Heritage is a neighborhood staple in cathedral heights. I have been dining in the area since I moved nearby for four years and finally decided to try this establishment. Indian food is not my favorite cuisine but it is mostly gluten-free which so I do keep it on my rotation. This location is never full so I was not sure about it. To be safe I ordered the butter chicken. It was good, but nothing special stood out. I did eat it all and the portion seemed adequate. They seemed a little understaffed even for not having many customers. The ambiance was fine but again nothing special stood out. There are way better Indian restaurants in DC starting with Rasika. Heritage is not bad, but there is nothing that popped for me. If you are in the area and the other restaurants are packed, you can give this a try, but if you are looking for something special, I suggest to keep looking. read more

If you're looking for spicy and flavorful this is not the place to come. It is very plain tasting. It's not bad though per se . if you don't like spices perhaps this is the place for you. The garlic cilantro naan was a little too doughy and floury for me. The paneer makhani tasted a lot like tomato. Obviously there's tomato in it but it tasted like pasta sauce a little. There was not enough spices to taste much except tomato. the matar paneer was also ok. I probably would not come here again because I'm looking for more flavor but I can see why other people would really enjoy this place. They seem nice as well read more

I was recently in Cathedral Heights with a friend and we stopped by for Heritage India's $25 all-you-can-eat weekend brunch. Although the service was initially a bit on the slow side, the food was delicious. Every dish is served family-style and make sure to order only as much as you can eat, as Heritage India charges $5 for excessive food waste and you cannot take leftovers to-go. My friend and I got the chicken tikka, onion bhajji, samosa chaat, lamb rogan josh, murgh makhani, dal makhani, masala dal, and raita, all served with naan and rice. I especially liked the onion bhajji, samosa chaat, the lamb rogan josh, and the murgh makhani. However, the chicken tikka was dry and rubbery and the naan a bit too crispy. Heritage India also offers bottomless mimosas for an extra $18 for the weekend brunch. I would definitely recommend Heritage India if you're looking for an affordable, filling, tasty weekend brunch! read more

My friend and I stopped by Heritage India while we were in Cathedral Heights and had a good experience in some ways! The highlight of the night was the outstanding bread pudding. WOW! How did they pack so much flavor into that? I absolutely loved it. Maybe my favorite dessert in DC? The rest of the experience left us wanting. The chicken Tikka and sag paneer were both fine but imbalanced flavor-wise. The samosa appetizer was too small for the price and not quite crispy or savory enough. And the rice was NOT basmati or jasmine rice; rather, it tasted like cheap minute rice. That was a letdown. Service was very prompt! Delicious Indian food -- well-seasoned, well-portioned, although pricier than I'd like. I've done take out from here multiple times and have dined in once, and the service has been great -- servers are kind and check in often, and when I pick up carry out there haven't been any issues! After church on Sunday I stopped in to Heritage India for their bottomless lunch menu and bottomless mimosas. The price was right and the quality excellent. We were greeted immediately and shown to a table where the menu/process was explained. Basically you can order 5 items off the menu and eat them family style for the maximum flavor palette. Then repeat with the same or try more items next. Basically they keep feeding you until you say stop! The bottomless mimosa (or Bloody Mary) was $16, a great value for DC and very tasty. I recommend the Sunday brunch here as delicious and economical. You will be satisfied! read more

