    BahuBali Burger
    Tom P.

While fulfilling my civic obligation of jury duty I wanted to find something flavorful that was walkable from the courthouse and Spice 6 is a convenient two blocks away. I didn't have a lot of time so it was convenient that this place is counter service. To even make things easier, they use an iPad ordering system, so you can explore the menu and take your time to explore. The first thing I saw when I walked in was an ad for their BahuBali Burger. It looked tasty so my decision was made for me. And good thing I went with it because it was out of this world flavorful. I think that I was expecting something the size of a typical burger, but it's three or four times that. I had gotten a chickpea side dish and between the two had no chance of finishing my meal. The BahuBali Burger was the highlight and was flavorful, full of spice, and delicious.

Paneer Naan Pizza with Korma sauce and mango lassi!

Excellent North & South Indian Food! So sad the location near Mosaic district closed in Vienna, and glad the DC location is still here conveniently right by my office! Here's the scoop on all of the dishes: - Naan pizza: The paneer with onion, peppers on a bed of fluffy, scrumptious Garlic Naan and topped with the Korma sauce is divine! So tasty that i couldn't stop until I ate all of the slices! - Biryani: Skip the brown and white rice. I'm not a big rice fan, but really enjoyed the bold flavor of the spices in the biryani. - Rice bowl: Great carry-out option that's the least messiest to eat. Get the biryani with paneer and tofu! - Naan wrap: Tasty but really messy to eat as the sauce drips out of it. I recommend not getting it with a sauce or better yet...get the pizza! - Kebab Entree: Great option if you can't decide what, it's a nice sampler! The paneer kebab is really tasty with larger chunks and different marinade sauce than the panner served at the front. I would skip the paneer/veggie combo and just get the paneer. Although the container is sealed tight, I don't think it's the best take-out option and would sit down and eat it. - Sauces: The Korma sauce is my favorite! The palak sauce is good, the tikki sauce is bit spicy, I wasn't a fan of the korma sauce. - Paneer: Cooked well and marinated in a nice savory sauce - Palak Paneer Entree: Made fresh from the back and much thicker than the Palak sauce served at the front - Tofu: Surprisingly very good and spicy! I LOVE paneer, but so impressed with the tofu that I sometimes get it. - Veggies: Spicy! - Choola: Chickpeas cooked well with good sauce. Recommend the choola over the veggies. - Mixed chat: Nice appetizer, filling enough to be a light lunch with mini samosa and small aloo potato tikki/patty. - Paper Masala Dosa: Generous size, perfectly crispy, and my favorite of the dosas! - Rava Onion Dosa: Very good, Rava dosa is tough to make right, it's a testament on how good a restaurant can make its dosas. The sambar is quite tasty as well with a nice spicy kick. - Rava Paneer Dosa: Not fan a fan as the paneer is shredded and could barely taste it. I prefer the Rava Onion dosa over the Paneer one. - Onion Uttapam: The only dish I wasn't a fan of, too doughy and undercooked, I wish it was thinner and crispier. That's probably the only item on the menu that I wouldn't get again. The Veggie Uttampam at the table next to me looked very good though. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Even though lunch time is quite busy, they are polite and take your order with a smile. Great places for groups with plenty of seating. A crowd-pleaser with so many choices. Always excited to come back and have a new culinary experience.

    Paneer Naan Tacos

Came here yesterday for a little pre movie meal and was very impressed! The menu is huge and I was definitely having some analysis paralysis, but then I saw the sign for the non-tacos and decided that's definitely the direction that I wanted to go in. My only complaint about them is that you have to choose either paneer or chicken, you can't do one of each. I opted for the paneer and was very impressed. It also comes with rice and stewed chickpeas, so it was a lot of food for the price. It was also super flavorful and filling. Service was quick. You can order from the touchscreen or at the counter kind of a chipotle style if you're gonna go for a bowl but the tacos you only had to make one choice so I just ordered at the counter. It came out hot and fresh within about five minutes of me ordering.

