Mrs. Picante found this little campsite at Hebgen Lake. Assuming the whole area would be rather beautiful, we threw caution to the wind and booked it for three nights. The campsite is a couple of miles off the main highway, along a fairly well-maintained road that heads out into the wilderness. Our campsite was flat and very close to the pit toilets, but also very close to the Lakeshore. Our California plates got us a couple of second glances from a few folks, but nothing to worry about. All who love nature and respect her always seem to be welcomed among people who quickly become friends. I had heard whispers that this particular lake has a pretty good brown trout fishery, and I was not disappointed. Granted, a couple of locals and a multi campsite large family gathering we're overheard whispering to each other about "the guy with California plates and the long rod throwing the bass lure" ... but although this was not water I had fished before, I've learned a thing or two over the years. Patience and persistence paid off, as I landed quite a few fish including one of the largest I've ever caught. And I think I earned a lot of respect from those same locals, when I snapped a few nice pictures with my fish, turned back to the water, and watched her swim away, released healthy to fight another day. Fishing licenses can be purchased online, which is how I got mine. Notably, this is grizzly bear country, so putting your things away in the provided bear boxes is essential for the safety of other campers and of course the Bears themselves. There were quite a few jet skiers and other pleasurecraft folks on the water during the day, but things settle down in the evening, which of course lasts a long time during summer in those northern latitudes. My family enjoyed renting a paddleboard for the day, and I labored through blowing up their inflatable inner tubes at altitude, much to their delight. Absolutely beautiful country up here, and a place I hope I get to visit again.

I was in this part of Idaho on a long weekend trip, and though there are some incredible national parks within a few hours of driving distance, we also wanted to take in some of the local sights and hikes, and Harriman happened to be on the list. We loaded up a picnic and made our way there. I wasn't expecting it to be as large as it is, but when you drive in you get a sense for it. We stopped at the kiosk to pay our $5 entrance fee, and there are maps all over with a bit of info. I was with some veterans of the park, so we knew to head to the picnic area where there was a lot of parking and then a small system of walkways with lots of picnic tables. We selected ours, dug in, and enjoyed a lovely lunch with sandwiches, apples, and all the things you should pack when going out for the day. We didn't have as much time as we thought we would, so we were looking to take a short hike when the nice rangers pointed us to a small loop. The signage here is pretty great, and each map tells you which signpost you are standing at, and then you find its corresponding number on the map. We walked along a river, through the historic buildings (and cabins for rent, apparently) which were all closed due to pandemic concerns, and then cut back along the river to the lakeshore. The views here of the water were awesome, and we spent a few moments on the bridge getting great photos. It's a nice combo of history, nature, trees, well-defined paths, and lots of waterfowl and animals. It's the kind of place you can kind of choose your own adventure and do what you want. I wish we would have had more time to do all the hiking, but our little loop was really quite satisfying.

There was a ridge with an amazing view. We saw a small heard of elk running through the woods. We saw an eagle and an osprey. There were a couple of steep climbs (always fun on a horse). We got up to a trot a couple of times. Our legs were a bit stiff after the ride but not sore the next day. It was perfect! The horses are wonderful, each with their own personalities. They had just the right amount of spirit. And they were very responsive to your lead. Josie was our trail boss (guide) and she was absolutely amazing. She explained everything thoroughly. She made everything fun. She took amazing care of us. She knows that property like the back of her hand. And she's as amazing with horses as she is with people. My friend and his family have ridden here nine times already and I'm so glad they recommended it. It's a lifelong memory.

Hayden was our guide & he was really friendly & knowledgeable about the area & horses. Our group was small too which made the experience more intimate (5 riders + our guide). Eagle Ridge Ranch is affordable, has beautiful trails, well behaved horses & attentive/accommodating staff. We went on a rainy morning & it cleared up in an hour, but the rain didn't bother us. Eagle Ridge is close to Yellowstone, Bozeman & the Tetons so there's plenty to do after an early morning ride. Thank you for the experience!!!

On that day, a storm must've been moving in because the wind was gusting and there were actually waves on the lake! We got out a couple times and explored the beachfront. I found a couple of bird feathers, which was exciting for me, and generally just amazing given the gusts of wind - I was surprised that they didn't blow away. On our third day in the park as we came back through from the fishing bridge headed towards Old Faithful, we went by the lake again, and we were stunned at the complete difference in personality that we were witnessing. The lake was completely and totally calm, quiet, and gentle. We had to stop and explore again, and it was such a different experience from the day before. This lakefront is amazing and it's definitely a place to be explored in the park.

It's a HUGE lake and it took me a while to drive down the road with the lake by my side. There are a lot of pulloffs that you can soak in the views or even go down to the lake and play in the water. It'll take you a while to drive around the entire lake and there are multiple parts of it. West Thumb and Grant Visitor Center will be closest to the main sections of the park and closest to Grand Loop Road. Although the South and Southeast arms of the lake are further away I imagine they're less crowded so you can have more peace doing all your fun activities.