Updated review: I am EXTREMELY disappointed to be changing my review from 5 stars to 1 star. The last time I came here I had a wonderful time so I told my two good friends about the great brunch. We were super excited about it and I drove them from Arlington just to show them the amazing brunch place I have been telling them about. We walked in at 1:30pm after a family who got seated right away and started ordering. The Indian lady then said she had no more tables for 3 and we could wait 30 min, or we could squeeze in on a table of 2. We decided to do the table of 2 since we were super hungry. So after finally sitting, it's about 1:40pm. We wait another 10 minutes and finally the old Indian lady comes and tells us rudely "no more brunch today, you need to come before 1:30 to do brunch. You can order off the regular menu instead." There should have been enough time until brunch ended at 2:30, so we didn't mind ordering a bunch of things early on, but she didn't give us that option. We stared at her dumbfounded that she didn't bother to mention that earlier before we even sat down. I've never been treated so rudely, it was like we were a BURDEN to her when in fact we drove quite far just to give her business!!! She basically just kicked us out. I was SO embarrassed to have brought my friends here, and have them treated like that after I recommended this place. Never ever coming back to this disgusting place ever again. I will actively tell people to avoid this place. We had an AMAZING AMAZING time at 2Amys instead, so go there if you are reading this review. This restaurant can close down for all I care. Yummy, I really enjoyed dinner here. The atmosphere is nice too, there were quite a few people dining and it was pretty lively and light. Felt nice. Samosas were great, served wit tamarind chutney & a yogurt sauce. I really liked it, however I'm not sure the chutney is homemade and I think it would have been amazing if they made their own. Bhartha (smoked eggplant) entree was outstanding. I would order it again. Curry shrimp was excellent as well. Everything had great flavor with some heat but not too much. The naan was awesome too. Tried the potato naan & the walnut/date. Both were so good & just fun to try something a little different. Mango lassi was good but again I'm not sure if homemade, still good tho. There are two rules I always abide by when checking out a new restaurant: (1) Check on Yelp to make sure it has a good rating, (2) It can't be Indian. With Heritage India, I broke both rules and decided to come in on a whim. Overall, I wasn't disappointed, but I also wasn't impressed. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted and seated. My server quickly came by to take my order. I settled on the salmon dish. My food initially came out fairly quickly. However, it was under-cooked, with the inside of the salmon being completely raw. After this initial incident, my fish came back fully cooked. Despite the salmon now being somewhat overcooked, I did thoroughly enjoy the Indian spices and seasoning used on the fish. Moreover, they were happy to supply extra rice at no charge. Despite the initial issues I had, the food and service here on the whole is decent. read more

It constitutes a bit of my heritage at this point. It's a bit disappointing that they've moved away from the Glover Park stretch that I used to come for (though I don't really blame them given the bad situation for businesses in that area), but their new location near the Cathedral is worth an update. The menu continues to be expansive, and while pretty much every Indian place has a decent vegetarian selection, they do separate out their vegan items as well. I don't recall that I'd been for lunch before, but the lunch menu yielded an impressive platter, with the chickpeas I ordered accompanied by lentils and spinach. I probably would have gotten by with rice, but a perfectly pillowy naan arrived shortly thereafter. They've made the odd choice to not offer the standard Indian appetizer (the samosa), but the onion bhajji that I got instead wasn't bad; mostly it was a pretty delicious chickpea-based batter. It's always been the case that their food is nuanced in flavor without being hot for the most part, garnished with things like julienned ginger. The new location ("new" being 2.5 years old apparently; I've been gone a while) offers a few outdoor seats. Unfortunately, being at an intersection there is a lot of car noise, but I took the seat voluntarily and is was a beautiful day. Yelp apparently doesn't like Heritage as much as I do, but I struggle to think of a downside; I passed up a free catered lunch to eat there on my most recent trip. read more

Worst food I have ever had, sadly. After a tiring day of sight seeing, we definitely wanted to try some comfort food in our hotel room. We ordered chicken vindaloo, goan fish, and lachacha paratha! Unfortunately, all three had issues. Fish had no taste at all. There was nothing goan about it. I felt like I had Covid or something since it was tasteless. Next, chicken vindaloo was only spicy, with no taste with big giant pieces of low quality chicken and potatoes. Originally, this recipe never had potatoes, but most Indian restaurants add potatoes to make it cost-effective. It was the worst chicken curry I have ever had. Lachacha paratha was a joke. It was a fried lump of thick dough. My whole appetite died and made me take time out to write this review. People, please try other restaurants around, this one needs a lot of quality checks and training their chefs. read more