We went to Chinatown for Chinese food but found this place instead. Man, are we glad we did. First, it is super easy to order. You can order with staff or at a kiosk. There are sooo many amazing options. We over-ordered but weren't mad about it. We ended up having leftovers for dinner. The burger was unlike any we have ever had. Massive too, but so delicious. Definitely the most tender chicken we've ever had at an Indian food establishment. I can't remember the name of the paneer dish but it was very customizable and absolutely delicious. Everything was just sooo good. Texturally perfect. Flavorful. Spicy but not over the top. The ladies behind the counter were super nice too.

Yikes! Very disappointed in the food. Large portions, but flavor was lacking and off-putting. The only items I liked was the Sambar and the Marsala Samosa Burger. However, both were not worth a repeat. The Uttappam was not tasty at all. One bite and it was then trashed. The bhindi masala was flavorful but difficult to eat because the okra was tough and stringy. The garlic naan was uneventful and the spinach was okay but too much paneer that were way too large.

This the second time I've tried the food here. The rava dosa was really good. The potato filling and sambar was very flavorful. The vadas were a good size, crispy, and not overly oily. They could have used a little bit more salt and seasoning. We also had the gulab jaman and you could taste the oil in them.

I had the butter chicken with the medium spicy sauce and garlic naan and it was so good. Friendly and helpful staff. I'm surprised the place was empty.

Late on this review but the food wasn't bad when I ate here. This was very fast similar to chipotle/cava for the way they prepare the food. The naan was still fresh given the express food service. The inside of the Resturant was very loud with advertisements and graphic design with few tables available to dine in. Not a bad option for grab and go if your time is limited.

The hubs really liked the naan pizza option. I, on the other hand, like the more simplistic things like a paneer dosa. Naan pizza: The main protein was lamb with a tikka masala curry as the base with vik's red chutney along with extra garlic. I must say it's an interesting creation. Your taste buds will be hit with lots of flavors and wonderment about what you just created at an Indian restaurant. Paneer dosa: I was hoping there was a ton of paneer, but there was only a sprinkle of shredded ones in the middle of the wrapped dosa. It wasn't finely melted or prepared in any special way; I should have just stuck with the plain dosa then. It was accompanied with sambar and chutney that provided additional flavors.

Stopped in after seeing a sign for the naan tacos. Ordered paneer tacos which came with two sides--rice and chickpeas. Really enjoyed the tacos and the sides were pretty good! Overall a tasty and quick meal

We devoured the food. Only the receipt was left!

Spice 6: where even the novice in Indian cuisine can embark on a spicy adventure! My lamb and chickpea salad danced a flavorful tango on my taste buds, not too spicy to send me into a water-drinking frenzy. Now, the Date's chicken extravaganza - a symphony of spice! He devoured it with such gusto that I thought he might start breathing fire. Leaving with satisfied taste buds and plans for a spicy encore - Spice 6, you'll see us again! Our food was so yummy that the only photo is of the receipt!

Custom bowl with rice, chicken, kadai masala, sweet tamarind and spicy green chutneys.
    Joshua K.

A fantastic restaurant! I ordered a custom bowl with rice, chicken, kadai masala, sweet tamarind and spicy green chutneys for delivery. It arrived on-time, albeit with no utensils. My bowl was excellent, with well-cooked, seasoned, and plentiful chicken, amazing heat and flavor, perfectly cooked vegetables, and not too much salt. I look forward to returning and trying their other offerings!

Was pleased to see that the restaurant is still around (and super busy). No reservations, but we were lucky enough that there were enough seats at the bar, otherwise I don't think we would've been able to eat here at all. So hard to choose from a menu where everything sounded so good. We got the palak chaat, bhindi ka lonj, gobhi mattar, mint paratha, vegetable pulao, gujarati lasagne, and chili and olive oil naan. Standouts were the palak chaat and mint paratha. The palak chaat was the most well-balanced dish that satisfied every part of the flavor wheel: crispy spinach fritters, some tang from the yogurt and tamarind, sweetness from the date, and a lovely savoriness. The mint paratha was wonderfully flaky and herbaceous. The other dishes were good, but not particularly exciting. For desserts, we had the mango rasmalai and gulab jamun. Generally love ordering gulab jamun whenever I can, and it really hit the spot. The cardamom ice cream was the perfect pairing for it. I can kind of see where they were going with the mango rasmalai and the different textures/presenations of mango, but personally did not find it to be that memorable. Overall, not as mind-blowing as I remember but still enjoyed the meal. Definitely recommend making reservations if you want a table.

