New Restaurant Highlight Today we are at Henry's Soul Cafe in DC @henryssoulcafe Henry's Soul Café, Home of the Sweet Potato Pie is known for it's fine southern cooking and sweet potato pie. A tradition that was originally founded and established by Henry E. Smith in February 1968 in Washington DC as Henry's Deli Carryout. I'm so excited *The Fried Chicken was crispy and seasoned to perfection just like somebody grandma was in the back kitchen cooking. Mmm mmm lm talking country good The Jumbo Turkey Wings and Cabbage were sopped up delicious But the Crispy Fried Fish was outstanding, and let's not forget the Collard Greens and Candied Yams...Man Listen, Bangin! Henry's lately things are not looking or tasting the same. We support you with waiting outside for our number to be called. We support you with a limited numbers of people inside the restaurant to place the order and we will try to continue supporting your no cash policy. What I can not support is the service. I called about my order, and I did see the crowd of people coming and going, so I know you are busy, however, I did not order your DCStaff attitude and I don't want it. Mr.Henry please encourage your DC team, to let work with your DC Customers.

I found Henry's while in the area after I did a quick search for soul food. I arrived inside and was greeted by the staff. I was adamant about trying the fried chicken but after asking about the meatloaf she said it was their number one seller so I went for that with my 2 sides being mashed potatoes and gravy and collard greens. They had sample sweet potato pies and a shelf of other desserts to purchase so I purchased a slice of sweet potato pie. The meal also came with a cornbread and was ready in under 5 minutes. The portion was very reasonable and matched the price ($13 for everything including dessert). The food was very good and flavorful. Being from the south I'm used to the gravy being tomato-based and red but I wasn't mad at the brown gravy of choice. The potatoes and greens were also very good! The sweet potato pie was a bit too sweet and I ended up not being able to eat much of it. The restaurant isn't very big but was very clean. I'd definitely recommend and would return to try something new when in the area.

Mmmm so good! I ordered the chicken and waffles with a half & half and a slice of sweet potatoe pie. The establishment was very clean with good customer service. Cons Limited eating space I ordered my food to go and ate it at work and caught the itis.

We decided to come here for this barbecue Sunday because Oohs & Ah's was closed. We typed in barbecue and this was like four blocks away. There isn't much of a storefront but inside there's a super extensive soul food menu. They have some serious desserts but we decided to go overboard on entrées for our first time. The sweet tea is the best sweet tea I've ever had in my entire life, hands-down. We got four platters and all the servings were ginormous. You get to pick a meat and two sides for each meal and we ended up choosing mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, collard greens, corn stuffing, candied yams, and potato salad. All of the sides impressed, but the candied yams stood out as the best I've ever had. The Mac n cheese was a little on the dry side for my taste, but still delicious. A word from Priscilla: "it was divine!" A word from Peter: "the greens were really on point and the chicken leg was nice and juicy and not dry like a lot of fried chicken."

I always pass by this place and have wanted to give it a try, after all, I love some good ol' soul food. I will also consider giving this place another star the next time I go there and try something new. My friend really liked his meal (Smothered 1/2 Chicken with Fried Okra & Mashed Potatoes) he gave this place 4 stars. This place has large portions! This is a hole in the wall location; however, you will be shocked at how many items are on their menu! They have options for a main entree, two sides, and a choice of dinner rolls or cornbread for a mad decent price. There are also so many different selections for sides that all looked very tasty and eventually, I will have tried all of them. I ordered a Country Fried Steak, with Mac & Cheese and Mashed Potatoes. Clearly, I'm a fan of carbs. I also got 5 wings with their special hot sauce as another "side" (I was famished). I'll start by reviewing their wings. I really enjoyed these buffalo wings with special hot sauce! The sauce had a major kick & the wings were seasoned just perfectly. At first I was bummed because they didn't have Bleu Cheese (they only serve Ranch), but honestly I didn't even end up dipping my wings into any sauce ~ they were that good! The entree - I should've known better than to get Country Fried Steak! I'm very picky when it comes to that food item because I only like it with white gravy & I get slightly disappointed when places use brown gravy. The mashed potatoes with gravy were just fine. I wasn't a big fan of the Mac & Cheese - it was too try for my taste, so i'll steer clear of that next time. Everything was packaged nicely though so perfect for walking down a couple blocks with, without worrying about the condition of your food by the time you get back. I will definitely go to this place again, and try more menu items. Next time I'll try the 1/2 BBQ Chicken with Collard Greens & Potato Salad.