This is a great neighborhood spot to bring friends, family, or a special someone. I arrived on a Wednesday evening and there were a few tables already seated at 7:00pm. There were plenty of available tables, but more filled in as we ate. The service was quick and friendly and the food had great flavor. I really wanted to like this place, unfortunately it was overpriced and underwhelming in terms of the overall experience. There are far better options for great Indian food in DC. The decor is decent enough (a few nice Indian inspired paintings and woodwork) but not nearly on par for fine dining in the dc area. The plates the food is served on is well worn and aging. Service was relatively prompt but neither friendly, nor attentive. My order taker (owner/manager?) neither cracked a smile nor a pleasant hello when I walked in. In fact at 1:30 pm he looked like he was ready for his day to end. I ordered an appetizer (bhel puri) and a combo platter (vegetable vindaloo). It was clear my bhel was basically a store bought mix (bikaner brand) and was hastily prepared. It was over sour due to the extremely sour tamarind sauce put on top and was generally tasteless otherwise. A good bhel puri should be sweet and spicy with a hint of tang and bursting with color - mine was anything but. The main course vindaloo was equally disappointing. Vindaloos are typically spicy but flavorful, this one tasted as if someone had just dumped a bunch of uncooked chili powder to earn a badge if spicyness. In addition, it contained non traditional vegetables like mushroom which didn't work in the dish. In addition the naan served was dry and unbuttered. The one redeeming quality was that the spinach corn and daal makhni served were reasonably good. In conclusion this was one of the lower quality restaurants I've visited in a while when you consider the most important elements in a restaurant - food, service, and ambience. If you're looking for good Indian food or a even a generally adequate dining restaurant, pass on this place. read more

Today a friend surprised me and took here for lunch. As I walked in I noticed the Fabulous vintage pictures of Indian Life of Royals on all the walls set the tone of Genuine Indian Food The flavor inside was so varied and the host and hostess have been there for years. "the lunch menu" was so easy to select from with delicious options like Tandoori chicken Seekh Kabab The vegetables in curry was the best mopped up with garlic Naan bread. We had a jumbo shrimp so moist and well grilled. The sauces we spooned in our mouths in a mini race to get our share. read more

I ordered food from them and found a silver colored foreign object in the rotis (see photos). When I called them up to report it they told me to "Throw away that roti and eat the rest". When I told them that it was important for me to make sure that the rest of the food was safe to eat they told me to "Go to the hospital and get checked out". We had an excellent dinner here with our son and his family and a couple of their friends. Among the appetizers, I found the golgoppas and the spinach fritters unusual beyond the usual Indian restaurant appetizers, although for the former, two of the four served was enough, glad to share with other. Among the main courses, I had the Hyderabadi Murgh Haleem, a flavorful ground chicken dish, and enjoyed every bit, bu t was glad to share the lamb vindaloo (well flavored though the meat was a tad tough) and a lamb dish, I think the Pasanda, that had a pleasant clove-y flavor. Papadum chips came before the meal with an agreeably spicy red sauce. Tuesday night the wine bottles were half-price (our table enjoyed the Washington cab, called StoneCap), but what pleased me was the $18 pitcher of tamarind-ginger mojito. My fiancé ordered the white meat chicken tikka masala which he said was very good. The food is good but very expensive, our bill was $50. Most expensive Indian food I've ever had. There are lots of solid options for Indian food in DC, but Heritage India is cut above most. There is a greater depth to the flavor of their dishes, some of which - like the lamb curry house special - are very luxurious. Also a place where you simply must get dessert. read more

This place is an upscale Indian restaurant located on Wisconsin Ave. near Cathedral Heights and is one of my favorite places in the neighborhood. The atmosphere is quiet and lovely and the food is always amazing. The wait staff and the owners are especially attentive and you can tell they genuinely care about their customers having a good experiences. Update: during the pandemic this place has definitely become a staple. Not only is their food great, but their staff and drivers are always professional and helpful. The food was lukewarm, the roti dry, and the samosas were greasy--a huge disappointment. I called the owner, and she insisted the food was made fresh. What an amazing experience! My wife, friends of ours, and I were in need of ddinner before a concert on Saturday. Of the several restaurants we entered, only HerItage India even considered feeding us. We were given what was tantamount to a semi-private dining room because they had no tables for four. The food was excellent! A true balance of flavors and textures, combinIng heat and coolness in ways that delighted the palate and also nourished the soul. Throughout our stay, they kept coming by to see that we had all we needed and were enjoying the food. This was especially important to me, as one of our diners had an allergy to a food generously present in Indian cuisine. They worked around the limitation without a fuss.