Drinks: we were there for the happy hour so we both wanted to try something special. I ordered the Chai espresso martini and my boyfriend ordered the Pili margarita. The Chai espresso martini was GOLDEN! If this drink were to go up for cocktail of the year, it would come out on top. Might I say that chai is something that you can mess up and I've had encounters where it was watered down, not the case here. I tasted the fresh and real chai and the richly brewed espresso. This drink wasn't just a martini, it warranted deep conversation with each sip. My boyfriend raved about his Pili margarita and talked about how excellent it was to taste fresh mangoes, a burst of citrus, and spiciness. A beautiful culinary combination Safe to say that both drinks were our favs!!! I also had a glass of their white wine and it was dry and refreshing. Well done! Food: we ordered several dishes from the happy hour menu. Please note that they aren't shy of providing excellent portions. Manchurian wings: a star dish! The fry on the wings were perfect but the seasoning puts this dish over the top. Highly recommended! Vegetable samosa: flaky dough with the most delectable sautéed vegetables. You'd definitely want to try a few of these! Gobi manchurian: a beautiful dish for non-meat eaters and meat eaters. Similarly to the wings, these cauliflowers were perfectly fried and seasoned to perfection. Actually, at one point, I thought that I was eating a meat dish because it was so tender and juicy inside. Please don't miss ordering these! Spicy chicken tikka: the dish that makes you ask "what spices are in this? They're EXCELLENT!" Such a juicy and tender cut with the perfect blend of flavors. Order, order, order! I think it's safe to say that we enjoyed ALL of our selections and appreciated the modern twist on Indian food classics. They didn't stray too far from the beauty of these dishes but added just enough personality to win you over. Lastly, we ordered dessert! We originally went with their bread pudding which came with cardamom ice cream but the amazing host, Dave, surprised us with their special Gulab jamun. The cardamom ice cream was AHHH-MAY-ZIN (spelled how I need you to say it!) it was amazing! But let's get into this bread pudding. I have so many questions: who is the pastry chef? How did they master such perfect bread pudding? Also, why is this dessert SO GOOD?! Best bread pudding and ice cream EVER! And I don't say that often about much bread puddings. The Gulab jamun was also my favorite because it wasn't sweet as the others and I felt so satisfied taking bites of this with the beautiful ice cream they placed on top. It's a no brainer that I'm coming back soon and that I'm going to try their dinner menu next. Please make the reservations and go support this spot, you won't regret it!

I also ordered the Chicken Makhani ($20) because I'm basic like that. It comes with rice. You can customize the spice levels, and yes, I ordered mild (...I SAID I was basic). The butter chicken was good but doesn't crack the list of my favorites. The chicken was a little dry and they use a grilled/barbecued chicken which gave it a smoky flavor. The mild was quite mild, I actually think I could handle a slightly spicier level here. I'm happy I tried this place - will come back to try more.

The place was busy on a Fri night, so highly recommend making reservations. Order included Bison Momo ($16), Blue Cheese Reshmi Kebab ($14), Spicy Nawabi Duck Kebab ($16) which indeed had a subtle enjoyable spice kick to it! Meen Pollichathu ($28) came with a very delicious Khichdi, and the Wild Mushroom Biryani ($24) continues to be a top dish at this place. Gulab Jamun ($10) was a very comforting dessert and a perfect way to end the night! Service was excellent, and food arrived within 15-mins of placing the order. Noise levels on the average end, including a rather loud table next to us where the dude was definitely buzzed. Will continue to be one of our favorite places whenever we are in DC!

