The big box jeweler had a guy come once a month to do it, and of course I just missed that date so I had to wait a whole month. The whole time I was afraid that something might happen to it while it being uninsured. After getting it appraised, I was shocked to see how much they charged me for the appraisal. They definitely didn't let me know that it was going to be that much when I talked to them on the phone. It was like a monthly ring payment. Now, this year I had bought a wedding/anniversary band for my wife. And I was faced with the same issue...where to get it appraised. I had to wait for the date this guy would show up and they charged an arm and a leg. For a $1000 ring they wanted $150 to do the appraisal. So I decided to look elsewhere. I stumbled upon Midwest Gem Lab, Inc on Yelp. I went to their website, and their business looked very professional. What I liked best about them was that they offered their rates up front (no hidden costs). And their rates were half that of what I would have paid anywhere else...either from where I went to last time, or anywhere that I researched. So I decided to give them a call. They answered the phone promptly and were very polite and very helpful answering my questions. I asked them if I could make an appointment to drop the ring off. I started to look at my calendar for dates that were two weeks out. But she told me that I could stop by today and it would only take an hour! Wow, that is great. I wasn't expecting that. I decided to stop in the following day. Their building was very easy to get to. It's right on Bluemound and Calhoun. As I entered, I was politely greeted and taken back to her office. I gave her my ring and then left to run an errand. I came back and she was already waiting for me with my ring and the appraisal. She explained the appraisal and informed me what she did to come up with that value. Fantastic...last guy never explained anything. It was the easiest process ever to get my ring appraised, and she was the nicest person to work with. And you can't beat their rates! I will definitely be back in the future. I definitely recommend Midwest Gem Lab Inc. Very professional and knowledgeably, great rates and great service.

Then I found Linda at Midwest Gem Lab/ The Jewelry Center. She made me a custom ring for considerably less than the big box stores and the diamonds are just the quality I hoped for. It's right on 9th near The National - FYI, 9th is a one way street so you may have to go up 10th for a block and loop back around. The name on the door is "BC Modern Furniture" and they're open Fri-Sun from 10-4. In addition, they run estate sales and host one day flea markets so check their website for upcoming events and sales. If you visit the store, know that it's mostly mid-century furniture with some same era collectables thrown in. It's not a huge place but it's very, very well curated. This is some of the nicest looking vintage furniture I've seen in town - lots of sideboards, dressers, end tables and some truly glorious sofas. Prices are commensurate with the quality - a big 2 piece sectional sofa with immaculate original upholstery was in the $600 range. That said, they're willing to negotiate so if you see something you love, have the conversation. The Mister grabbed a fun Maifest stein and a vintage German decor mag from 1964 for $10, so we left happy. They are adding things all the time so if you're trying to up the hipster cachet on your sweet Bay View bungalow definitely check them out.

He drove down from Milwaukee to Racine just to sit with us, talk and give us a lot of helpful info. We didn't really have any items that he deals in but he still sat with us and was very helpful. We offered to compensate him for his drive with gas prices so high and he absolutely refused. I would recommend contacting him if you are interested in the services he offers!
