I take offense to the term "slop bowl" but you could describe this place as Indian slop bowls where you pick a base, meat, and extras. However, that's a front for what I think is some of the best south Asian food I've ordered in DC. Check out the dosas here! It's sooooo good, and the dosa crepes are cooked to order with whatever you order to be the filling. We did chicken and cheese, and it was amazing. They gave us sauces, but it was totally unnecessary, the food is so good by itself. I don't think I've ordered the other stuff here. While fulfilling my civic obligation of jury duty I wanted to find something flavorful that was walkable from the courthouse and Spice 6 is a convenient two blocks away. I didn't have a lot of time so it was convenient that this place is counter service. To even make things easier, they use an iPad ordering system, so you can explore the menu and take your time to explore. The first thing I saw when I walked in was an ad for their BahuBali Burger. It looked tasty so my decision was made for me. And good thing I went with it because it was out of this world flavorful. I think that I was expecting something the size of a typical burger, but it's three or four times that. I had gotten a chickpea side dish and between the two had no chance of finishing my meal. Excellent North & South Indian Food! So sad the location near Mosaic district closed in Vienna, and glad the DC location is still here conveniently right by my office! Here's the scoop on all of the dishes: - Naan pizza: The paneer with onion, peppers on a bed of fluffy, scrumptious Garlic Naan and topped with the Korma sauce is divine! So tasty that i couldn't stop until I ate all of the slices! - Biryani: Skip the brown and white rice. I'm not a big rice fan, but really enjoyed the bold flavor of the spices in the biryani. - Rice bowl: Great carry-out option that's the least messiest to eat. Get the biryani with paneer and tofu! - Naan wrap: Tasty but really messy to eat as the sauce drips out of it. I recommend not getting it with a sauce or better yet...get the pizza! - Kebab Entree: Great option if you can't decide what, it's a nice sampler! The paneer kebab is really tasty with larger chunks and different marinade sauce than the panner served at the front. I would skip the paneer/veggie combo and just get the paneer. Although the container is sealed tight, I don't think it's the best take-out option and would sit down and eat it. - Sauces: The Korma sauce is my favorite! The palak sauce is good, the tikki sauce is bit spicy, I wasn't a fan of the korma sauce. - Paneer: Cooked well and marinated in a nice savory sauce - Palak Paneer Entree: Made fresh from the back and much thicker than the Palak sauce served at the front - Tofu: Surprisingly very good and spicy! I LOVE paneer, but so impressed with the tofu that I sometimes get it. - Veggies: Spicy! - Choola: Chickpeas cooked well with good sauce. Recommend the choola over the veggies. - Mixed chat: Nice appetizer, filling enough to be a light lunch with mini samosa and small aloo potato tikki/patty. - Paper Masala Dosa: Generous size, perfectly crispy, and my favorite of the dosas! - Rava Onion Dosa: Very good, Rava dosa is tough to make right, it's a testament on how good a restaurant can make its dosas. The sambar is quite tasty as well with a nice spicy kick. - Rava Paneer Dosa: Not fan a fan as the paneer is shredded and could barely taste it. I prefer the Rava Onion dosa over the Paneer one. - Onion Uttapam: The only dish I wasn't a fan of, too doughy and undercooked, I wish it was thinner and crispier. That's probably the only item on the menu that I wouldn't get again. The Veggie Uttampam at the table next to me looked very good though. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Even though lunch time is quite busy, they are polite and take your order with a smile. Great places for groups with plenty of seating. A crowd-pleaser with so many choices. Came here yesterday for a little pre movie meal and was very impressed! The menu is huge and I was definitely having some analysis paralysis, but then I saw the sign for the non-tacos and decided that's definitely the direction that I wanted to go in. My only complaint about them is that you have to choose either paneer or chicken, you can't do one of each. I opted for the paneer and was very impressed. It also comes with rice and stewed chickpeas, so it was a lot of food for the price. It was also super flavorful and filling. Service was quick. You can order from the touchscreen or at the counter kind of a chipotle style if you're gonna go for a bowl but the tacos you only had to make one choice so I just ordered at the counter. This the second time I've tried the food here. The rava dosa was really good. The potato filling and sambar was very flavorful. The vadas were a good size, crispy, and not overly oily. What a surprise! We were walking through Chinatown after an event nearby and happened to stumble across this Indian spot. The set up is more like a Chipotle rather than a formal sit down restaurant. There are 2 touch screen computers where you can order from, though they don't work very well. I ended up placing my entire order to only not be able to process my credit card (which was working perfectly fine). I went to the 2nd computer and re-did the order and after scanning, tapping, and attempting with 2 different cards, it eventually went through! The food honestly came out faster than the amount of time I tried paying for it! We ordered a kids veggie bowl that is completely customizable. I also ordered the Masala Dosa which was even better than the veggie bowl. The Dosa was light and crispy with spiced potatoes and vegetables inside. It also came with 2 sauces and dal on the side. The food is good. However the customer service sucked today. No one greeted us as we stood at the register, ready to order. After some time passed, we were told to use the kiosk. Late on this review but the food wasn't bad when I ate here. This was very fast similar to chipotle/cava for the way they prepare the food. The naan was still fresh given the express food service. Let's start off with the good. Amazing Food! Huge variety, fresh ingredients, super clean. Variety includes all the dishes you would expect. Chicken Tikka Masala, Saag, Lentils, Dosa, Naan, and the list goes on. These are then combined in normal dishes, bowls, naan tacos, pizza, and whole bunch of other options. Plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options as well. The ingredients are fresh and prepared to order. Food comes out piping hot. The restaurant was clean and we saw them cleaning while we dined in. Service was incredible. They were very patient in helping us understand the menu. When the kitchen made a mistake when on the spice levels, they quickly corrected. Wow! Came to Spice 6 after a lackluster experience at Rasika and I was absolutely blown away. From the beginning the service was super friendly (she encouraged us to sample the different chicken flavors to see which we wanted) and she was very generous with the portions. We ordered the Rice chicken bowl (a make-your-own type bowl where we got to customize our curry, chutney, protein, and vegetables) and found everything to be super fresh and tasty. We also got the Shahi paneer dish, which came with a very generous portion of naan and rice. As expected, that was delicious as well. The physical interior of Spice 6 isn't exactly anything to write home about, but that was far outweighed by the great service and quality of the food. This may be the best Indian place in D.C. as well as the most reasonably priced. Will definitely be coming back next time I'm in town. read more

Well, it's been a while since my first review, but my thoughts are still the same. The food here is amazing and really hits the spot. I ordered a rice bowl, like back in the day. The chicken was so good and tender; I got the spinach masala, which was very good, and thoroughly enjoyed having the option to pick whichever veggies/toppings added. I got the plain naan and the servers were nice enough to give me a little extra tikka masala (sauce) in a cup that was perfect to use for dipping. They have ample seating and the service is very much Chipotle/RASA-esque in the sense that you choose a base and then you can choose your toppings. I enjoy Spice 6 however must make known that the masala dosa is the only entrée I've gotten here. I'm crazy for it. This obsession was apparent long before Spice 6 came into being. For the uninitiated, a dosa is just a big crepe. And, of course, anything can be put into a crepe. In the case of masala dosa, the filling is potatoes. Dosas are a staple food of South India. The dosa begins its life in a blender, generally made of rice, lentils and fenugreek seeds, combined with water. This mixture makes a thin batter that's left to ferment for a bit. The fermentation adds a lightly sour flavor to the dosa, similar to sourdough. The batter is then spread out on a hot pan and cooked--exactly like a crepe. Spice 6 has the dosa thing down to a science. Their dosas are large and crispy. If you get any of their dosas to-go, they'll wrap it carefully for transport. This is something I very much appreciate. Spice 6 also has a large, easy-to-read menu prominently displayed above the cashier. Do you know how helpful this is? I've been to lots of spots where the menu is written in secret code, or is tiny, or is non-existent altogether. AND there's a smaller, hand carry menu devoted just to their dosas. It's available at the counter, printed on a quality card stock, called (what else) "Dosa Menu". The staff is gracious and laser-focused on customers. There is a lot to like about Spice 6. On the weird side, there is never anyone in there when I go. I'm not sure why, as the food it pretty good. I've gotten the wrap every time I've been. It takes a few minutes because they cook the naan fresh while you wait, and when it's ready you just load it up with goodies, Chipotle-style. I like getting the biryani rice because it's slightly more exiting than regular rice, and chickpeas because who doesn't love chickpeas? For a protein, the chicken and the paneer are both great, and I like the tikka masala sauce - so tasty! You can add veggies like lettuce and tomato, and a variety of chutneys. The result is a gigantic wrap of tasty naan and lots of great fillings. It is super messy but pretty damn good. But did I say messy? It's really, really messy. read more
