Honestly at first I thought 'go to a senior center?' why would I go to a place like that? I thought it was something for 'old' people. Ha ha, well it is for 55 and older but certainly not what I originally thought. Besides the numerous clubs covering everything from dinner, traveling, hiking, books, cards, tai chi, etc, there are also special events. We've recently attended a few cooking classes. The speakers and entertainment are great. Last summer's concert series ended with Boys of Summer. I'd be surprised if you came in and didnt find something you liked. But if that happens they're also open to any new ideas you have. If you want to teach a class they'd like that also. Have I mentioned the staff? Everyone there is super friendly and welcoming. Have I mentioned, it's not just open to town residents. Check it out!

The senior center's director is an amazing woman who really cares about not just her job, but for those for whom she does this job. And the activities director is also pretty fantastic. She makes sure the seniors have movie nights, exercise classes, relevant guest speakers, and even fun trips. There are a lot of volunteer opportunities at the senior center as well. The building is sometimes used as a shelter during storms, and some of the seniors will volunteer to work during these times. In addition, it's used as a polling place, where many seniors find opportunities to serve their community. My mom also volunteers in the kitchen sometimes helping to prepare meals, at the front desk, and wherever else there's a need. She has delivered meals for Meals on Wheels through a program at the Clarence Senior Center. Every month we get a newsletter in the mail that outlines all the great programs that are available to members. Some things are there every month: weekly Bingo, Pinochle, Wood working, and a few other things. But then sometimes there are local trips, like to the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute and restaurant. They occasionally have mystery tours as well, where the travelers signed up don't know where they are going until they get there. Those are always fun trips (I know because my mom has asked me to join her on a few of them). If you've got a parent or loved one who is looking for somewhere they can go to play cards or Bingo or just to hang out and meet other seniors, this is a safe and welcoming environment. I highly recommend checking it out!