The West Entrance to Yellowstone National Park was efficient every time we went through. We never…read moreencountered a longer WEEKDAY-delay at the entrance than 15min, on different weekdays approximately 6:30am, 8am, 8:30am, 10:30am, and 11am. (Jul 2026). On the other hand, even when we entered at 6:30am, traffic built up by the time we got to popular locations to the south between the entrance and Old Faithful. Not terribly bad, but enough that we would have started earlier if we could have. Studying traffic apps, it looked like traffic was better entering before 5:30am or maybe even 6am. We never saw bad backups (besides wildlife sightings) going north, or going all the way west between the north and south loops. We never started early enough to see sunrise inside the park. At the entrance, the far right lane was for pre-paid passes. With three other lanes open, the prepaid lane wasnt even twice as fast as the others. It was around two-cars faster when the other lanes were 6 or 8 cars. Pretty efficient. And they give you a useful park map, though you can buy more detailed maps and guidebooks at the park's visitors centers and around town. We used the free ones :-) We felt that the NPS app had info that's easier to access than their website. And believe it when they say cell service is limited to the major sights and visitor centers. Even GPS was spotty. So, after our first couple hours in the park, we made a point to download maps and info before the next leg of the trip, and on the second time in, we downloaded the night before.

Definitely a must see! There is a new wonder around every turn. We entered from the Northeast using…read morethe Chief Joseph Scenic highway into the Lamar valley- beautiful grasslands where herds of Bison roam and even lay in the road in front of your car! We stayed at the Yellowstone lake inn and cabins which was an excellent location. The park has a loop road in a figure eight, very easy to navigate through the signage could use improvement. We were able to see a lot in 2 days but you need to be able to hike to some of the features. A lot can be seen from your car or a short walk. Be prepared to wait! We were there after Labor Day and it wasn't quite as busy as usual but you still had to wait for a parking place. I downloaded a narrated self tour from Viator that was downloaded to my phone. There is no cell service in all of the park but calls by satellite can be made from your phone in case of emergency. GPS does work well but is slow at times. The tour started from any entrance and picked up your location to continue. It also gave you good directions. With so many geysers and geothermal sites to see, pick what you really want the see as much as you can fit in! Almost 500 miles of roadway in the main loop. 1200 geysers, thousands of steam vents, mud pots, thermal pools- you can't possibly see it all! Enjoyed every minute!

I underestimated how much driving there would be which was a little tough with small children. Make sure you GPS before you get into the park as there is no service. I highly recommend you fill up your gas tank and bring plenty of snacks! They do have food in the park but if you don't like hotdogs and ice cream I suggest you pack some food.

We had originally planned two nights and I wish that we had been able to take the time. The bathrooms are large and clean, as are the showers. One of the staffers offered to take my picture with my bike. At the exit, I had to stop to do some typical adjustments and the booth ranger checked in with me and gave me some tips about the road. The only confusing part was the trash situation. We car/motorcycle camp and they only do trash pickup at a certain time of morning. There are no dumpsters.

I know there are a plethora of places to go fishing…read morein Henry's Fork, as well as guides who can show you the ropes but for a novice and a few amateurs Henry's Fork Anglers know their stuff. We had two guides on a four day fishing tour and each day was a different experience. We were pairs with a new guide every day and they all really knew their stuff. The area, weather wise made each day different but each guide made the best of it. I would say, overall the pro shop was well kept and clean and full of different items for purchase but getting down to the nitty gritty for fishing, exploring the areas best spots and each guide knowing their way around the area and really giving us the gold standard for treatment, I really felt it was a place I would want to return time and time again. Even if you just want to get a1-2 or4-5 day trip in, you can't beat Henry's Fork Anglers guided tour.

The weather was the worst ever. Our Guide, Pierce was the BEST guide we have had at Henry's Fork…read more He worked hard to help us "hunt" for risers and then took it to striking distance by walking the boat. Even with wild winds, we were able to get close to big fish and see a lot of action because our guide knew what he was doing. The first question he asked us was how long we had been fly fishing and what we wanted to do. Then he delivered. He was very enthusiastic and knew how to fish in the conditions that we were dealt. I have been fly fishing for 20 years. With what I learned from Pierce, the next day on the ranch I was able to get seven (7) large fish in one hour. That is the best I have ever done on Herriman Ranch. Next year when we come back, I will ask for Pierce. The attached photo is one that I took of my fishing partner and Pierce. I was in the high 40s with wild winds when we caught that trout.

We stayed for 4 nights as a group who held 4 spots. The place was well kept, the showers were…read moredecent enough that we all used them over the showers in our RVs. I had not heard any complaints from our groups regarding use of any of the facilities. The dish/wash area was well kept and included a microwave. We were newbies to the RV scene but everyone one else in our group has had their fair share of that RV camping life. They remained patient when they realized we hadn't checked in while we had been physically present for at least an hour on the reserved site and our camper was on its way. Apparently we were happy campers and so were the rest of our group. Our organizer selected this spot due to the ease of fishing access for the kids, there was this little extended patch of land the kids were able to go to each day. They caught rainbow trout, the kids were proud and the ones who were too young but watching, well, it probably only ignited their interest even more. Our experience was good, everyone in our group of 30+ enjoyed ourselves and noted this is one of the better if not best sites they have had on their family camping trip.

She rambled on about her house, her rules. I asked for the rules; she refused. But none of the staff and the owner said anything about the drunk guy yelling at a woman across the street on another property, using the F'word. Or the group of loud women making breakfast outside, yelling back and forth to communicate between the BBQ area and their camping spot behind me starting at 6am. That was in the rules, but not enforced. It's not like they could use their cell phones, but hey, why would anybody be mad at their rainbow flag and breaking rules? FAFO!
