husband is an amateur astronomer, astrophotographer, and long time member of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society. On occasion he has the need (desire?) to have some of his work printed. The wonderful people at Henley's have worked with him to give him just the right work of art for our home at a very reasonable price. I don't go into Henley's much because I have most of what I need for my digital cameras but I wanted to try out a film camera I just acquired so down to Henley's I went. Looked at the mini refrigerator they keep for film and there wasn't much to be had so I asked the kid behind the counter. Well, he straight up told me they only had some expired rolls and that they were waiting for an order to come in. Just what do I need Henley's for except they can develop and scan my FILM for me, if only I had some film. If you don't have the inventory when I need it, I may have to just go online for this too. Sorry Henley's but you're missing out by not keeping on top of an item which only you carry in all of Bakersfield. read more

Used to be a full service camera store, but alas that business model is extinct in a city of this size. Was always a great place and the current staff are first rate. Currently the only place in town to get color print film (C-41) processed scanned, and printed (35mm, 120, 220) with next day service. They do a great job, returning clean unscratched negatives and nice prints. Hopefully the volume will allow them to continue to offer these services. Having been a customer of Henley's since the early 1970's it pains me to have to write this review. The prior owners. Joe Henley and later Tom Birch, prided themselves on good customer service. The business now is an insult to the tradition these two gentlemen worked so hard to establish and maintain. I recently went to Henley's for a passport photo. The business opens at !0 AM and I arrived at 10:10. Was told by the clerk that the fellow who did the passport photos wasn't in yet but was on his way. Told the same thing 3 times over the next 40 minutes. Was about to walk out when I was told he had arrived and I was taken into a "studio". While waiting further I heard the tardy employee being taken to task for being late, for not responding to someones inquiries about an order and other failures. .As a suggestion to management : Praise in public, discipline in private. I really didn't appreciate wasting even more of my time while personnel issues are "resolved" After photo was taken (less than 1 minute) I was informed it would be ready the next day after 4 PM. That was the last straw. Stooped on my way home at Walgrens and had the passport photo done and in hand in a grand total of 12 minutes for\less than Henley's price. I strongly believe in supporting local business but only if their level of service earns the support. Unfortunately my experience with Henley's, as it now exists, makes my very unlikely to return. read more

So this is an update from my previous review. Henley's is under new management. I was in earlier this week because I needed some quick pictures for Christmas gifts. I walked in and everything was gone, save a few items and printing equipment. The old owner decided he wanted out and started selling stuff off. One of the employees bought the company from him and is now running the business. I'm glad to see them still around. I really hope they learn from the old owners mistake and keep a good inventory and better customer service. I would like to support the local guy but if his prices are crazy high Amazon will still be getting my money and I'll still use an online print house. read more

Looking to get a Canadian passport photo? This is the place! They are professional, inexpensive and make sure the photos are the correct size for the Canadian passport office. Quick service, waited less than 10 minutes for my photos. Definitely much easier and quicker than the post office which cannot guarantee the size of the pictures! I took a specialty role of 35mm film into Henley's for development, and not were they able to meet my expectations with the odd format size, but exceed it! They are a small venue, but the staff is INCREDIBLY knowledgeable of just about every format of film out there both new and ancient, and even know how to convert between film formats as well. They may be the only folks in town, but in my opinion, they're the only ones that need to be in town :) All I would say is if they could make their venue larger and have more selection, but of course with competition out there, it's just best to specialize in a service and do it really damn-well and that's what they do! Unfortunately if you need anything specific and they don't have out on hand, its better to do your shopping on line. I ordered $750 worth of product and was happily assured it would be at the store within a week.... I call them.... A week later...a month later... And now its been 4 months. Initially it was oops they forgot to order it and that is forgivable. Still no return call, no update. They just don't care. They are super nice and friendly in the store. They make you feel like a valued costumer, but your order our business doesn't really matter to them. Bottom line is, if they have what you need great otherwise shop elsewhere. read more