Everyone raved about the buffets (we did a "cookout" style, a "fajita bar" style, and we had breakfast for three days). Everything was cooked well and seasoned well! The fresh fruit was delicious! Dinner was for 25 + people and there was barely enough food for 12. Not that this mattered, as EVERYTHING was inedible and there were no plates, cutlery or napkins provided. I take that back, the store brought $2.00 (price still on) cornbread and $16.00 cake were the ONLY items edible. The Mac and Cheese was dry and bland. I will give them credit for it being both overcooked and undercooked all in the same batch. I'm still trying to make sense of that! The only adjective that even remotely describes this Mac and Cheese is "disrespectful". Like, seriously, the disrespect was 10/10. The chicken was undercooked and bland. How do you make jerk chicken bland and soggy? I'm actually curious. The "blackened" salmon was overcooked yet not blackened, creating another "make it make sense" moment. I immediately spat out the greens. They were undercooked, not under-seasoned but literally "not seasoned". Wait, I take that back too, if you count the dirt and grit as seasoning. They should be ashamed of themselves for ripping people off. Pictures don't lie. The fact that they were sent pictures and still stood behind their product tells you all you need to know. Please, please, PLEASE do not let these people ruin your event and more importantly your special moments and memories. I'll start at the start--from the first email we sent to B. Lin Catering--they were responsive, helpful, and really thoughtful about our questions. That is no small thing, because we threw a lot of questions at them in that first email, and throughout the process, I mean a lot! But every time, Rena worked through our list in a timely way and responded to every single one of our questions with answers that were direct, and helpful. She was not just ready with answers to every question, but happy to provide additional suggestions and information from her experience, and proactive about raising and resolving issues in the plans we suggested we had not considered yet. B. Lin was one of our favorite vendors we worked with--and one of the most essential when it came to actually making the event we dreamed about a reality. From reviewing rental tablecloths and dishware, to suggesting tweaks to our floorplan and timeline, to setting everything out on the big day--and more. They also were crucial to the final clean up, and helping us ensure we got our venue security deposit back! The venue manager actually told us the place " was left in exceptional condition." OH and did I mention we were able to plan with them so effectively we flipped the room ahead of schedule? All night the B. Lin team was like clockwork. (but clockwork that knew how to adjust to the other ups and downs of the day around them!) And that's just about how helpful, detailed, and responsive they were to work with. I know what you're thinking--BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FOOD? The food was delicious. I can't really do it justice so you will just have to try it yourself. My only regret is we couldn't serve everything we sampled, because it was all so delicious! Star players include the buffalo chicken wonton, moneybag dumpling, and pork bao buns which were all HUGE hits during the cocktail hour. For dinner we landed on a stir-fry buffet, because it was not only delicious but gave us a lot of flexibility to for guests with dietary restrictions. I will admit now, my mother was initial skeptical of that we weren't going with the "steak or chicken" plate that was standard. But we knew we wanted something different, and tasty. In the end, she was completely converted by the end of the night. She may have told me how great the dinner was more than anyone else! But seriously, everyone loved the food, everyone! By the end of the night, me and my wife received a LOT of compliments--that really should be directed to B. Lin catering, Rena, and the rest of the team the helped us. So this is my attempt to pass along those many praises, as well as a few of my own. If you need great catering--looking no further!

From the start, he was very professional and communicated well. He sent me sample menus with options galore. If there was something on the menu that I wanted mixed up a little, he had no objections. My husband is a very 'simple' eater so I wanted to know if the Chef could also prepare something 'simple' like Potato Au Gratin. Whew....he did and it was sooooooo good! He arrived at our home in what I call his mobile kitchen (because he had everything in it that one could imagine), introduced himself to us and got down to business. We had a few small plate items, entree and dessert. He talked to us while he prepared the meals and it simply felt like he was a friend. It did not feel weird or awkward having him in our kitchen at all. It was great! He gave us tips on cooking at he prepared meals and spoke to us more about who he was (in and out of the kitchen). Some of the items we enjoyed were: 1. Pork chimichangas 2. Cajun eggrolls 3. Peking duck rolls 4. Filet (cooked to order) 5. Potato au gratin 6. Broccoli w/cheese 7. Cheese blintzes wi/ a strawberry wine sauce 8. Crab cakes Everything was perfect! He served us well and we could not have asked for a better experience.