The chicken tikka masala with naan for $10 was an absolute steal. My friend loved the scallops, and I grabbed a tea for $4 to go with everything. Altogether, I had an amazing meal for under $15, which almost never happens. They also have a heated patio that's really cute, making it a great option even on cooler nights. Service was a little slow with fewer check-ins than we would have liked, but the space is cozy and the overall vibe feels more laid back. I didn't even know this place existed before, but I'll definitely be back. Such a great, low key dinner spot to check out with friends. Super cute and cozy and romantic place!

For my detailed review below, typically above a 4.5 is in the two or three Michelin star category and 4.2-4.4 is a Michelin 1 star. For all my other adventures visit: https://www.instagram.com/food_for_chu?igsh=Zjk3ZDlrNTAxY2J0&utm_source=qr D.C. Michelin #1: For our first stop in our nation's capital, I am reviewing the Indian restaurant, Rania. This is actually my second time at the restaurant, however I only experienced the 3 course option that time and opted for the full tasting experience this time. Ambiance: 4.2/5.0 The restaurant is simple, yet elegant. The noise level is moderate and you don't have to worry about listening to someone else's conversation all night. I have yet to travel to India, but I imagine a fine-dining establishment there to look something like this with the goblets, arches, and see through walls! Service: 4.4/5.0 In my first trip to Rania, I actually had to bring my golf clubs which the host stored for me and even carried it out when I was leaving (it is extremely heavy). In my second trip, the service was again top notch. The waiter was attentive and enthusiastic making me excited for the full tasting experience. The pace of the meal was also perfect. Food: 4.3 Amuse: Two incredible small bites starting with a Sabudana Vada, a warm and spicy fritter that was soooo good. Next, a Chana masala that had that same incredible warmth but a tomato kick instead. First: The first dish of the tasting was a yellowfin tuna tartar and Pani Puri. The crunch of the pani puri complements the tuna so well and the yuzu vinaigrette was not overpowering. I will say, that there wasn't a wow factor for this dish however, but still tasted good. Second: Next up was a scallop dish with an Amritsari (cooking style that blends spices for a burst of flavor) sauce. The scallop was cooked perfectly and sauce is no joke. At first the flavor is subtle as you really taste the scallop, but then the kick comes in and it is delicious! Third: The next course was a Nargisi Kofta quail egg, Swiss chard, truffle cream, and pickled mushrooms. Think of a scotch egg with chicken as the outer covering. This dish was surprisingly spicy (you see a theme here), but the creamy sauce complimented the crispy chicken so well. If it's too spicy, make sure to eat the chard to give yourself a break. This was fantastic, but be warned, it's deceptively spicy! Fourth: I then had a Shrimp momo which is a shrimp dumpling. The dumpling sits in a moilee sauce which is coconut based. First off, I will admit that shrimp dumplings are not my favorite, but it was perfectly cooked in this dish. The sauce has a great savory and nutty flavor. However, there was a bit of an aftertaste that I couldn't wrap my head around. Fifth: For my fifth dish I got to eat a Lamb Seekh kabob. The lamb is incredibly tender and the Kashumber (cucumber in yogurt) is a perfect compliment. I will say that the flavors weren't as strong, perhaps because the previous dishes were so powerful. Sixth: The last savory dish was my selection of the duck vindaloo (chose over the squab tandoori). Vindaloo is a spicy curry and think of the duck like a duck confit. The skin is so crispy and the meat is extremely tender. The duck also comes with naan, rice, and lentils. This feels like a traditional Indian meal but elevated to the max. So much flavor, perfect cook, and the best accompaniments, my favorite part of the meal. Dessert: To wrap everything up, dessert was a chocolate tart with masala chai ice cream. The chai flavor balanced out the dark chocolate fudge to perfection. As someone who doesn't really like chocolate, the chai itself made me want more. Overall: 4.3/5.0 Just like my first trip, the food was great, ambiance serene, and service superb. There were a couple of dishes that didn't wow but overall I can't complain at all. As someone who loves Indian food, this experience elevates while keeping true to its roots. Rania is absolutely deserving of its star, and I can't wait to return!

The low light really brings a intimate and exclusive mood to your experience here. Service: Before being sat, being greeted and being sat was slow, there was only us and another group and the venue was not packed or busy. We waited quite a while to be greeted at our table as well aftwr being seated. However, during the experience, service was exceptional. From serve staff taking explaining the dishes to us to the staff wiping up our table between courses. Their attention to detail and promptness was lovely. At one point I had to leave the table for a long period of time so I missed the 5th course. They took it away because it was cold and brought me a fresh hot dish. They were extremely kind and thoughtful of my 9 year old. Misc notes before food review: This is not a kid friendly venue, especially if you have a picky eater or a child that doesn't like to venture out or expand their palate. There are options that kids could like but very limited. They do get to choose a la carte from the regular 4 course meal menu. There is a parking garage across the road that closes at 10. Worst parking and customer service experience of my life. Please dont pay to park here if you can help it. There's if some free or pay to park street parking. They have a 4 course regular menu for $90pp and a 7 course chef tasting menu for $175pp. The chef tasting menu is said to be limited time but looking at the other reviews, it seems like the chef tasting is pretty much the same and one or two courses vary. We were able to do the 7 course experience for $125 due to a promotion going on. Everyone had to do the same experience. Portions are quite small and you may leave not fully satiated. But the experience is lovely. I would say it is a little over priced, but again we pay for the ambience, presentation and experience. Drinks: I really enjoyed the drinks I was able to try. They are an experience when you receive them. The presentation is so lovely. See pictures. I got to try the lychee bomb which was excellent, and my favorite of the drinks I tried. Love the flavor pairings, sweet with some savory hints. Hocus pocus was a bourbon lovers dream. Great pairing of the berry puree and bitters with bourbon. The this is not lassi was really nice with lassi flavors with blackberry hints. And thick as well. The blush and bashful was tart and really unique. I tried it without the foam. And lastly the spring awakening, this was my least favorite. The alcohol pairing with the kiwi cucumber flavors didnt really fit to me. All the drinks definitely could tell had alcohol. Food: We did the non-vegetarian tasting with 7 courses. They do have a vegetarian tasting as well. The presentation of all the food was pretty lovely and I quite enjoyed that aspect. The sabudana vada and chana masala panisse was lovely, super flavorful and I would say my #2 for the night. Perfect start. First course - The tuna tartar pani puri was really nice and unique. I would never have thought to pair tuna with pani puri but it really worked. My #4 for the night. Second course - Hokkaido scallop... it was perfect. The hollandaise was so flavorful but did not over power the jumbo scallops natural taste. And the scallop wasnt over cooked. This is a scallop lovers dream. My #1 for the night. Third course - quail egg kaftan, this was a dense kofta, which i appreciated. Fourth course - black cod. It initially appeared undercooked and thought it would have a fishy smell and taste. Pleasantly surprised with the delicate way it was prepared yet no fishy taste or smell. Fifth course - lamb seekh kabob - this was a hand held one, which I enjoyed. All the flavors in one bite really brought thr flavors out. However this was probably my least favorite of the dishes. Sixth - pork cheeks vindaloo was really nice. Very tender and moist and rhe sauce was quite nice. Pre dessert was exquisite. It was so refreshing, cleansing, cool, and tart. It made my mouth water for dessert. Dessert we had the chocolate tart which was nice but nothing special that I noted. The chocolate and the crunch went nicely together. However if I had to choose I would go with the kesari mango dessert. My 9 year old waa able to do a la cart from the 4 course meal choices. The beef short rib was amazing! So tender, so we'll cooked, so flavorful I throughly enjoyed it. My #3 for the night. Garlic naan was soft and not to burnt. And her dessert, the kesari mango was super delicious especially the sesame brittle. Id love to try this one again. I probably wouldn't come here again unless someone specifically requested to come here. But overall my experience was a nice one. It was nice to try this once.
